Dark Beam the LIKE BUTTON for me if you enjoyed this video. I’m really curious to hear what you guys think about this, please let me know your thoughts about Metroid Prime 2 and if you think it’s been fairly criticized over the years and really needs these updates to it’s gameplay, or if you think there is nothing at all that needs to be changed with the game for the heavily rumored potential Remaster coming in 2024. Thanks for the support.

I beat this one the Gamecube and i AM almost done with the remaster of prime 1, i still want prime 2 to be here again, the Quality of life that you mention are good things that will be usefull will be an upgrade that allow you to regenerate beam ammo, since we have expansión for ammmo then we can have that skill/feature since that will make the grinding for ammmo non neccesary

I can't say I agree about the backtracking. The game only forces you to do it a couple of times and each time the level desing is made in a way that quickly puts you back where you need to go. The circular design of the world map also helps in this aspect. It works much better than it did in Prime 1, where I found myself costantly going through Magmoor caverns which is basically a big hallway that connects areas and doesn't even have a boss fight. As for the enviroments, while they could have made the Temple Grounds and Agon Waste a bit more different in their color palette, it works for the mood they were trying to achieve and the art desing is what makes it stand out. The architecture, the patterns on the walls, the various plants, the quality of the textures etc... are all much more distinct and original than what Prime 1 has to offer. Also having rocky mountains, a desert wasteland, a swamp and a hi tech fortress for areas avoids the usual cliché of grass, lava and ice areas many games, Metroid Prime included fall into.

Yeah the backtracking is a "general consensus" thing that the majority of complaints about the game stem. I only don't like the backtracking from the Energy Controller Rooms personally but that's just me.

The ammo, I think, was designed for the player to use it with intentionality. If you use it right, only using Light beam in Dark Aether (or against Ing possessed enemies), and Dark beam in Light Aether, and you're not just spamming shots of it but taking some time to lock-on and aim/time your shots so they hit, you probably won't notice much issue with running out of ammo. Also taking advantage of Dark beams charged ability to freeze enemies and destroy them with a missile is fun. If you are just spamming Dark and Light shots blindly at everything and running out of ammo, or being too conservative and only using Dark and Light beams for bosses, you're not going to enjoy those systems as much. The design and execution with what they were going for works. They just don't really convey to the player how they should interact with it (although receiving light ammo from enemies defeated with Dark beam and vice versa IS a pretty big hint).
@SuperMetalDave64

Right. Personally I never had a problem with the ammo system and never really run out of ammo....which kind of makes it feel like the ammo system isn't really needed. It's all good either way for me.

@@SuperMetalDave64 I think it was implemented because Dark and Light beam are both considerably more powerful than the Power beam (I mean, they are basically the Plasma and Ice beams from Prime 1 with different shaders), and you get both of them very early in the game. The developers didn't want you to basically forego the Power beam twenty minutes into the game by using the very powerful Light beam all the time (and occasionally switching to the Dark beam when Light beam was less effective).

MP1 was my favorite game of all time……. And then I only got through about 4 hours of MP2 before I didn’t pick it up again a decade+ later 😂😭 For me, I was in middle school when MP1 came out, but was just in a really busy stage of high school when MP2 released and then didn’t even bother picking up MP3 when it released when I was in college. I’ve since gone through and completed all 3 and proudly say MP2 is my favorite of the trio 😍 Definitely the hardest and most unsettling. But I remember being so in shock when I made it to the Sanctuary Fortress futuristic sky tower place and had no idea that excised for so many years. Anyways, great video!

Prime 2 is my favorite Metroid game, and is among the greatest games I've ever played. Prime 1 is a brilliant translation of Super Metroid in 3D, just as Ocarina of Time is of A Link to the Past. Prime 2 is where I felt the Prime series developed its own identity, and it knocked it out of the park.

