Mike’s piece supports my theory about how these impacts could deliver and introduce precious metals to the local host rock. Nice one btw.

I am very interested in a timestamp please. The largest mine in Canada is in the Sudbury impact area. Creighton Mine is a producer of nickel (directly from the impacting meteorite), copper, and platinum-group elements (PGE).

Purple salts were found to have amino acids...Could those 2 purple bits be that kind of salt? UPDATE: Thanks Pat! (Both for not giving the answer right away and for answering this question later. On zoom, those look the same shade as the purple salts I found with a cellphone microscope on a massive touchable meteorite on display then at the Carneigie Science Center right after the Chan/Zalensky article came out. (Nobody gave a hoot when I told them it was there...sighhhh.) But yes, same color - my toes are crossed for you - now I will have to try to find the follow-up to that for the full answer. I know there was another found that had even more amino acids. I will hope that was yours👍

Please excuse the delay in my response. This kind of comment and conversation is why this channel exists. I am super thankful that we are able to show things that really can't be seen elsewhere and have it recall items that you've seen first hand. It's amazing that tiny little crystals and chemicals arrive to this planet in the most violent of manners.

Hello, I am learning a lot about meteorites from your channel. Question for Mike Kelley if you can pass it on please. Does the enstatite in his meteorite display fluorescence under filtered UV light, LW or SW? Same question for you sir, especially if you have a piece of the Cumberland Falls meteorite. Thank you.
@TopherspinMeteorites2 жыл бұрын
That is awesome news! Thank you so much for the positive feedback. Neither of my Cumberland Falls have any fluorescent minerals present. I just checked. I will ask Mike about his Enstatite.
@dsvilko2 жыл бұрын
You mean because enstatite rich aubrites (such as Norton County) are known to fluoresce? I believe there the fluorescence is linked to extremely low Fe content and that is not normally the case with E chondrites.

Question: For cooling/lube, are they using water or oil or...? I ask because some rocks are so reactive to water, what do you use - especially if you want to have them analyzed for composition at some point?
@TopherspinMeteorites2 ай бұрын
95% of all cutting is done in distilled water. For ultra rare carbonaceous and things going to science for deep study, dry cutting is the only way to really do that. It wastes a lot of saw blade and also some material, but is the cleanest and least contaminating. There are some times when you're cutting Irons or Pallasites where you use a thin amount of cutting lubricant made to be diluted with water and used in cutting high metal samples. Either way as soon as you're done, soak it in ultra pure rubbing alcohol for several hours. Then put in a dehydrator or convection oven overnight at a low temperature.

is it possible to cut small meteorites (Iron and Ordinary Chondrite) with diamond wire attached to coping saw?
@TopherspinMeteorites2 жыл бұрын
That is definitely not the preferred way to do it. It will leave very rough cut and you will need to sand it down smooth. But technically, it would work.

You sound like you know a lot, so could you look at a slice of rock and say if you thought it was a Meteorite? Also do you have an email to show a slice view. Obviously I wouldn't ask if it didn't look like one, but more so because I didn't expect what I saw inside, it looks like chondrules and glass but I thought it was a rock that would have had large crystals in, but inside is a jumble?
@TopherspinMeteorites Жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out! I'm glad to hear you're interested in meteorites. If you have a rock that you suspect might be a meteorite, I recommend reaching out to a Facebook group like "Meteorite or MeteorWRONG" or a testing company like England Meteoritical Services (NEMS). These groups and services are dedicated to helping people identify potential meteorites. NEMS will have the expertise and equipment necessary to properly examine your sample and make a determination for under $50. I do not provide email consultations or direct identification services, as it's important to use proper scientific methods and tools to make an accurate assessment. The Facebook groups I mentioned are your best bet for getting a reliable identification. If they say it is a meteorite, please come back to me. Best of luck with your inquiry!

great chan we live on the northern ny canada border the st lawrence sea way where all the rivers meet . our new retirement hobby is rock hounding . you can find silver gold and rocks that glow under uv here we are just learning . my question is we have hundreds of miles of stone walls made in the early 1800s untouched . they cleared the fields every rock went on the wall now a forest is there its in the Adirondacks . what are the odds of finding a good rock in those walls ? we have been looking for 1812 war stuff with a simplex and a pointer . we myes well learn to look for rocks too any advice ?
@TopherspinMeteorites5 ай бұрын
Congratulations on retiring in paradise. If the wall was built in the early 1800s, there's probably not going to be any recorded falls that you can look for maps of. I would literally take a walk around the wall and look at each rock individually. It is very common as you may know, for farmers to pitch a rock out of their field while planting or harvesting and all those rocks get collected on the outside of the fields sometimes meteorites are dug up. I support people with rock identification services by an educated panel of experts for $25 a month on Patreon if you find one that sparks your interest. Happy hunting.
