Drill out hole to 6mm or same size as a wood dowel. Glue in a wood dowel with wood glue. Cut flush. Use the other half of the dowel for the second hole. Cut flush. Screw into dowel to fix hinge. Stronger fix than original into chipboard. Job done. Simples. Wife happy because I've not wasted her baking foil.

That foil will last all of about 2 minutes, you could see when he inserted the screws that they bottomed and we're still turning, he would have been better served just putting the screws back in with just the glue.As an automotive engineer I can tell you that that open tapered thread will offer next to no clamping force in that foil, the screw being held in entirely by a bit of glue and some friction, its ability to retain that little clamping force will be rapidly overcome by the movement and weight of the door it's self and the transfer from the snapping action on the hinge as it shuts. My method is to router out a rectangle around the recess leaving around 3mm at the back edge to retain the outer finish and then glue in some hardwood blocks and recess them to accept the hinge. I've done a few that way, none have failed👍

Seems like an pretty convoluted way to do the same that you could achieve with a dowel and wood glue (which is how presumably even a _40_ year old carpenter normally fixes this issue).

@@DMNL2 - "They" (the original inventors) had it more than 80 years ago. It didn't start being mass-produced until 1958, though (65 years ago), by Eastman (a.k.a. Kodak). Originally it was used just by the industry, but Loctite started selling it to the general public in the late 60s (around 55 years ago). All those numbers are bigger than 40. Anyway, nothing in my post refers to using super glue "40 years ago".

i have a table my great grandfather made. It has a pedestal center, and the tabletop can be turned upright by virtue of a hinge on the pedestal. Tabletop is quite heavy, and after 90 years, between wood shrinking and the weight of the table top, a couple of the screws gave way. My brother-in-law tipped me off to the toothpick method, and it worked incredibly well. I was nervous as anything to try it - GGfather's table has thousands of small inlays, a real piece of art that I was terrified I'd ruin.

Hi Benton, Reminds me of my neighbour coming in for a cup of tea to calm down after bringing his wife home from A&E. They were out and he bought some superglue to fix something in the car and when he was done, asked her to look after the bottle until they got home she put it in her handbag. They stopped for a bite to eat at a restaurant, he came back from a loo break to waiters surrounding her in panic. She was screaming. During his break, she'd put lipstick on and her eye drops in.

1st problem is using the drill driver to install wood screws into MDF or particle board. Way too difficult to control the amount of torque applied to the screw which will cause the screw to strip out in those types of materials. Just because mankind invented portable, easy to use electrically powered tools, doesn't mean that they are the "right tool for the job". Especially in soft materials like MDF particle board and plastics.

You could also try car body filler. Just mix a bit with its hardener and fill the holes. It should be strong enough to drill a new hole into once fully hardened.

There is no need to make a very simple repair so complicated. All that is needed is a bottle of PVA glue, a sharp chisel, a small hammer, damp rag and a piece of soft wood. Preferably radiata pine. Split a piece lengthways off the pine probably 75 mm (3 inches ) long using the hamme and then split/shap smaller pieces with the chisel by hand so they have a long point and are approx max thickness of a pencil. Place the door face down on a flat surface with a towel or similar on top to protect the finish. Fill the screw holes with glue, tap the splintered pine into the holes, break them off and carefully chisel any wood left above the surface of the door. Wipe any excess glue off the door and chisel with the damp rag. Screw the hinges on ensuring they are correctly aligned, without drilling any holes preferably using a small impact driver ( do not over tighten) . Rehang door. Job done permanently.

Most people would have just glued in a dowel of some toothpick chunks, or filled it with hot glue, or any other manner of simple abd cheaper options. By the way... Picks plus superglue = safety glasses

Or even better, use cotton wool + superglue. Far easier than aluminium foil as it sets almost instantly and is stronger than the foil solution.

Is stripping the screw thread an essential part of the procedure? 'Cos it looks horribly like that is happening from the way the leccy screwdriver bit keeps going round after the screw is driven home...

You can buy hinge repair plates, one type does the door, the other type does the unit carcass, only a couple of pounds each, permanent repair, no messing about with crap shoddy repairs ideas, “real” joiners/carpenter’s use them 👍

Why not just do it right from the start? Use the hinge with the pre installed plastic dowel on the screw, intended for particle board/MDF panels. Or go buy the insert and fix it the way it was designed to used.

@@Martin-pb7ts BS, take some ownership and stop making excuses. If you can core a 35mm hole in a door you can also do some 10mm holes. Either that or get out of the f’ing business and stop turning out shoddy products.