Prime 1 Had the perfect Beam system allowing you to freely switch between them and use them to your hearts content (a step forward). Prime 2 limited you with beam ammo and also had less beams especially the annihilator beam was nearly useless since it ate your ammo (wrong direction). Prime 3 just replaced your beam essentially beam upgrade (a step back) while its a fine system and works great just like the classics, they had made a better, more rewarding and fun system in Prime 1.
@SuperMetalDave64
@SuperMetalDave64 11 ай бұрын
The ammo system does kind of feel not needed tbh when you just can farm some plants and get all of it back really quickly. Prime 2 is the only Prime game to have ammo for your beam too.
@lukerne9260
@lukerne9260 11 ай бұрын
The beam ammo is one of the best upgrades from Prime 1. It adds a lot more depth to the combat, as you now have a reason to use all the beams unlike Prime 1 where the only reason to switch is when you see an enemy of a specific color. The energy beam is weaker but doesn't have ammo, the dark beam is stronger in the light world and the light beam is stronger in the dark world. The fact that killing an enemy with one beam gives you the ammo for the other is also a great mechanic, forcing you to think more about what's the best beam to use if you want to keep ammo of a certain beam. All of this adds a layer of strategy that's completely missing in Prime 1, where 95% of the time you're just mindlessly mashing whichever beam you have selected with no repercussions.

@@shadonxarian4177 They definitely made ammo with the idea that you be intentional with which beams you use, when, and to not just spam them. That's the design of the ammo system and it works quite well. Unfortunately they do very little to convey this design to players who just like to spam whatever is strongest, or likes to save limited resources for only when needed/big boss battles.

Personally at first I also was sceptic on the ammo in Prime 2 but learned to love it and it was one of the best decisions made by the developers, also the fact it was so hard made me love it even more. I would be pro to the upgrades as mentioned and the QoL updates, but also prefer it to be as difficult as the original Gamecube version. The much easier Wii version they could call that Casual mode or easy mode or something. Then the normal mode as GC difficult was and we need the hard mode back as well. Prime 2 to this date is my favorite Prime game and probably my most favorite Metroid game of all time. Perhaps the people who found it to difficult never played A Link to the Past 🤔 which was quite similair in the light and dark world idea, or better said that idea was used for Prime 2 🤔

Thanks for the comment, you are in the minority in terms of liking the ammo system, I've already seen multiple comments from others that say they didn't like that part of the game. Yeah I hope they go with the GC difficulty on the Remaster. Just give us more options, and QOL can also be something optional or have it be "like for like" with the GC game as a choice, since it wouldn't be hard to do. Small changes (not making it easier, but more so to the map/travel etc) can make it a lot more accessible to new players.

@@SuperMetalDave64 I believe the idea of the ammo especially early on kinda forced you as a player to play more strategic instead of all guns blazin, but I also understand it's not for everyone. If you had unlimited ammo on Light, Dark (and later Annihilator beam using both ammos) I sincery believe you would be way to overpowered as player. But if played properly(some early backtracking) you could obtain an additional ammo expansion prior to every main boss, giving you 100 Ammo at Armorbis, 150 at the bug boss (forgot its name Dark Cheeka or something?) And a whopping 200 for Quadraxis, which btw was my second favorite boss in the game he was awesome. Emperor Ing was badass though, but Quadraxis sheer size alone was ridiculous and Metroid style awesome. I do like to know what others didn't like about the game besides the ammo and the darker tones, especially as you said early on.

Prime 2 is my favorite game of all time. Well I guess it’s tied with Bloodborne now 😂. A lot of these points are fair criticism but they have never distracted from the the overall package of this game. The ammo makes combat way more tactical and fun compared to the other prime games. The music atmosphere and environments are way more interesting and moody. When I first played I was a little turned off by again waste until I started reading the lore and realizing it used to be a beautiful grassland before the collision. The difficulty spike also makes revisiting this game so much fun too. Also love the dark world and how stressful it is. It really makes you free it in the beginning and as you get stronger the threat starts to reduce. I think a remaster could also really help the dark world. It is held back with the muddy textures of the GameCube. If we got some new lighting and clean textures the dark world would really pop, especially on an oled. Anyways I could gush about prime 2 all day. Love it to death and I pray Nintendo gives it a proper remaster.

