I think this single melody is what hooked me into listening Iron Maiden for good. This has to be the most underrated riff in entire Maiden discography. Never heard anyone talking about it. Even the song itself is mostly overlooked while talking about this album most of the time. The context makes it even better. Love the intro buildup to it and then later when it,s played again just after the solos.

Personal theory: It stems back to Nicko and his current limitations with certain songs, due to the 70% comeback post-stroke. CSIT is a classic gallop like The Trooper. Just like with The Trooper, Nicko is no longer doing the fills..... so you're not getting that solid chugging along bottom-end engine presence we once did. I think they dropped the rhythm part to flow with the newer adaptation to Nicko. Otherwise, the guitars would have outpaced the bottom-end, giving a somewhat auditory imbalance to us seasoned listeners [nerds] of this gem. I was at the Newark show, and I hadn't been to a show since Book of Souls 2017, due to health issues. I immediately heard the difference in that "engine", overall, and throughout the show.... But I understand and have empathy-- The show was GREAT, and I was grateful just to be there and still have Nicko with us, doing the best he can. But I think the other guys are making adjustments to the arrangements to "blend in" his shortcomings, so they're less obvious. Less gallop in the guitars, less our ears are looking for it in the drum pacing.
@Canuck10004 сағат бұрын
As much as much he was a beast back in the day, Nicko is unfortunately brining Iron Maiden down and that was prior to suffering a stroke. I remember listening to Aces High four or five years ago on a live YT video and it was unlistenable (way too slow). I don't want to crap on him, but I think it would be better if he retires and Maiden gets a younger drummer.

This video is a good example of why I think Iron Maiden has one of the best guitar-trios if not the best, where they can do things like this with their live performances. They can do stuff like most bands can only do in the studio, for example , Dave and Adrian can play their usual, famous, twin attack guitar harmonies, while Janick is playing a great rhythm guitar in the back-round along with Steve's bass-line. This elevates the harmonized guitars even more, this is not as easy with only two guitarists live for example. Or they can do these better alternative live versions of great classics, like this song in the video where they can harmonize even wider, I just love it. I think 3 guitarists is the way to go with music like this live. And who better than Dave, Adrian and Janick , what a perfect combination and I am so grateful that Harris, perhaps along with others chose to keep Janick and bring Adrian back, for us to get this amazing guitar trio =)

Playing it like the album is the easiest approach, so they didn't go through the trouble of redoing the arrangement, without a good reason. This is the same kind of harmony as what you find in The Trooper or Infinite Dreams, where the lower melody is a sixth below the higher one. This wider interval harmony sounds fuller and broader than a tight harmony in thirds especially in the higher register. That's why the harmony on Master of Puppets never sounds right live.

that would imply a different mix in guitars volume, because the higher harmony would always sound louder. another thing, they are always used the the lacking of a rhythm guitar in the harmonies leads, and an extra guitar live is just too much for the viewers attention. TBH i think live less is always more, because you pay more attention to the musicians than to the whole music... just an opinion though, from someone who's been playing live for 30 years :D

@@pedrolourenco2707 I mean, they've already done the thing with harmonies over a rhythm guitar with some of their songs. Revelations, Book of Souls, the Longest Day and The Legacy are some examples. He said it sounded like shit live and we were likely to never hear it again. He was likely referring to those melodies before the verses. @carbofos9979Ай бұрын
Looking back, I think they tried playing twin lead over one rhythm live in different songs, during first two-three tours since the reunion, but eventually decided that this is not that good for a live mix. On the album you can fine tune the balance, but live rhythm and twin leads are kind of confilcting for the priority in the definition, making the mix a bit muddy. (Especially when the lower harmony range is too close to the rythm part). Three-part harmony (assuming it is well-thought) maintains the definition while adding more fat to the sound. It is needed to say, the maiden's live rhythm tones with full stage volume are pretty different from their studio tones. Even Adrian's tone is much less focused and (as it heard from the isolated tracks) it is on the verge of a feedback at any given moment.

well i can think of several reasons they do it this way now. 1. general mixing arangement. all three guitars can be seperated and defined in the mix better 2. the bass would get buried by the old rhytum line with one guitar chugging along side it while the two leads go to town. in the studio recording the rythum line is mixed lower volume so the bass doesn't get bogged downand is allowed to breath more . back in the late 80's they had no thrid guitarist live so they jsut would axe that third guitar live ... playing it live now they are attempting to capture the song as it was done live back in 86-87 . this means cutting the third line so the bass pushes to the front like it did in 86. but they now actually ahve 3 guitarist . instead of having to turn down the third man , they instead have all three doing the harmony. 3. stave off boredom /new challenge/fun for every one. they simply mixed it up who's doing what just for the hell of it , why not ? eevery one get's to hear themsleves play and every one gets to shine .

@@DenverStarkey the video "maiden england" was filmed on the seventh tour of a seventh tour in 1988 the maiden england TOUR took place starting in 2012. so what are YOU talking about? the song infinte dreams, which as you point out is on the maiden england video from 1988 and is from the album that tour was in support of was for some reason left off of the maiden england tour.

They take this approach with most of the 2 part harmonies live with 3 guitarists. The Trooper for example rather than adding rhythm guitar they add in the main line but a lower octave.

Yes, unfortunately when they play the Trooper, the harmony part (Adrian's and Janick's) gets doubled instead of the lead. Makes it sound weird.
@Stuart_Cox1969Ай бұрын
That sounds like a Janick touch if you ask me, he's great at stuff like that, Dennis Stratton was the same.

This is what i refer to as reaching to the audience sonically. Lower notes resonate longer and further than higher notes. So when you have the difference on the fretboard much greater between three guitarist all in harmony but at different octaves , it has a more fuller sound. This will reach further into the audience than what is done in the studio. This is why people typically listen to music with more bassier tones enhanced versus more treble tones enhanced. It also provides more feeling of the sound waves on your skin , and body. This is the goal when playing this arrangement like this. Also , the louder you get , the more enhancement you feel. Its actually a technique that should be followed by more artist , in a big arena , those highs get lost in translation the further from the stage you are with all the other instruments going , a solo is one thing , but micced up drums , etc , will drown out those highs quickly. Rush has done this a lot on stage , between Alex and Geddy.

That is true about lower notes. Also the fact that this is now a sharmony in sixths instead of thirds like the original. That makes it sound fuller and gives it a broader sound - like what they do on The Trooper.

Great video! I love the original, but I prefer this new version to be played live, because it sounds really interesting and different to my ears!
