Why Perfect Split, The Reason for Smaller Split Firewood

We get a lot of comments on split size under many of our videos, so we wanted to talk about the reasoning and markets where "Perfect Split" firewood excels.

Thanks for the info Bob. I really like this system. You can tell Japa has put a lot of time and effort into these machines. OWB’s 405 is my dream machine. Hopefully I can grow into using one of these machines one day. I have found a lot of people like the smaller pieces. I’ve sold to several customers that can’t physically handle the larger pieces anymore. Keep up the great work!

Bob great explanation on the perfect split. I too am of the mindset smaller is better, it’s interesting the Japa doesn’t produce a ton of torn scrap wood like my box wedge does which I stopped using because of that. Thanks for sharing.TCT

Tone, you stopped using a box wedge because it made a lot of scrap wood or did it not have an appealing appearance? My observation is that a box wedge sizes wood down nicely but leaves it less eye appealing than other blades and wedges. Size matters, but so does the visual appeal of wood split straight without the extra debris and rough sawn-looking sides created by box wedges and their offspring, perfect splits. Customers who don’t know the difference will probably care less about the rough appearance versus a split that leaves flat edges, but taking a bbq restaurant used to premium “looking” wood to that left rough by a box wedge may, in certain markets, be asking too much. I like the perfect split, it eliminates the resplits and sizes wood to user friendly sizes for all applications from fire pits to pizza ovens, but the appearance/curb appeal is lacking in comparison to other splitters. I liken it to growing pains; those producers doing 100+ cords/ year need as much efficiency as possible, and if that means a product that serves the need with less eye appeal, that’s what it’s going to take to maximize productivity. Happy customers will not care if there is no interruption of service or functionality of wood. But if we are making niche products, we need to pay attention to appearance. Reno

Great info & explanation. For some reason the concept of smaller split firewood is so difficult to understand. I think men + wood + small, triggers a psychological defense mechanism or something. Will Perfect Split ever come to the 365?

Most customers prefer smaller splits. Yes, it's more work (without the perfect split), but it certainly dries faster!

Ohio Joe would call that “value added” or premium wood as the end product is easy to handle and burns really well when dry. Kids and arthritis sufferers can easily move those splits so it’s fun for everyone. Who doesn’t like a nice fire on a fall evening? 😉 Reno