The moody intro, the mystery of Aether, the atmosphere throughout. Don't know how Temple Grounds and Agon Wastes look the same, they always seemed different to me. And no, neither have tons of colours, but you know, this is Metroid. Thats how it builds its great atmosphere. And Dark Aether had atmosphere in spades! I think its important to note you're never in there too long, and its map is way more condensed and usually sectioned off into pieces. Didn't even mention the beauty of the Sanctuary Fortress too!

I heard that Ing in this game actually descended from the Phaz-Ing aka the Phazon variant of Inglets encountered late in Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. It's said that the Phaz Ing that were on the Leviathan that crashed into Aether and toar open the the rift that created the Dark Aether Dimension, we're some how altered or simply evolved from beings of Phazon to beings of Darkness.

Great video! Thank you! When I first played this game on the GameCube, I absolutely loved it!! The boss fights were incredibly tough! I got to the end where you’re supposed to get the keys to fight the final boss and I regret to this day that I stopped playing and never finished it! Hopefully a remaster comes and I can finally finish the game all these years later!

@@SuperMetalDave64 my most grudging thing about MP2:E is it's environmental story telling in the beginning with federation, which creates a paradox in the story. the reason Samus is there is because of them but at the same time, they didn't bring all that stuff to build their base with on GFS Tyr which is too small to do it on its own.

Adding portals to the controller rooms would ruin a few enemy encounters that actually net you upgrades. As well as it would probably change the game from being a "Remaster" (just upgrading the graphics and controller changes) to being a "Remake" (completely redesigning the game even if its a few areas or small things, such as adding portals where there werent before). As well as some of the portals to the light world from the boss fights arent even that far. The one from the swamp (forgot its name) is literally like 2 rooms over for the portal and one from from where the actual boss fight was (i could be wrong its been awhile since i played)

I always find it hard when choosing my favorite Metroid game. All bar the one we do not speak of, I have really enjoyed. Metroid Prime 2 was hard to get into, but I'm glad I stuck with, because it was really amazing in its on right. If they do a remaster of it next year I'll be supporting it day one. I've replayed the first remaster and unlocked all the artwork and soundtrack. I still play through it even after getting everything I can from it, its just that good and I know MP2 deserves the same kind of attention from me as well. I'm looking forward to 2024 and made sure to put money in the savings account for the new switch, MP4 and the hopefully the remaster of MP2 and MP3.

How about collecting items throughout the game like the poes underground in Tear of the Kingdom where as you progress through the game you can trade them in or buy or install them into a device or mechanism where u can SAVE game in a state or make a transport/teleport device where u can warp to whenever u feel like u want to take a break from the game and continue later. You can have different save states too. Upon future replays you can choose to collect or not collect these items as you wish. These items can also allow for acquiring other things as well.

the best part of that game were the bosses. it felt tedious going back and forth between light and dark. apparently it was extremely underfunded and retro had alot more ideas that should have been implemented. the dark world wasnt supposed to be so drab

I would say I look back on MP2 most fondly out of the whole series! My main issue with it was the complete lack of connection between the dark and light worlds. They advertised you'd be able to manipulate things in each world that would affect the other, but it was pretty mundane what was actually done. The Dark Visor was the biggest let down, I thought it would allow you to peer into Dark Aether from Light Aether, and then directly influence things between each world. Ultimately it was just a reskin of the X-ray visor...

I greatly enjoyed MP2, possibly more than the first, I can see why some didn’t, mainly the lack of vibrancy in the different environments but that’s not to say the game wasn’t a graphical masterpiece, because it sure was, players must understand that this wasn’t Tallon 4, but I liked the spider like ing creatures and I feel like the boss battles were better especially when you consider 3 confrontations with dark samus, and what about the story? Prime 2 had more going on, it was how many factions? Samus, Dark Samus, the Ing, the chozo like beings(I forget their names) and a slight bit of the Space Marines, all in one. Once I got in I was determined to finish and was greatly satisfied when I beat it way back then. I hope to see it Remastered!

