It reminds me of early prerendered cutscenes. Moreso the PS360 and Wii era ones. Like seeing the scene of Ridley in the Frigate is a lot like seeing Mother Brain's fight in the beginning cutscene of Other M. I think its a great fit for Metroid considering they couldn't go for a more realistic one, as its a good mix of realism and maybe Zero Mission's comic book aesthetic. That said, its a bit too dark in places, like the lighting casts too dark a shadowed contrast. Its a minor thing, and more a problem with all graphics engines nowadays it seems. it's more a pet peeve of mine, so not a big issue.

@GBDupree Жыл бұрын
I love Prime 2, so I really want it to get remastered and not just ported. However, I do think if they do remaster it, they should be allowed to change up some things. While I love the environments of 2, I find that Agon Wastes (the first area besides the "hub") is a bit too drab and plain, and I think the game isn't as focused on atmospheric touches like the first. The First Prime really pulls you into the world more to me with environmental detail and interactions, though 2 is no slouch either. Agon Wastes is neat as this desert like environment, but it doesn't really have enough of a visual identity compared to the rest, especially as the Dark versions of every area feel so similar, and even the hub area (whatever its called) can be confused as the same area. As the first major area it doesn't give a great first impression to the game. Though they better keep Torvus Bog as beautiful as it was before and not botch it, I know rain tends to be hardware intensive, so most games don't do heavy rain anymore. I also hope they actually give you a chance to collect the Temple keys ahead of time instead of locking it until the very end. As its even worse than Prime 1 (which has a lot that can be collected earlier, and even some that can be done with some speedrun tricks earlier as well). As someone who actually likes the key hunting to some extent, even I can't really justify Prime 2's key hunt.

Regarding that stalactite you're supposed to destroy with a missile: You're not supposed to hit it from that far down. You're supposed to climb up the room and then grapple over to a ledge, where the auto-lock will immediately target it for you to blow up with a missile. It'll then fall and open up a path to the missile expansion. I suppose if you're speed running or don't want to wait for the grappling hook then you might need to find another way to destroy it from below, but that's the intended method at least. Love all your videos!

@LckeStudios Жыл бұрын
i just dont really get it. there were never really times where spamming normal shots was a good idea, at least not after getting charge beam, which is about 1 hour into the game after planetfall. it presented as a challenge when i could no longer keep some wave beam-weak enemies in perpetual stun, like the wave pirates and security drones. this made me have to do more strafe dancing than usual. i feel like i could deal with chozo ghosts a lot faster with partial charges if i had them too. none of this ruined the game, just made me wish for a toggle.
@PauLtus_B Жыл бұрын
I don't think you could do that on the original GC release but it was already in Echoes. I miss it and the triple shot makes it kinda worse. I appreciate the attempt, especially with the power beam as that one could fire about as quick as you could spam the button but I think the implementation just kinda sucks. I'm the kind of player who tends to go from charge shot to charge shot and now there's the awkward in-betweener which has now tripled since the original. But if you want to fire as quickly as possible and make use of this feature you can't intuitively spam the button but instead need to keep repeatedly keep holding it and release it. I think I understand what they were going for: -You don't have to spam the button as much to shoot quickly. -There's no "interpretation" of your inputs where the game tries to figure out if you intend to rapid fire based on button spamming and then just put the weapon to "rapid fire mode." Like you'll never shoot when you don't press the button and always shoot if you tap it (as the rate of fire allows it.) -You can still get from pressing the button to a full charge shot just as fast (for the power beam at least) so it can't be considered a downgrade in anyway. ...but it just doesn't feel that good. It hasn't impacted my play experience much but it's a pretty odd inclusion and I miss the option to turn it off.

I think the thermal visor was purposefully made to be blurry to emulate footage from actual thermal vision that you sometimes see. But yeah, it ended up just being kind of a nuisance, especially when fighting robotic enemies in the dark. Because they don’t show up on the visor very well because they don’t give heat, and it’s so blurry you can’t make them out, so you switch to combat visor but the lights are off.
@GBDupree Жыл бұрын
I thought it was trying to mimic how the original would've looked on a really old CRT, but even then I think they overdid it. It needs NO motion blur at the very least to be actually usable. And maybe a few other things to make it more pleasant to look at. Its to the point that people are actively trying not to use it, and that makes it harder for people who are playing for the first time to progress properly. And it used to be a cool visor to use just to see how everything looks, but now its not worth it, and that's a hit to the atmosphere of the game.

@GBDupree Жыл бұрын
that's not the point though, the point is that even when aiming directly at that spot it still won't hit properly. Its such a tiny hitbox that the rest of the stalactite will likely block it. It seems intentionally designed so that you can only hit it when using the lock on. This has always been the case so even on Wii where you tend to manually aim at everything you still end up having to lock onto that Stalactite anyways. What Nerrel is asking for would be to make the hitbox more generous so that this game would never require lock on if you didn't want to use it (perhaps as a challenge?). Personally, I can't remember any other points in the game where a hitbox was so tedious, but I do remember those stalactites very much because they always stuck out for that reason.

In the Remaster those colors are gone and its pretty much a bright sunny day. You can see this in the video from 0:25 - 0:29
@Lordbobomb Жыл бұрын
For me my biggest nitpick is that the arm cannon looks more plastic compared to the original. And i also agree that the Chozo ruins look a bit off... It looks and feels too alive rather than the darker looking atmosphere the original has.

