I would love to see a video from you about these two impressive individuals. Best regards, Joshi

I love the history of the Praetorians, but my god, what a bunch of unmitigated clowns and buffoons they were. Repeatedly plunging the empire into ruinous civils wars and occasionally actually bumping off a rare competent emperor because their bribes weren't big enough lmao They were an absolute liability! A huge number of emperors would have been a lot safer 'without' their loyal bodyguards around.

If you know about the spiritual side of human nature, especially on the scale of nations, you'll know that one of the main generational sins of Romans was regicide, beginning with the foundation of the Republic (excluding the myth) and strongly resurfacing with Julius Caesar. They never had a stable, multigenerational dynasty over the whole people, as many later European nations did.

I didn't think much of the post-original Star Wars movies, like The Last Jedi, but that Praetorian Guard fight scene was awesome. Those guards looked fierce, clad in all red space age armor, wielding various exotic lightsaber weaponry. Kylo Ren and Rey battling them in that eerie red throne room was so much fun to watch. Loved that scene. I would love to see more lore about those guards in future Star Wars projects. I'm guessing that they are called Praetorian, even in Star Wars lingo.
@BlokedAgain5 сағат бұрын
One of the worst choreographed fight scenes in Star Wars tbh. Also, from a story telling perspective, trash. But, you're 100% correct in that visually it was amazing - Something that sums up that movie as a whole. Visual perfection. Everything else, garbage. Also, you're correct in their name. They are called the "Elite Praetorian Guard" of Supreme Leader Snoke. The Guard consist of eight 'sentinels' divided into four pairs, with each pair with unique weapons. Their red armor is an echo of Emperor Palpatine’s royal protectors.

Mid Republican era, Consuls would often choose 500 men from the Socii states in Italy, those qonquered by Rome but independent in some manners, supplying rome with Alae Allied Infantry flanking armys but also the core of the cavalry since Rome lacked this and only drew it from the Equestrian class those required to serve from Senatorial families before entering the senate, such as Samnites, Brettians, Lucanians, Messapians, Umbrians and Etruscan. 500 of the best often Samnites where chosen personally by a consul when raising an army known as Extraordinarii, this unit was the best and would either act as Consular Bodyguards, scouting force "Consularis", flanking units, reserves or whereever they where needed. It is said that Africanus used theese at Zama but he recruited 500 veteran Latin colonists (previously banished to Sicily for neglect of duty at Cannae and where veterans and flocked to Africanus side, wanting another chance to return home to Latium and prove themselves) instead on Sicily durning his Governship as Proconsul before the invasion of Africa wich was also considered ileegal war since the Senate denied his request to raise an army holding Imperium and they named him Imperator after this victory at Zama before the Senate gave him his second triumph. After his victory (wich the senate feared) they even wanted to crown him as king. As an edit, I know these are not Praetorians but it is a early concept, they where loyal to Africanus whom they named Imperator and not the Senate and state that previously banished them and revoked their citizenship alongisde wifes and children, forcing them out of Latium and even Italy as an insult.

I think the word 'praetor' is derived from ''pre + ''ire' meaning 'to go before' or in other words a 'leader'
@nuclearmedicineman62708 сағат бұрын
Not necessarily. Could just mean literally "guy who goes first". The one who carries the leader's symbols, like fasces, or aquila, at the head of the column. Not a leader, but still an honored position.
@SimuLord6 сағат бұрын
It's interesting the way the "guy who goes first" became the second-highest magistracy in the Republic behind the consuls. Reminds me of the way the second-highest league in Dutch soccer is the "First Division" (Erstedivisie) which is second to the "Honored Division" (Eredivisie) on the Dutch soccer pyramid.

Praetorians have been fascinating to me, because I happened across what I might believe are the origins of my family name. I was reading something on Roman history and came across the name "Hendricus," and immediately started wondering if there's any connection to my name "Hendrix." After reading about how the "H" sound and the "us" sounds may have been made silent through the years, I wondered if the name "Enrique" might have also had similar origins. So far, I have only been able to trace my name back (with certainty) to Normans. My own branch being sent to invade Ireland to free them from the Viking enslavers, about 1000 years ago.
