35:36 I disagree that SOAD'S debut is better than Toxicity. The only song that comes close to being filler on Toxicity is Jet Pilot while the Self Titled Album gets weaker past the halfway point with tracks like Peephole and CUBErt. I do love how intense and aggressive the Self Titled album is though.

Agreed that Napalm Death post 'The Code is Red...Long Live the Code' (2005) have just been getting better and better. 'Smear Campaign' is equally as good with the song writing becoming more complex and interesting. 'Apex Predator...Easy Meat' (2015) was flawless and fun to listen to while 2020's 'Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeat' was amazing in its surfing of metal sub-genres and song writing. It had slow tempo, mid-tempo, and fast tempo ND songs. Damn, even the outtakes album from 2022 was flawless in its execution and delivery (that song with the female backing vocals was really quite fun to listen to.)

One album I’d consider overrated is Savatage’s Hall of The Mountain King. It’s great, but it’s not as perfect as people make it out to be and it’s a shame that this is the one I see most people talk about. I just finished their discography recently and personally found Gutter Ballet the much superior record. They up the prog on that one and I feel like the guitar player shines a lot more throughout that record as well as Edge of Thorns. Their final record Poets and Madmen I think gets severely overlooked too. It doesn’t have Criss due to him passing a little after Edge of Thorns, but the writing is still fantastic as the 2 i mentioned and it’s even darker in tone too. One band I don’t see get mentioned enough too whenever Savatage is being discussed is the Helstar. I feel like people “in the know” know how great their mid to late 80s material are, but I don’t see Remnants of War, A Distant Thunder, or Nosferatu get mentioned nearly as much as they should since the guitar playing is incredible and super melodic/neoclassical on those 3.

I understand your perspective because I assume you're younger and you probably weren't around when these older albums came out. But, for a lot of these older releases from Mayhem, Morbid Angel and Venom, they were breaking new ground and doing things that hadn't been done yet. As cliche as it sounds, you had to be there to understand. There wasn't the abundance of extreme metal like there is now. It was a new thing. If you ask me, Venom was the band that started it all, maybe even Hellhammer too. They were not good musicians, and their stuff was really sloppy. But, they were pushing the boundaries. What they did spawned thrash, death and black metal. Sometimes, an album is revered because it started a new genre rather than the quality of its material.

Well, while Sadus was on the 'Swallowed in Black' tour in Europe, they gave Scott Burns a call from a UK airport and shit talked him for Steve being buried on 'Human'. Most overrated albums of all time: Slayer 'Reign in Blood' (Kreator and Dark Angel did better albums in that style that same year...and longer in length); Megadeth 'Peace Sells...And Who's Buying?' (terrible production, easily Randy Burns' worst production, and it doesn't hold a candle to 'Killing is My Business...and Business is Good!' especially when the right mix of the album came out in 2018) ; Death's 'Human' and 'Symbolic' ('Spiritual Healing' and 'Individual Though Patterns' are better in musicianship and listenability); Morbid Angel 'Altars of Madness' and 'Domination' (AOM is a great album [I still have my original LP with the sticker "the ultimate death metal album!""...uh, no], but it is overrated while the Terrorizer album is underrated and 'Domination' just sucks...I'd rather listen to Sinister's 'Hate' which is faster, more accessible, and musically more complex as an album. Erik Rutan was a nice touch but 'Domination' is way, way overrated); Suffocation's 'Effigy of the Forgotten' (yeah, it is a classic but way overmentioned while bands like Revenant, Gorefest, Ripping Corpse, Benediction and Sinister languished in the background while receiving zero play); Napalm Death's 'Scum' and 'Enslavement to Obliteration' (both overrated and they only became a good band when the 'Mentally Murdered' EP was released [I still have my original copy] and there was the roaring double bass drums and much, much better song writing and Bill Steer was still in the band); Metallica 'Kill 'Em All' (you could listen to Exciter, Anvil and a whole host of post-NWOBHM bands to get a better formulation of the same metal); Carcass 'Heartwork' and 'Reek of Putrefaction' (yes, fantastic album, but there were many other bands doing progressive metal before they came along on record and ROP is just terrible in every way); Celtic Frost 'Morbid Tales' (I'm tired of hearing of this album every time I talk about avant-garde metal. TMT is a better produced more accessible album but is also overrated. I probably think 'Vanity/Nemesis' (1989) is my favorite CF album. I agree that 'Monotheist' is heavy as fuck and is a good album. I watched them open for Type O Negative in 2006 back when Martain Ain was still alive. Fun times); Bolt Thrower 'Warmaster' (1991; okay, it is good but the latter half of the album lags like no other, it isn't 'For Victory' [flawless] or 'Realm of Chaos' and 'Those Once Loyal' where it feels like they know what they are doing.) Good list as always dude! Thanks for the recommendation on Gigan. I love it all (their entire discography).

