These were both area themes. Many themes of Metroid Prime can be described as "space lo-fi beats". There's music for different situations, but during the in-betweens and when you're backtracking you get to hear some of the best music in the series. This got a remaster last year with the same great soundtrack but now with gorgeous visuals that runs flawlessly on the Switch.

@@MemoryTAS The GameCube was pretty powerful at the time. That was back when Nintendo really tried to go in on graphical fidelity alongside making great games. It's especially apparent when you compare it to PS2 games. The area the first one plays is called Phendrana Drifts and is such a wonderful place to chill with its track. The "drifts" are referring to snow drifts, so imagine a big wintery area to explore.

They’re typically large piles of snow built up against a wall or obstacle by the wind. They usually form in snowstorms where the wind causes the snow to drift around and settle into large piles all over the place.

Phendrana Drifts plays in an area with cliffs but mostly just covered in snow. All I see in my head when I hear the song is the light snowfall that's always falling in the zone, it very chill. Crashed Frigate Orpheon plays while exploring a space ship that crashed onto the planet and is now completely submerged in water. So it's basically you, in your suit of armor, slowly going through the submerged research ship, powering the doors and systems back up so you can progress. They do fit together a lot, thank you for reacting to these, this is one of my favorite games of all time :)

Nature settings are actually a big part of the Metroid series in general. They are often pitted against the industrial areas where Samus's mortal enemies, the Space Pirates, are exploiting the lands of whichever planet you're on. The Phendrana Drifts theme plays in the pristine areas of Phendrana, a snowy mountain-top zone, contrasting with the more industrial sounds of the Pirate research base in the same area. Frigate Orpheon is a Pirate spaceship that crashed underwater, which is being reclaimed by nature.
@ChronosTachyon
@ChronosTachyon 5 ай бұрын
Worth noting that "natural" does not mean "harmless" in Metroid. Phendrana contains many vicious predators, for instance, and they defend their territory aggressively. But exploring an area with baby sheegoths trying to eat you is much more relaxing than fighting swarms of flying Space Pirates with laser guns and jetpacks.

To go a little more into detail about crashed frigate, the opening area is the space ship, Frigate Orpheon and at the end of the opening it falls to the planet. Much later in the game, you find that it crashed into some body of water and explore it. A lot of the electronic systems barely function, debris is everywhere, and nature has sorta started to move in like a real life shipwreck. Metroid in general has a lot more nature areas than totally mechanical. The series started out with predominantly caves and that has sorta continued throughout its lifespan. A lot of the time, technology is interwoven with natural elements.

Metroid is an action adventure series with the focus on adventure moreso. The have combat but exploring and puzzles are at the forefront. The prime games are 3d first person games, but metroid proper are 2d platformers. Prime games are far more intimate than most first person shooters, and it's really you against the environment rather than the space pirates or metroids or what have you. We got ice level and water level here and most games showcase the metroid area with its music.

It's funny getting this shortly after Donkey Kong Country, both these series basically wrote the book on ambient songwriting in video games! Chip Tanaka, when first composing the original Metroid on NES, likened the soundtrack to a living organism, and I think the rest of the series embodies that perfectly. Take these songs, its as if the world itself is breathing in both songs. They contribute a lot to why Metroid Prime is still to this day my favorite game of all time, and I'm stoked to see one of my favorite songs from it here on this channel! :)

(No spoilers!) I'm sure someone has already explained the gameplay to you so far, but in case they haven't, Metroid Prime is...best described as a "first-person exploration-focused puzzle-platformer shooter". You play as everyone's favorite intergalactic space-bounty hunter exploring the surface and depths of (in this game) the planet Tallon IV. Generally the gameplay is very "person vs. environment" as the wildlife on this planet can be really hostile, but space pirates have set up camp in multiple spots of the world so it is "person vs. evil dudes" at some points as well. There can be a lot of action at points but it's more calming and exploration-y than it is combat focused. The gameplay consists of a lot of "doors and keys", with the keys being upgrades to your arsenal that help you explore more of the world that were previously inaccessible without later upgrades, as you traverse the usually pretty pretty world. As an example, you need to get missiles to blow up a rock to reveal a door behind it, where you then see a door on the other side of a lake. But your spacesuit is too heavy to swim and you can't get to the other door cause there's a cliff at the foot of the door and you can't junp uo to it, so you just kind of trudge across the bottom of the lake, where you find another door. Going through this door atbthe bottom of the lake, you fight a boss, and get the grappling hook upgrade, which you can use to cross the lake and get to that door you couldn't reach before. Metroid Prime, (and Metroid as a whole honestly,) is considered "one of the GOATS" in Nintendo's already extremely high quality catalogue. You said you got a Switch recently, yeah? It might be worth picking up. It's one of those "must play" video games for a lot of people. ~~even if i personally like prime 2 and 3 a lot more~~

Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games, and on top of that Metroid as a whole is one of my favorite video game series. The environmental design and gameplay is always on point (except for Federation Force and Other M, we don’t talk about those ones). Normally Metroid games are side scrollers scored with very atmospheric music meant to make you feel alone, no matter how scenic and beautiful an area is, while you traverse through nature, caves, ruins, and the occasional crashed ship. No dialogue included as you explore these planets and fight through wildlife. In the Metroid Prime trilogy, you get to explore 3D environments in first person. The gameplay changes, but the items are (mostly) the same and you’re still left to wander through these very lived-in planets that often change dynamically as you progress.

The frigate is indeed an underwater biome. It is a space frigate that acted as the game's tutorial and eventually crash landed on the planet it was orbiting. The planet being the main setting for the game. About 2/3rds through the game you find the frigate now destroyed from its crash landing in a rain forest biome sinking into a large lake. The lake and the endless rain caused the ship's interior to flood. Hence why the music has a mix of piano aquatic vibes but with the electronic chimes, beeps, and hums mixed in.

The return! Going from Meta Ridley's boss theme to the (literally) chill Phendrana Drifts is an interesting shift. The Crashed Frigate double feature is definitely appreciated! If you're looking for other aquatic themes both area themes for Sector 4 in Metroid Fusion work very well but the underwater theme is fantastic. Sector 4 in Fusion is an aquatic environment on a space station to study aquatic organisms. The top half is more mechanical while the underwater area is basically in a coral reef and contains one of my favorite water area themes. Maridia from Super Metroid also has two unique aquatic area themes and are on the chill side of things. Side note, if you want to stay in Metroid Prime's soundtrack but listen to a real gnarly song, look for the boss theme against Metroid Prime's Spider form.

Metroid Prime is one of my favorite OSTs of all time. It is VERY good at capturing the vibe of being isolated in a hostile and unfamiliar world. Samus is a badass and she's incredibly capable, but the area is still dangerous. The music is always lovely but eerie and distant. Alien and beyond the reach of help from anyone else. You are on your own, and the environment is against you. Mystery is the biggest vibe you should pick up on in any Metroid environmental track. Mystery and Isolation. This area is incredibly memorable as you're making your way toward the Space Pirate base. I won't spoil any surprises that happen there, but it is BEST played on the original Game Cube. The remasters are fine, but they're actually inferior experiences as the Switch can't replicate the lighting qualities of the original, and VERY strange decisions were made to stop Speed Runners that hurt the experience of a normal player, making it harder to progress. The Game Cube was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ahead of its time. It's almost today a more powerful system than the Switch, and it was one of the first systems to feature a lot of standard features now in consoles. Metroid and Castlevania are the keystone games of exploration adventures that define what we call Metroidvanias. Some Metroids are 2D, but Prime is 3D. The defining feature of this style of game is that you explore until you hit an obstacle you cannot pass and then return to that obstacle when you have acquired new abilities through exploration. It might be 5 minutes or 20 hours before you return to that spot. As you power up, your ability to explore further expands.

