Great video - thanks. My 3a came with a crappy plastic tank installed but luckily the original was thrown in too. Going to try rescue it per your method and get it back in there. As for gear oil I’d love to join the few and the proud using yours….you just gotta start shipping to Canada. 😉 Best alternative I can find is vintage transmission lube from Penrite. Got to get it in all the way from Australia if you can believe it….Made primarily for British classics but says it won’t harm soft tranny internals. Not sure the viscosity will be ideal but if I can’t get yours I’ll give this a whirl….

Just pulled the engine trans/transfer case out of my son’s 55 CJ-5. It’s been sitting since the mid 80s. There was an inch of water floating on top of the oil in the transmission. Either from leaking or just decades of condensation. Gears have some rust. Not too bad. I am definitely using your awesome videos to help with the rebuild. I am very interested in getting oil and lubricants from you. Thank you for making my task a little less frightening.

Please send the info needed for purchase. I am reading to add lubricant to my rebuild of both trans and transfer case. Thanks for your instructions per your videos. Great job, very detailed, following your instructions and there is no way to mess up. I live in the central area of Alabama, not too hot and not too cold. Regards, Mike Ashley

I've been running regular sae 90 gear oil on my t90 since 1991 when I bought the jeep and so far I don´t have any problems to shift. In fact it shifts very smoothly. Never rebuilt it. The transfer case I did but the transmission never. It always worked fine.

great, the straight 90 probably had no extreme pressure additives in it so it is working good for you.

I always put marbles or other media in when doing tanks but only when there isn't a baffle in them. The jeep tanks have a baffle and it is very difficult to remove the marbles. On open tanks it works great just as you described.

take several feet of chain and tie a 1/4 to 3/8 rope to one end.. tie a loop in the other end of the rope to tie to the filler neck so the chain is easy to extract.. you can now with 2 people rock the tank back and forth.. the chain sliding around frees up the sediment so you can wash it out. speedometer cable core makes great fuel line cleaning snake.. just like plumbers use in your drains.. and with care.. you can actually spin it in a variable speed drill to power the cable in and out of fuel lines..

I think, as always, the secret of ending up with a good job is in the preparation, if you take short cuts here, the whole thing fails further on in use, taking the time to prepare like you have results in a long lasting repair. How does the fuel tank liner/sealer stand up to ethanol fuels ?
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 7 жыл бұрын
the sealer I use holds up great to ethanol and any type of alcohol based fuels. That is why it is the only sealer I use, it works and lasts forever!!!

Brian, Have a 53 and 48 Willys pickup with rusty tanks, like to clean them, little rust in the 53 but not to bad, the 48 hasn't been removed yet, but had some green gunk in carb and fuel pump, would you use the cleaner on them with the rest of the products in the kit? The tank has a drop tube in it for the pickup tube, does it come out and how? These are frame up restorations Thanks so enjoy your videos, Thanks so much.
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 3 жыл бұрын
it is best to get your tanks perfectly clean if you want them to last. There are products out there that work without doing anything except pouring them in the tank. Let the chemicals do the work.

Ok i like what i am hearing about gear lube. As i understand the extreme pressure lube additive is sulfur. I thought GL5 was extreme pressure and contains sulfur, it is evident to me the way the gears take on a yellow hue. I was warned not to use GL5 in my NP435 transmissions because of brass syncros. Apparently the sulfur bonds to the brass and then removes brass whilst in operation. Giving shifting components made of brass very short lives. Upon disassembling an NP435 i discovered they used aluminum syncros. So far no trouble with GL5. T90 has brass syncros i think, and that is the root of the issue with new lube? I am going to be rebuilding my T90 hopefully next winter.
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you did your homework on lube. Yes, sulfur is the problem on yellow metal, brass, bronze, etc.... so no good in the T-90.

metalshaper Coukd I pick your brain some more? The f head engine has an oil jet for the timing gears. Mine is an early model with the .070 jet. It is recommended to reduce that to a .040 for better pressure to the #1 rod journal. How do you solve that issue? I am planning to braze the hole and drill undersize. Thanks!
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 7 жыл бұрын
yes it is best to use the .040" jet. Either find one from a later engine or do just what you said....... braze or weld hole shut and drill a .040" hole. Make sure to point it in the right direction so it lubes the gears correctly.

John, the first thing I do when purchasing a new vehicle is a complete lubricant change. If I am doing a restoration I make the swap when rebuilding each component. If it is a good running vehicle I dump all the lubricants out of axles, transmission, transfer case, etc.... and add the proper stuff. I have the correct lubricants for your vehicle. Just let me know if you are going to change it and what you need. Brian

@metalshaperJeep

I have used many different gas tank sealers and the best I have found is sold by Bill Hirsch products. That being said I usually try to avoid sealers when I can and that is why I am going to be making a new fuel tank for the snowblower jeep. I have a sheet of copper coming in and I am going to make a very nice new fuel tank out of that .

Watch some of my videos on the F head engine rebuild series. The exhaust valves in the F head are like those on your L head. They come out the same way and I show how to do it in the engine rebuild series I am working on. I will show the intake valves next but after that will show the exhaust valves in the block. Follow along with that and you will see how it is done and can do the same on your L head.

I wanted to buy the oil/grease for the transmission. Do you sell it? Where can I get it at? It is for a 1965 Wyllis. My transmission jumps out of high gear. Do you think a regular rebuilt kit will fix this problem? Do I need to change the main drive gear. The bushing in the end of the crank has been changed at that did not fix the problem.

best to look inside and see what is worn out and causing it to jump out of gear. The input shaft may be worn or the syncro unit or blocking rings may be worn out. You need to look inside and see.