I'm a huge Morbid Angel fan (I think the first two albums are flawless...with the first still being overrated) but I saw them on the 40th anniversary tour (since they've been around in some formation since 1983), and I wanted my money back afterwards that is how bad it was (and it was Trey's birthday that night). Trey is obviously a drunk who cannot separate his craft from his alcoholism and he didn't play the songs right, the sound was terrible, the setlist was awful (only one song from the first three albums? Huh?), and every song sounded the same. I'm tired of the legacy bands when the up and comers in the underground are just more fun to watch (Gorod, Summoning the Lich, Abysmal Dawn, etc. etc.)

Clayman (In Flames): I don't see that this is an overhyped record. Among the listeners of In Flames this one doesn't rank high, but for me it's one of their best on the same leves as The Jester Race or Whoracle. But compared to Colony I thik this is the better record. The concept of harsh and clean vocals is better executed on Clayman. Hatebreeder (COB): Yes, Alexi's voice is not the best, but on "Are You Dead Yet?" his weak and distorted vocals sounds worse. The sound is also less melodic and more thrash (which is an adjustment to the american listening habits and is therefore more suitable for the american market). I like this record but "Follow the Reaper" is better executed.

@@sirdacier7159 Who's "fans"? I don't know if I've ever seen Megadeth put on the same pedestal as Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, or even Metalica. I've seen people say they're the best of the Big Four, and I'd be inclined to agree. I've had to deal with almost 30 years of people telling me how great Metallica are, so that's a hard pass, I never cared for Anthrax at all, and Slayer has some fantastic records but I don't go back to them near as much as Megadeth.

See on Magma v Fortitude, I'm the opposite. Into The Storm is the filliest filler song to ever fill, Grind is two halves of two good songs that *do not* fit together, Hold On has some of Gojira's cringest lyrics, and any song that I can compare 1 to 1 between the two albums in any way (i.e. Sphinx and Only Pain), most of the time I prefer the Magma one. And the emotional weight of Magma is just way heavier, even if the album isn't. Global Warming and Low Lands are the only two Gojira songs to ever bring me to tears. Now, that said, I still quite like Fortitude, even if I have problems. If we wanna talk about overrated Gojira albums, L'enfant Sauvage is right there. It's very clear looking back as a relatively new fan (discovered the band in Feb. 2023) that LFS is the band in a transitional period between the prog and death stuff of TWOAF and back and the more melodic rock and groove stuff on Magma and Fortitude, sits L'enfant Sauvage, who doesn't do either as well as anything that came before or after, and any song on that record can easily be compared to a different song in their discography that did it way better. Esoteric Surgery > The Axe. The Gift Of Guilt? Take both Global Warming and Ouroboros over that.

