Pity the only remaining mechanical bell at the crossing just ticks rather than rings at this point

Surprised at how quiet the trains are, and how noisy the crossing gates are.

The Windy City is the second-busiest place for passenger rail traffic in the U.S., but that's still a drop in the bucket compared to the volume of suburban and inter-city trains it saw during the Golden Age of Rail Travel ):

Awesome. I posted 3 videos of Metra Madness at the same spots, plus Roosevelt Road, back in November. I love it. I have subbed. Scott

at 3:56, I like that how amtrak took these classic loco and turn them into baggage/cab car. They need to do the same thing with the GE Genesis loco.

Not possible with the way it’s designed. The outer shell is part of the structure, so if you cut a big hole in it for a baggage compartment you’re compromising the crash safety. That said, the Charger is unreliable enough that Amtrak plans to keep about a third of their P42s around just to keep the network from breaking down in the event of snowfall, so they’ll be around for a while.

@@GintaPPE1000they are converting some but they will leave the engines in them for weight to avoid having to redo the suspension system they are mostly using old ones that are already in deadlines for engine problems Amtrak needs new cab cars given the metroliners are way past the end of their lives and the hhp-c are supposed to help replace come but they need way more

Honestly shocked Chicago is even that busy with its railroads, you'd think they'd be more out of the way.

Something I keep wondering. With these trains where the engine seems to be on the tail, and the driver seems to be in the cab in the passenger car, Does the "engine " push the train? Or is there another engine under the passenger car where the driver sits (or also along the train under some of the other cars too?) Sorry for the stupid question, I'm used to trains that have the same driver cab on both ends, and engines under half the train (every few bogies)
@hollysubrailfan18917 ай бұрын
yes the locomotive is the power to the train and the cab car is where the engineer operates
@granthogden47326 ай бұрын
@@hollysubrailfan1891 ok, thanks. I just thought it was weird. As though the driver is sitting in the back, driving the train backwards.
