It was built by almost exclusively Panamanian labor, of which about 30.000 died. Before the US had anything to do with it, the French were at it for years. Completing about 40% of it. The US just finished the project and agreed to pay Panama US 10m plus annual fee of US 250k. This agreement came to an end by US law passed in 1977. Canal zone ceased to exist on October 1, 1979. The canal itself was turned over to the Panamanians on December 31, 1999. Since then Panama has invested US 5.4B in upgrading it, tripling it's capacity. It is called Panama canal, not US canal. The US has no more rights to it than the French have, which means none. Nobody forces you to use it. You are free to sail around South America. It is the sovereign property of Panama and wholly within their national borders. End of story.

Here are some key points: - **Port Management**: Chinese companies manage ports at both ends of the canal, including the **Port of Balboa** on the Pacific side and the **Port of Manzanillo** on the Atlantic side. - **Infrastructure Projects**: China has funded several projects in the region, such as the construction of a **$1.4 billion bridge** spanning the canal and the **Amador Convention Center** on the Pacific side. - **Economic Influence**: Chinese investments and loans have helped finance these projects, which has raised concerns among some U.S. policymakers about China's growing influence in the region. While China does not control the canal itself, its involvement in surrounding infrastructure and economic activities has increased its strategic presence in the area.