I think the majority just couldn't handle the bleak atmosphere and overall increase in difficulty (two whole maps, beam ammo, enemies being more complex and hitting harder, more spread out save points, dark aethers toxic air). My story honestly mirrors the majority. Never making it 3 hours into prime 2 and dropping it because all the metroid youtubers said prime 1 is better. I saw a new metroid fan play prime 2, he appreciated the difficulty and extra complexity and it made me give the game a second chance. It became my favorite of the trilogy. I don't have it memorized as well as I have Prime 1 but I still love exploring Aether. Retro specifically made the best handled power up in the franchise. Spoilers for those who haven't played. The Light Suit being the culmination of your struggle through Dark Aether while making you immune to the hostile planets atmosphere. Its so rewarding and cathartic. Probably the best victory lap in the franchise in my opinion.

Prime 2 was my first ever Metroid game, and is still my favorite of the Prime games. If they remaster or remake Prime 2, they should to do what they did for Prime 1. I don't mean just give it a graphical facelift, that would be awesome, but they shouldn't touch much structurally. Prime 1 has problems, but they didn't change any of them. It's the same experience from the Gamecube, but with better graphics and new controls. This is what Prime 2 and 3 remasters should be as well. The only thing I would change in Prime 2 is to keep the difficulty changes of the Boost and Spider Guardians from Prime Trilogy.

My definate favorite Metroid. The paralel dark world adds a lot more playtime, which is a great plus. i agree that its challenging to come up with areas that are not the usual bunch. Agon wastes imo had much wasted potential. The music was not good enogh & as a sandworld, there were so many things they coulda done . . . like with Maridia, where sinking into sand gets you to secret places & could act as shortcuts. Thats my only complaint though. The other worlds are superb with great music. i have an idea on how to incorporate ammo: How about you have a general resource system (like aeon in dread). That would be "energy". Everything except for opening doors would be fueled by energy. You just would have to manage that energy supply

I'm playing trilogy on Primehack, and I have 1 question... How did you get the game to look that good? I mainly am talking about the added bloom, and sharper textures, like on the arm cannon. I really noticed it on the light beam cannon. The starting area you showed at the end with the Luminoth violet door, with all the red weeds, also looked touched up graphically.

Nice Video. Prime 1 is one of my favorite games and I couldn't wait to get Prime 2 at launch. After playing it though, I didn't feel compelled to keep going. I really didn't like the light/dark mechanic at all. It always seems like a lazy way for developers to double the size of a game with little effort. I went back and 100% it a few years later and really enjoyed it. But I've never had a desire to go back and play it again.

The only thing I can say for MP2 is that the levels felt a bit empty when it came to the environment immersion. And the same monsters just keep spawning when you keep passing through the same area back and forth. I don't care much for a teleportation device because after you kill the boss, you would get an update that would allow you to access something as you backtrack into the light world. Backtracking also works as a reminder to where the things you want to collect are. Plus, I like the exploration aspect of the game. The only issue I have is that the backtracking, for the most part, is over the same area, and it does get a bit boring. If MP2 was more of an open world, it would be better to take different paths to get to the same area. Other than that, I love MP2.

Prime 2 is not the black sheep. thats prime 3 it also has things in common with prime 1 prime 3 is the big game changer each game has its own pirates backtracking is extremely fun? HOW? speedboost, spiderball, power bomb and grapple boss all suck and the first three did too much damage it does have a hint system, its just not good, otherwise it would be handholding quick travel via more light beams

I think a big reason people don't appreciate Prime 2 as much is that a lot of Prime 1's appeal was newness. Prime 2 is my favorite in the Prime series. It's the closest to duplicating the dread of the original NES Metroid. One of my friends never finished it because it gave him anxiety. It's a great game and wholly underappreciated in my view.

That's the third comment or so that I've noticed from people talking about how they didn't like the ammo system. I could manage it, but yeah I never felt it was really needed to have either way, like I didn't feel in danger of running out of ammo at any time so why need ammo? It was an odd thing.

