Caring During COVID-19: A Day in the Life of a Medical ICU Chaplain

During the time of coronavirus, how has spiritual care changed for our most vulnerable?
We followed Patricia Lewis, ICU nursing director, and Aaron Mussat, staff chaplain, as the two teamed up to help patients fighting COVID-19 in the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Medical ICU.

True Joy thank you. Unfortunately my dad passed away this morning. It’s just so difficult. My mom didn’t have a chance to say a goodbye to him. He was at the hospital for weeks with no family beside and helpless. Words cannot describe how hurt I’m inside.

Watching them taking care of covid wearing only aprons and not totally using coverall white suits really gives me a goose bumps. I can say, were still blessed because we are using coverall white suits here in riyadh. Godbless to all of us frontliners.

This is the sugarland location. I'm one of the proning team. Me and my team absolutely love our hospital. Everyone in ICU is wonderful and Aaron is truly the salt of the earth!

Yes these and all nurses and docs have a commitment to care. It is a travesty that society and community/ government leaders have let these caregivers down because they cant bear to take the most basic principles to stop the spread. In my country we have not politicized wearing a mask and the public at large accept and follow measures. Very sad to know much of this suffering could have been prevented through proactive measures .
