An open world Metroid game would be incredible. Seeing how a game series like Destiny contains a vast array of planets to explore. Curious if the Destiny dev team were inspired by Metroid as well. Can only dream. But Prime 4, no telling what kind of game it will be Retro Studios definitely know the series by heart. Bummer about the burnout they experienced with the series. But getting a chance to explore other series, definitely ideal to experiment, and come up with fresh ideas.

Absolutely wild to learn that nobody writing about Samus actually knew what a bounty hunter is. Still, looks like they're coming around on the concept - the intro to Dread has Samus picking up her mission from a bounty network and Adam warning her that the pay is too low for the danger, implying that she at least sometimes DOES work to pay the bills.

I think Dread's opening characterizes Samus *extremely* well, without having her say a single piece of dialogue. Adam directly tells her, "The pay for the mission is way too low for how high risk it is." Samus just looks up a little bit to address Adam, as if saying, "Yeah? So?" She takes on missions that she believes only *Samus Aran* can complete; missions that are often threats to intergalactic peace and stability, or where the most amount of people will be endangered. This is also why Metroid Prime 2 has my favorite story in the entire Metroid franchise. What starts as a search and rescue operation quickly changes shape into Samus becoming the *one woman avatar of war* for the Luminoth, ending what was a centuries long conflict between the Ing and the Luminoth in the span of an AFTERNOON. And after saving the last remnants of this alien race BY HERSELF, what does Samus do? Casually wave and walk away, like it wasn't a big deal. What a goddamn badass.

She chooses her own path and that just happens to be the way of a bounty hunter And yes, she does indeedly humor up price money during a serious situation. An important character is about to be assassinated, Samus arrives on the scene, says she'll handle it for X amount of money, to which Adam (yes, the actual Mr Malkovich) replies with it being way more than what they'd usually pay for such an operation & that the Galactic Federation can handle the situation on their own. But Samus has already taken care of things and proceeds to further make a joke by going "Too late, I've already finished the mission". But she is by no means cruel, the reason she helped in the first place was because she wants to protect people. Pretty neat how dread ties the two ideas of "having a heart of gold" and "bounty hunter" together in the first cutscene with Adam. The danger outweighed the reward, but that wasn't her mindset. She wanted to eliminate the threat before it could harm anyone else, even if that meant her life.

To expand more on the "bounty hunter" thing, Samus has always been known as a "space hunter" in Japan (which is basically a space cop), but for whatever reason, has always been translated by Nintendo of America to bounty hunter, despite the two being entirely separate things. This has led to a _big_ misunderstanding about Samus' character in the English-speaking world.
@xdragoonzero02 жыл бұрын
I always thought that If they had just translated it as 'mercenary' it would be less inaccurate, if more vague. Edit: Specifically as reference to her actual source of income. It's in the same sense that JRPG and D&d characters are also both often called "Adventurers" doing the right thing, but they both also go around doing a bunch of shit for money, but they don't necessarily hunt bounties.

There's a very good reason Nintendo of America's translators turned her into a bounty hunter: it sounded cool. To Elaborate on the Bounty Hunter title: While she still has the title, even in more recent games, Prime 3 re-worked it somewhat, which was that these vigilante soldiers were "Hunters" and when they were on a mission, the missio nwas referred to as a "Bounty", so in a round-about manner, the title is still applicable in-universe. Samus also has been shown, in both Dread and the manga, to be doing these missions for the funds she does require, though even Dread points out that doing "the right thing" outweighs any monetary gain she would get from it.

Probably Nintendo now knows what bounty hunting is. The intro of Dread makes it clear that the mission on ZDR has a bounty. Additionally, that Samus is an altruistic mother is also clear since even thou the bounty's reward is too low for the risk, she took it anyways. It wasn't about the reward but protecting the galaxy from the threat of the X Parasite.

I'm losing it at the people from Nintendo HQ calling Samus a bounty hunter without having the clear idea of what does that mean it was like bounty = space hunter = adventurer yup, that sounds right to me, she's just chilling in space looking for adventure, it's so weird it would be something like calling Lara Croft a tomb raider but consider her a pet groomer, IDK I think it's funny and they were discussing it for days man.

14:58, thats not true, Metroid Prime was ALWAYS intended to be first person by both Nintendo and Retro, its a false fact that needs to die already after 20 years. The game was in 3rd person only in the very beginning just to get data streaming working and then moved back to first person once that was done. This was confirmed recently in a interview with the lead technical engineer Jack Matthews on the channel KIWI TALKZ. Its also another false information that Miyamoto alone had the idea to make it first-person. Iwata, Tanabe, Miyamoto and others visited Retro at one point and all suggested making a first-person Metroid game from the very beginning, it wasn't all Miyamotos idea as everybody keeps saying.

One of these days you guys have to talk about the "Metroid 1.5" pitch that Retro proposed to Nintendo back then, AKA the original concept for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. That whole "Mad A.I" idea of the Mother, the Child, the Killer and the Martyr and how each personality changed the gameplay was very interesting.

@@meta9492 Metroid fans aren't going to like to hear this, but story-wise, that's essentially Melissa Bergman in Other M. She changes her personality to manipulate Samus throughout the game, starting off as a frightened damsel in distress ("the Child") to becoming a cold automaton trying to destroy everything ("the Killer") because she felt betrayed by her creator ("the Martyr"). As a fan of the Metroid Prime series, I loved this video. The question I would have liked answered is, "Why didn't Metroid Prime 3 Corruption have a multiplayer mode like it's predecessor?" I mean, they introduced 3 new characters that could have been playable and Metroid Prime Hunters showed that they could make a multiplayer that isn't just Samus Free-for-All. Mix that with the controls from Metroid Prime 2 Echoes (which gets translated into Wiimote controls) and they could have had a fun multiplayer. Maybe there's a big story behind it or maybe they never even considered it, but it's always nagged at me why there wasn't a multiplayer in the third game.
@DJIVision2 жыл бұрын
Retro spent about 25% of its development resources on the multiplayer for MP2, and it wasn't super popular. So probably they decided to use 100% of resources on the single player for MP3.
