You’re so knowledgeable! It’s kinda sad on my part how little knowledge I hold in regards to history. Thank you for this educational vid! I’ll have to definitely check out these books eventually. Consider me a new sub! 😄👍

Thank you so much Nins. But don’t be so hard on yourself. It took me many years of reading to know a thing or two about this topic. There’s still so much I don’t know.

I fucking love the passion that comes through of how much you love sharing mythology. I am so glad I found your channel. My only piece of advice is putting links in the bio to each book or the just the names of the book with the authors. Just for convivence lol

Thanks so much! I’m happy you like my channel. I also appreciate the advice. Actually in my more recent videos I have started putting in names of stories, book titles and authors. I should do that with my older vids.

Your channel is very informative. Would you consider doing a book shelf tour video going thru all the mythology books you own? From what I've seen of your videos, it is a very impressive collection!
@joeyraggs3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I might do a vid on that. Not sure. I’ve been collecting these books since 1986. So yeah, I’ve amassed a hefty collection.

I second this. I'm slowly working through all of Joey's videos and planed on asking for this once I reached the final one. I'd LOVE to see a book tour. The longer the better. I'd seriously sit down and watch a 2+ hr one (my poor to buy list would more than double, I'm sure)

Anyone interested in Maya mythology best read is The Maya Cosmos. Great book that references the popohl vuh but also gathers up the Creation myth from other sources ( sculptures, hieroglyphs ) hundreds, and thousands of years before the popohl vuh was created. If you know the Maya creation myth you'll know why they did everything they ever did.

Me realized that all the books say Aztec when in reality they are called Mexica and nobody ever called them Aztecs, that was a mistake of an English writer I think ...
@joeyraggs3 жыл бұрын
According to Bierhorst, the Aztecs consisted of several tribes. The Mexica was the largest. So he does mention them. I guess English speakers prefer Aztecs. I don’t know why. But thanks for letting me know.

Respectfully, the Aztecs were not that relevant in general Mesoamerican history. The Indigenous ppl of Oaxaca & Central mexico are the ones who developed all the agriculture and architecture; when the Aztecs arrived, all the knowledge was already there. It’s a huge misconception but they were only large for ~300 years. Other groups, like the Zapotecs and Purépecha had been around for thousands more years.
@joeyraggs4 жыл бұрын
True. The Aztecs were new to the scene when the Spanish arrived. I think when some books use the title Aztec Mythology, they might really be referring to what the Aztecs took from the older Nahuatl speakers. There’s a few new myths the Aztecs gave us. I believe Huitzilopochtli is a god that isn’t traced back to an older civilization.

joeyraggs that’s very true, honestly never thought of it like that. Also great video!! I apologize if I came off rude first. I’ll be checking more out

Wrong. They were and are extremely relevant. Yes, they were around for only 250 years or so but the impact cannot be overstated. Their empire was dominant unlike any other mesoamerican civilization. Their city was one of the largest in the world at that time. Talk about relevant. I think you mean innovative. And the zapotec and purupecha were not around for thousands of years. The Maya were around for that long. The Olmec are considered the mother civilization and some think they may have eventually became the Maya.
