As a Mexican, linguist, and language freak, I appreciate this effort, Andy. I want to say that even official figures speak of those 62 indigenous languages, in reality, there are around 300 languages, give or take. For example, Nahuatl is not really a unified language but a group of closely related languages as intelligibility between distant geographical varieties is not really granted, so that really makes Yucatec Maya the most spoken language. Almost all of the Otomanguean language denominations, mostly recognizable for the Nahua-exonymic endings in -tec (Chinantec, Mazatec, Cuicatec, Mixtec...), are in fact groups of closely related yet unintelligible languages. Although the Mexican Government does recognize indigenous languages as National Languages, there isn't really a true interest in knowing all the real variation of Mexican languages or even guarantee the basic rights of its speakers.

Trivia:During the Galleon Trade, most of the loanwords in Filipino are Mexican Native origin like Nahautl and Maya like Palengke which is Palenque, a Mayan Place 😊😊

Palenque origin is really Spanish. Another words that indeed come from Nahuatl in Phillipines' languages are kamota, from camotl "sweet potato", tivangge from tianquiztli "street market" or sikati from zacatl "forage/grass". A lot of Mexicans are unaware that we used to be the same country, however, ustedes son nuestros carnales del otro lado del Pacífico.

There is also nanay, atsuete and pitaka aswell being loanwords?
@carloswagner36216 ай бұрын
@@juliusnepos6013 atsuete from "achiotl" and pitaka from "petacatl". Nanay is from Spanish "nana" nanny or mom.

Too bad that within the ranks of the Spanish conquerors most soldiers during the conquest of Mexico were actually not Spaniards but Native allies like Tlaxcalans, Totonacs, Zapotecs, Purépechas, Texcocoans, Otomis and several Nahua altepeme like Xochimilco, Chalco, Mixquic and Itzapalapa. That's because, unlike these people (like your neighbour) put it, pre-Columbian America wasn't a "paradise" either and the Mexicas oppressed in many ways other Native groups, among them the aforementioned, who upon the arrival of the Spaniards seized the opportunity to take revenge on the Aztecs. Also, I would bet that this Mexican neighbour that you have is not (fully) Native American. In that case, he is basically denying one of his heritages.
