Actually, Plup activates the extended grab glitch with those aerial grabs. The second time Samus grabs Bowser through his flames at 0:16 is definitely the extended grab range.

If you want the technical answer, it's because the term developed in the early days of game development. As it has pretty much always been, areas that we now call hitboxes would collide with areas we now call hurtboxes, causing damage. Back in the day before circles in video games really existed, everything was a box. This even extends into games with much more updated graphics, like Street Fighter 5 (frametrapped.com/images/banner.png). TL;DR despite being circles, we call them hitboxes because the term was invented back when they actually were boxes and we just still say that.

I don't like the term "Hurtboxes" because it's an ambiguous term (you can't tell if they hurt or get hurt just from the word itself). Melee had a legendarily short schedule, and Sakurai damn near killed himself making this game, lol. I've been modding melee for a few months now and you wouldn't believe the hitbox nonsense I've found... like Link's nair, they accidentally put an "asynchronous timer" function instead of a "terminate collisions" function, which means that link's nair hit box stays out for the entire animation, even after he retracts his leg, instead of lasting about only half like most nairs, lol. Also DK's side B has only one small hitbox that lasts for 1 frame on the tip of his head... And of course I shouldn't need to point out Roy's flat-out missing hitboxes on his dash attack, lol.

It's a Samus super wavedash. To do this you have to drop a bomb, and hit left on the 41st frame and right on the 42nd frame, also you have to release the control stick again, otherwise the dash won't be as long. It's a frame perfect move and requires a lot of practice to pull of consistently.

It's a little-known Samus trick called the extended grapple. I don't remember the exact inputs for it, but for whatever reason, it dramatically increases the length of Samus' grapple beam, and causes it to home in on the enemy, but requires you to press the grab button again when the grapple is actually on the opponent to snatch them. It was patched out of PAL, presumably when they realized it isn't fun in casual play for Samus to be able to grab you through the Great Fox fin.

Travis Vardy you have to hit z, dpad up, dpad down, dpad up, then z again between frames 5 and 29 of the grab animation, and then it's set up. now whenever you grab, that happens. you have to hit a or z when the tip of the grapple is on someone to actually grab them though. also it will home onto to opponent if you hold L
