Metroid Dread - Early Screw Attack Short Boost (Tutorial)

It's been a while since I made this video and having had more time to mess around with short boost I have one correction to make. Rather than sweeping the l-stick just one quarter of the way go for a tiny bit more than one quarter (between half circle and quarter circle) it seems to make the flash cancel part more consistent. Also, when doing the setup, allow Samus to morph roll until she stops moveing before you fire the grapple beam, and also to fully complete the dash melee animation before flash shifting. This ensures Samus goes deep into the door frame which makes the backward flash shift more lenient.

OK I think my replies were lost to the void during the premiere, but this trick saves 1m00-1m20 in Artaria because you don't have to setup camera lock anymore and can now do the Magus Skip route. There may be another time save for doing this instead of the camera lock once you're back from acquiring Speedboost. So you have at least that 1 minute of retries to keep the run going at a better pace!

Great video!! Definitely worth the wait. For fun, I did the shinesink to blue portal, short charge and shinesink to screw attack. Not faster but was a fun way to practice.

I need to make a note here that it is imperative to position oneself at the distance that Arkandy specifies here before trying the tech. This is when I noticed that Samus started getting pulled back properly. Getting closer!!

Loved the video. The entire thing. It covered everything. I’ve been getting it sometimes a few in 10 minutes. Sometimes it take me an hour Lolol. If nothing changes this is going to be actual hell to get in a run cuz of the health depletion. That being said. This is going to be very exciting for viewers to watch top runners attempt in runs. :)

I personally don't release the A button. From what I noticed if its done correctly it should completely cancel out the flash shift. Easier for me to focus on the control stick motions that way

I never would have thought that Dread would be designed to have THIS many intended hidden mechanics that allow players to sequence break so creatively. The game rivals Super Metroid in terms of the number of breaks you can do, which is a massive fucking achievement.

I doubt the flash shift short boost is intended but certainly allows a very welcome sequence break lol.

i literally can't believe people are still finding new tech in Dread. but i guess i really shouldn't be too surprised, considering how much new tech and routing continued to be found in SM years after its release also, why are people calling it short boost and not short charge? lmao

Short speedboost / short boost sounds fine to me. I guess one point against short charge would be the quick charge, which lets your charge beam more quickly. There are a few spots where we've been close to finding new things but... close yet so far. I'm sure theres yet a lot of tech to be found. Dread's barely a little more than a half year old!

After not playing for months, it only took me about 30 minutes to do the short boost and shine sink clip successfully... Which is about the same amount of time it took for my switch to turn back on while charging from dead.

i think i get it right but my speedboost cancel at the ledge. Do I need to be faster on the rotating of the stick ?

That sounds like you're doing the stick rotation correctly, or close, but going forward too soon. Give it a few more frames between finishing the short boost motion and starting pushing the stick to go forward / speedboost. Although it could also be that youre rotating slow, or both. Hard to say without seeing.

Can you skip the frozen artaria event with this method?

Indeed, you never have to do frozen artaria if you get screw attack early like this. After acquiring gravity suit, you already have screw attack so you can go straight to the double bots fight at the top instead of taking the elevator to artaria.

does this require wave beam or nah? is this faster than shine sinking to get to the artaria teleportal that bring you to unfrozen artaria? also in a casual unpatched run i can get invincibility from an emmi door right?

This is way before wave beam. Taking the blue portal is like a minute slower and you can indeed setup invincibility to bypass the cold damage

Yeah but how do you do this without Diffusion like G Heinz did or Dayyniel did. I only managed to get one shot through with Dayyniels method. And I have zero idea what angle u use for the melee method Love your vids btw mate your chops at this game are insane

It is more difficult indeed. Not by the sheer number of inputs, as it is for the ssc, but because rotating the l-stick for the backward flash shift cancel and timing when samus starts going forward are both very precise in this instance of short boost.