A lot of the game is exploring and puzzle solving with first person shooter combat as you go. When you initially go to the Frigate crash site you have to submerge into the flooded interior of the ship. You reach an impasse pretty early on because even the double-jump you unlocked isn't high enough to continue while the water is hindering you. Eventually you reroute to a different area and unlock the Gravity Suit which allows you to jump normally in water. So now you can return to the Frigate and make it over the barrier from before. You open up into a large, entirely-flooded chamber. There are scattered bits of debris suspended throughout the water that allow you to ascend, but they're spaced out enough that a mistake could send you back to the bottom. And to make matters worse there are armored, floating creatures that can't be attacked until you get close enough that they open their mouth and start sucking you to the edge of the platform. All this to say: You will spend a while in this area timing out double jumps and hanging in the water, hoping you don't accidentally sink back down to the bottom. I feel like the song captures not just an aquatic vibe but also this sense of being suspended while you sort of float your way thru the area.

This game is super chill to explore, yet an absolute nightmare to 100%. If only due to certain jumps that were made easier in the re-release. I'd recommend it if you're into exploratory 1st person shooters. EDIT: The Metroid series is kinda like the Black Sheep of Nintendo's IPs. Most of their collection is bright, colorful, and family friendly. Then you look to the side and see Metroid. A space fantasy centering around a lone bounty hunter, often crash landed on an alien planet, arming herself with the local technology and fighting against Space Pirates and the Something Worse that they failed to control. Usually. For Metroid Prime, there was definitely a theme of Nature vs Industry. With one culture trying to find that balance, and another not even caring. It's mostly in and as the background.

Metroid Prime 1is alright to 100%, though a handful of hidde powerups do practically require a guide to find. Prime 2 and 3 are far worse to 100%, IMO. 100% is kinda ridiculous though. Metroid Prime trilogy has a unique soundtrack. There's a lot techno, alien, futuristic scifi soundtrack. There's a lot mechanical and artificial and nature, and a lot of fusion of both. In fact, a part of the first game is about the harmony between the alien civilization with its spiritual technology and the nature of their planet, and how something alien to both, destroyed and corrupted that harmony, which lead to the decay of the planet's ecosystem and the collapse of their civilization. This is why you'll hear a lot of natural settings. But this isn't always the case, and my favorite track, that goes on the complete opposite, is Sanctuary Fortress from Prime 2, which is the bastion of technology and war... nothing is natural here, everything is mechanical and it is revered as the pinacle of this other civilization. Do enjoy Prime, there's nothing like its soundtrack anywhere else.

For the most part, you explored planets in Metroid games with a variety of ecosystems. The sci-fi; tech aspect is there but it’s usually interwoven with natural environments. One thing both of these songs really capture is the isolation feeling of Metroid. It’s just you as Samus, completely alone and isolated exploring dangerous environments. The feeling of isolation is something a lot of fans love about the series and some newer games have gone away from it a bit. The storyline is mostly environmental but still interesting.

Metroid is a very atmospheric series in general. A lot of the music evokes emotions similar to being alone, in solitude, isolation, because the games tend to be about Samus exploring a planet, alone. They do take place outside far more often than inside, with the Frigate Orpheon being a crashed spaceship from the prologue of the game that is half submerged underwater. Many of the areas of Metroid Prime and other Metroid games are outdoors and evoke different emotions based on the environments of those areas, with the more techy, laboratory areas having music that would give off that futuristic sort of emotion.

The game is very atmosoheric and intense, from Phendrana's snowy peaks to toxic fungal ruins reclaimed... and not a single musical piece that feels out of place. I played this for the first time in 14 years just recently and i could not put it down.

This is a curious surprise, most often when hearing Phendrana Drifts it gets paired with Phendrana Depths. It fits rather nicely with the Frigate tho, love this OST.

Metroid is one series where you really wont be getting much dialogue at all. Its one of its strengths.

The Metroid series always delivers when it come to atmosphere. You played Nier, FF7, FF9, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania SoTn & you're about to play FF6... I've been blessed with a good bingo card. You've checked a lot of games I was hoping you would "BUT!" I would've replaced Castlevania with Super Metroid. If you want to experience the grand father of the Metroid(vania)... which should be Metroid-like formula really since Castlevania copied Metroid lol... Super Metroid is the way to go, it easily got one of the most unique and organic/atmospheric OST there is.

another thing to note is that the game metroid prime really went all in on immersion, the entire game is from the perspective of inside samus's helmet, to the point that if you look at glowing places her eyes reflect back into the camera on the inside of the visor you look through,

Listening to this again, and it's kind of ironic you say at 13:43 that it sounds like Aquatic Ambience, since Kenji Yamamoto did the arrangements for Donkey Kong Country Returns, so the games are _kind of_ connected, at least musically. =D

Metroid 1-5 are the 2D sidescroller games. The Metroid Prime series are actually first person, so it's a very immersive experience and the game uses that to it's advantage a lot with the music and atmosphere.

