My Dad would turn the box up on its end so that he could reach down and take the rabbit out without it running out of the box. I remember once when I was probably about 6 he raised the door on the box expecting to see a rabbit but instead a house cat jumped out of that box and ran straight up the front of his shirt and over his shoulder and took off. I don't think he thought it was near as funny as I did. After that we put hardware cloth on the back of the boxes so that you could see what was in there before you raised the door.

I always caught more possums, when I was very small, older friend of my grandmother made me a rabbit box, that night I put it out and caught a possum, took it hoop, had some chicken wire, went from edge of storage shed with wire then around a tree back to shed a few feet away. Dumped the possum over in there, he immediately, climbed the tree and left,I didn't realize, they could climb, lol.

Justro, unrelated to this video, since you work on big grinding stones, would you happen to know where to find a small, home-sized, basic, non-motorized grinding stones set? I've seen pictures on-line of Asian or South American people using them; they pour some grain in the center of the top stone and then turn by hand and the ground meal comes out from between the stones, but I can't find that hand-turned original 2-stone model being sold anywhere. PS: I have meat rabbits and they like whole-grain oats a lot more than apples.

True story: I was raised by my grandparents on a rural farm. The happiest times of my entire life. As a young lad I would use a box trap to trap rabbits & I would pet them for awhile & let them go. What I am about to say someone may say is child abuse, but it wasn't my grandma was teaching me a life lesson. But one morning I caught a rabbit & my grandma told me to bang that rabbit against that tree over there & we would have it for supper. I don't know how many times I told her "No I couldn't do it" while crying my eyes out. So my grandma cut a switch off of a tree & every time I said "no" she would swat me with that switch until finally I dispatched the rabbit. She fried that rabbit & simmered it in gravy that night for supper. It was some of the best eaten I've ever ate. She told me that there may come a time when the family was short on food & I would have to do what was necessary to feed my family. ❤🙏🙏🙏🙏❤

I ost my original long winded reply so I’ll try again!! Mom and I were having a pretty hard time after daddy passed in 1955. I was 11 yrs old and she made a rabbit gum to supply a meat source. I was just thinking a few weeks ago about the one she built, I was so amazed by all she knew. Sge had a way of skinning a rabbit or a squirrel without getting hair all over the meat. I remember because I had to hold their legs while she worked!!!
@ku4ap2 жыл бұрын
@@lenoracook2096 the way my grandfather kept the hair off is after dispatched he tied the hind legs to the clothesline and used his knife to ring around the legs to separate the fur from meat a quick downward thrust would remove the fur down to the neck where the, uh waste, could be removed.