for me... I honestly think a fair amount of Metallica albums come across very overrated to me now.. but I don't know if maybe that's just because it was an entry level band for me that I listened to absolute death and then when I discovered other bands I never felt the need to go back and listen to them. ill always admit that they got me interested in playing music and metal music in general but I genuinely cannot say I enjoy any of their music anymore. PT1: Mayhem: Totally agree. Decent album, theres are much better during that time. MA-Altars- Its a great album, but personally in my opinion Covenant is their best. Domination is above average, but not THAT great. Sepultura- Never been a huge fan other than Chaos. ...Roots is good, but...again not THAT great. Dillinger- Never liked them so ... Death- Took me a long time to actually get into this album, but it grew on me quite well. I def wouldnt call it overrated. Maiden- eh, not my thing. Exodus- never got into them. Opeth- Meh, a few good songs here and there. Toxicity-great album Master of Puppets- Its pretty much perfect. Lamb of god- a few great songs, never got into them much. In Flames- Hard to consider any of them overrated. They set the standard. Deafheaven- lol nah. Bathory- wasnt my thing years ago, but still a really cool album. Not sure if its overrated though. Napalm Death- Only album i like of theirs is Fear, Emptiness.. The rest...meh. Reign- nah, its not overrated. Its 30 mins of get pumped every time you listen to it. Seasons IS more dynamic, but it also has some real duds. PT2: Opeth- still meh. Korn- Untouchables. Its good. I dont think its overrated. Issues is a a great album. BTBAM- Lol, nah. SFU- man, i loved this album when it came out, but it DEFINITELY doesnt hold up. None of their other albums are even worth a listen. Tool- a good album, but not a GREAT album. Carcass- Never got into these guys except for Heartwork. What a fantastic album. Slipknot- First two albums crush. Everything after, turned to Slipknot lite (aka Stone Sour). Some good songs in their work after the first two, but not very good albums. Dream Theater- Lol Nope. Venom- Terrible. A legacy based on an album title. Black album- Nah, not overrated. There was nothing else to do for them after and/or in "thrash/whatever youd call ..Justice. But its the album EVERY band wish they could make. I dont think theres any bad songs...actually, Of Wolf and Man is a bit goofy, but the rest make up for it, although if i never hear Sandman again, im ok with that. PT3 Meshuggah- Ok album not my fave. Nothing rules. Enslaved- Tied and tried to listen to these guys, their just so boring. Meh. Disturbed- Good rock album. Probably a bit overrated in their discography. 40 Below Summer!?!?...looool That album is terrible. Black Dahlia- Miasma is a fantastic album all the way through. SOAD- great album. First one is def better, but they expanded on the sound with Toxicity. Linkin Park. EVERYTHING they have done is completely overrated. Some really good songs here and there, but thousands of bands that have much better output. At the gates- Another band ive tried and tried with. They just dont click with me. Gojira- I like this band a lot. I didnt like this album though, not sure why. Celtic Frost- Cool stuff, but not anything i listen to regularly. Monotheist however, is one of the best albums ever made.... Megadeath- Countdown is a killer album. Nothing like their old output, but took a step into a heavy rock sound and still had that Megadeth touch. Great stuff. PT4 Priest- Screaming, Defenders of the Faith, and Painkiller are the only albums i listen to somewhat regularly. Cannibal- The Bleeding. PERFECT death metal album. Nothing else to be said. Whitechapel- First album rules. Never bothered with the rest. Peace Sells... Another perfect album. Nothing bad. Same with Rust... just perfect. Pantera- Killer album, IDK why anyone would NOT like it. Pretty bad take with this one. Although Vulgar is my go to as well. Slaughter to Prevail- This band sucks. Seriously. Machine Head- First album rules, there are some great songs in their discography, but i never listen to them. Soilwork- Perfect Album. Consistently great band. BURZUM- Too bad Varg is...well...Varg. FIlosofem is the best, but they all have their place, and all are great albums. Maiden- Just dont get into them. I get why theyre popular and are obviously an important band...just not for me. PT5 Avenged- Great album, close to perfect. Never bothered with the rest. Insomnium- Nope. completely boring band. EVERY album of theirs just trudges along...meh. Sleep Token- Great stuff. Lots of great songs, with lots of not great songs, but the ones that are good are really good. Zeal and Ardor?!?!? LOOOOL nah. Cattle- The band gets better with each album. Death Atlas is fantastic. Anthropophocene is underrated. Exhorder- Boring when it came out, still boring after all these years. Bolt Thrower- IVth is fantastic. EVERY Bolt Thrower is fantastic. Exodus- Lol Nope. In Flames- Good album. Theres just too many (of theirs) thatre better. Testament- VERY hit and miss, but over all a good album. Bodom- Never like them. PT6 Death Angel- Nope. Terrible. Job for a Cowboy- Was cool when it came out, just doesnt hold up. They have grown to be an amazing band though. Sodom- nope. SFU- lol already said it. Priest- Sad Wings. Nope.

@vciotoli2126 I feel the best part of melodeath is that it's not just the Gothenburg style that everyone talks about and Carcass. Some have a more progressive metal leaning like Scar Symmetry or Ne Oblivscaris. Some songs by longtime death metal bands like Entombed are very much melodeath songs. Dissection has some great releases that ride the line between melodic death metal and chilling black metal. There is a band called Redface I just recently got into as well who have a very unique blend of sounds. Sylosis, Dark Tranquility, Into Eternity, Sacrementum. Obviously no one is going to like everything, but I guess my plea is to not give up on melodeath. It's a diverse and influential genre that even more brutal bands take notes from here and there