You are not swimming in the Aquatic Area. Samus (the main character of Metroid) wears a big heavy suit of powered armor and so predictably sinks. Her suit just has filters which allow her to breath which makes this so it is less of a problem than you may imagine. This does however result in a scenario in which you are actually walking and jumping along the sea floor rather than swimming. Samus can do almost everything she can normally do in this state. Water just resists her movements making her slower, among other things.

A lot of the Metroid music, in general, tends to lean more towards the feeling of being on another planet or in space. You're supposed to have that feeling of mystery because you're going into the unknown. The music changes to a more energetic one when conflict comes, be it a fight against dangerous wildlife, or the Space Pirates (which the frigate Orpheon belonged to), to boss fights. The music was JUST as important as the environment when they were making the games, and it shows the love and passion they put into it. Edit: Forgot to mention that the Frigate Orpheon was a space frigate that crashed onto an alien planet and was flooded, hence the technological sound and the underwater vibe. And you walk through the flooded ship, not swim. I highly recommend the Metroid series if you ever want to give the games a try. But if you want to hear an amazing track from the Metroid series, I recommend Metroid Prime 2 Echoes main theme.

Metroid Prime is a 3D Metroidvania game, and the greater part of the game involves exploring an alien planet (Tallon IV). The entries of the soundtrack you hear most of are ambient tracks that match each location. Like these two. Phendrana is an isolated land filled with snowy drifts and ice caverns. And Crashed Frigate Orpheon is the claustrophobic, submerged ruin of an orbital space station.

To give at least some context/perspective about Metroid Prime: It is a First Person Adventure. It has strong First Person Shooter elements, but those are just a tool for the actual exploration and navigation of the location. The Prime series is considered one of the best translations into 3D graphics of all time - and Super Metroid was/is one of the highest rated games of all time. Every Metroid Prime game essentially revolves around "You're alone on this alien planet. Find out what happened and learn about anything by scanning it. Also, find upgrades to progress". At times, it even feels like a full blown horror game, as the immersion level generally is quite high in this series and it has some really spooky parts. It's a game you could complete without learning *anything* about its story/lore, since you have to find the pieces yourself (Most are in plain sight, some are hidden).

Btw, the composer, Kenji Yamamoto, is not to be confused with the Dragon Ball Z composer of the same name (the latter who, ironically enough, was successfully accused of plagiarism).

3 month old video, but as someone who just played Metroid Prime for the first time Meta Ridley isn’t really the main boss, he is just the cyborg version of a fan favorite reoccurring boss. He is the penultimate boss however. Uh, saying the name of the actual main boss is kinda a spoiler though since it is a big mic drop… so I won’t say it in case you ever play Metroid Prime. Unless ofc someone else in the comments spoiled it.

Love your videos. For your Aquatic VGM Vibes Video i would also recommend you to listen to - "Metroid - Lower Brinstar" first - and then listen to "Metroid Prime 2 - Torvus Catacombs" That's because the Torvus Catacoms theme is Metroid Primes 2s "aquatic theme" AND it is a remix of the Lower Brinstar theme (which is an underground theme) It's a really nice example to hear what changes the vibe of a Theme.

Ironically, most of Metriod is out doors exploration. In Metriod Prime, the game thays place on an alien planet that is divided into zones, like lava area, ice area, ect. So most of the music is more catered to the zone your in and not so much what's going on in the game. So the drifts is a frozen mountainous windy landscape so they choose that for the theme. Also gameplay wise, probably 95% of it is just Samus wandering this alien world and she also never talks through out the game so you don't get these long dramatic scenes that needs music to fit that type of narrative. Not saying there isn't that, but it's delegated only to boss fights and escape sequences.