Speaking of minor things. Pro players know that you don't need to return the energies to the Agon Waste or Torvus Bog temples! The only one that matters is the Sanctuary Fortress energy because it triggers the last part of the game where you collect the Light Suit and search for the Dark Sky Temple keys.
@biochemRhapsody
@biochemRhapsody 11 ай бұрын
Re: backtracking.The Sky Temple keys in MP2 are bad and worse than the MP1 artifacts in two ways. First, all the keys are in Ing Caches, so collecting them all follow the same procedure - go to the dark world, find the cache, shoot it, done. Compare that to collecting the artifacts in MP1 - each artifact had different requirements to collect, and a different puzzle to complete. Second, in in MP1, you can collect most of the artifacts while you're doing other things; Newborn is the only one that you must wait for. Even then it's a pretty short trip from the Omega Pirate. While in MP2, only 3 keys can be collected without the light suit (I know one or two can be gotten via high energy, but still), meaning that most of the keys and therefore most of the backtracking can only be done at the very end of the game! It kills the pacing - What should have happened is you get the light suit, grab the few upgrades locked behind the light pillars, get the last key, and then you're off to the Emperor. But instead you have to run all over Aether and visit every corner of the map and do the same thing 6 or 7 times to get each key. It's a slog.

Metroid Prime 2 is the best of the series, in my opinion. The levels are more interesting, the music is great, and it’s a bigger challenge. Maybe that’s why I love MP2 more than the average Metroid fan.

One gameplay "fix" I would like to see is giving us the ability to rapid fire missiles like we were able to do in Prime 1, just to make them a little more useful and more fun to play with. But they should also allow us to be able to do that regardless of what beam you're using, unlike Prime 1 and the OG Prime 2. As for "Portal at the Dark Energy Control Unit" part, those should be one-way portals only. If there is a portal in the light world, that would be cheating. Yet I wonder if they are going to keep the novelty multiplayer mode it had? If so are they going to give it the simple remastered treatment, or power it up for online play? Who knows... I expect the hard mode to be on par with Prime 1 Remasters hard mode; brutal, a real challenge.

Thanks for the comment. I agree that it would be best (if they did it) to make it a one way portal from the Dark World area only, so you just appear in the light world from a burst of light with no way back from that area you appear in. Good suggestion.

Unpopular opinion: Metroid Prime 2 was imo the best Metroid game with both Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1 very close on a 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Don't get me wrong, I love this franchise and especially these 3 games can be considered as some of the best games of all time. But MP2 did one thing the best of all the Metroid Games: ATMOSPHERE. I'm a huge fan of great atmosphere in games and MP2 absolutely nailed it. From the creepy "Aliens" like opening with all the dead space marines all the way to the climatic 3rd battle against Dark Samus while the dark dimension was about to collapse.. The atmosphere was of the charts. You absolutely dreaded to enter the dark dimension and not only because of the great and creepy atmosphere, but because said atmosphere could actually kill you! So it started to invoke the feeling of dread and MP2 at some points almost played and felt like a Sci Fi horror game. Truly a stroke of genius by the developers (although some critics and fans hated the dark dimension) But every part of it was done to perfection.. The eerie music, extremely though enemies at certain points and the constant danger adding to the horror feel of the game. And Light Aether wasn't devoid of great atmosphere either btw. Especially Torvus Bog and Sanctuary Fortress were beautiful and extremely wel made designwise. Imo its one of the best games ever made and sadly criminally underrated.

I respect Echoes for what it was trying to do but I found traversing the many light to dark areas and the inhospitable environments therein tedious and depressing. It took me three attempts to finally finish it and it ended up being a slog as there was always this nagging feeling that had stopped me halfway that I wasn't really enjoying what I was doing ... The game had everything going for it - The visuals were a step up, the music was fantastic and the atmosphere was incredible. But when you have a large portion of that game with an atmosphere that is so dark and dreary it's not something that I wanted to go back to and I actively tried to avoid it as it just wasn't fun to play - I never had such a problem playing Prime or Corruption.