The reports about Prime 2/3 Remastered are conflicting; the Grubb rumor suggest a more basic one, whereas the Belmont rumor suggests them trying to match this one, but they'd be outsourced. We'll see if we get either, but the former would be massively deflating.

A missing effect I haven't seen people talk about much is the Jetpack enemies no longer explode when they hit the ground. I don't own a copy yet, but I've seen some people claim the damage isn't there either, so it might be a bug rather then just a missing visual effect?

@mmazurr Жыл бұрын
Take this with a grain of salt because I haven't played the original, only the remaster. The Jetpack Pirates explode but it's not huge. They can damage you if they explode next to you, so you have to dodge out of the way. Idk if this was in the original, but their death animation is different different depending on what you use to kill them(beam type, missiles, etc.) so they don't always spin out of control. It still looks good, coming from someone who doesn't know how it used to be.

There's something about the original game's graphics that just captivate me more than the remake. I think it's a similar to when you see pixel art in action and your imagination fills in the graphics, but instead of pixel art it's low poly models. The remake doesn't capture that. Also the new art direction reminds me of pikmin 3 Everyone else i've talked to said that the remaster is a 100% upgrade to the original, so I know it's just me. Regardless, i bought the game because despite my dissapointment I'm still having a blast.

I'm another one of those five people. I only started playing the Metroid series a bit over a year ago, and I started with Super Metroid. I then decided to get the Prime Trilogy on the Wii U for $20 and I had a great time. So, yeah; I'll be waiting for a bundle (and for a left-handed mode for the gyro aim). Speaking of which, anyone else find it a bit suspicious how close the remaster's release was to the day that the Wii U eshop will be closing? Considering how often Nintendo delisted Wii U games after making Switch remasters, I can't help but suspect that they timed this.

0:35 Something that I feel Other M got right (please don't hurt me!) was the visual style, especially the colors. The bright greens and pinks used on, say, zoomers and rios in that game made it look like "Super Metroid 3D" in ways that Prime and its more earthy color pallet didn't.
@booski1865 Жыл бұрын
Got a couple other things right too, abilities (3D shinespark, screw attack both feel pretty great) and big, scary, fast paced boss battles too. People seem to often only say a thing is either all good or all bad.
@AstralFireIX Жыл бұрын
I can appreciate that, but Nerrel raised the point that Prime's most unique factor in the series is immersiveness, and going with that visual appearance might have been a more faithful translation of the 2D experience but it would have cost something much better

3:59 personally, once I got used to the hybrid controls, I can see their purpose. It’s nice to have the more prime like platforming. I went to the dual stick controls in the end, but I can see me doing a play through in the hybrid controls for a slightly more “authentic” feel

@matthewmuir8884 Жыл бұрын
@@athlon64x29 Honestly, Prime 2 is my least-favourite of the Prime games, but that's not saying much as they're all really good, and each one has different strengths and weaknesses: Prime 1 has the best exploration, Prime 2 has the best puzzle-solving, and Prime 3 has the best combat. I guess you could say that they're each the Triforce of Courage, Wisdom and Power respectively if you'll forgive the use of a Zelda metaphor to describe Metroid Prime.
@TheDeepThinker-sq3iy Жыл бұрын
@@matthewmuir8884 if by "best combat" in prime 3 you mean the most BROKEN combat then yes, yes it is. while I wouldn't say prime 3 is bad by any stretch of means, but it also happens to be my LEAST favorite of the three simply because of how redundantly EASY that game is(and yes, that's including HARD mode). I still enjoy playing it though, but am pretty sure echos holds the record for best combat AND the puzzles. prime 1 might actually be my most favorite of the three as I find it more simpler than the other two, just NARROWLY ranking right above echos(their CLOSE, just that prime 1 barely wins). I love echos too, but I kinda find it a bit redundantly gimmicky, especially all those unskippable cutscenes that you have to sit through each time you go into dark eather, and then again going back. prime 3 is kinda gimmicky as well, but even heavier. hyper mode is the most hilariously BROKEN thing I've ever seen... yea, ok... maybe the dark beam from echos was kinda busted as well, but at least you couldn't use it to completely negate all damage like that... that game still found some wholesome ways to still be difficult, in spite of having an op arsenal.
@matthewmuir8884 Жыл бұрын
@@TheDeepThinker-sq3iy No, I mean best combat. In terms of boss fights, half the boss fights in Prime 1 were good (Meta Ridley, Metroid Prime, etc.), half were boring, and one was immensely unrefined (Omega Pirate). For Prime 2, half its bosses were good (Dark Samus, the other final boss, and the giant robot), while the other half were exercises in frustration (spider ball guardian being the obvious example). Prime 3 was the first one where the boss fights were consistently good across the board. The corrupted bounty hunters were good boss fights, Dark Samus was a great final boss fight, the bosses inside each phazon core were good, the first Ridley fight was great, etc. As for regular combat, I do think that they could've made the phazon weaponry more risk-reward than it was, but, outside of that, it was a lot of fun. Prime 2 had a lot of enemies that were fun to fight against, but there were also some that were just plain annoying (the crocodile-mouthed things near the entrance to the swamp, for example; they weren't difficult, but they were frustrating). As for the ammo, the ammo system was good for exploration, but it meant that, if you ran out of ammo that was good against specific enemies (for instance, light ammo when in dark aether), if there are no objects that can be destroyed instead, you have to use the ammo that is terrible against those enemies in order to resupply. Prime 1 is my favourite as well because I really enjoy exploration. I should point out that my first experience playing these games was playing them back-to-back via Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii U just last year.
