Dumb comments from Meredith Crowley. The Mexican government reduced undocumented immigrants by 75% in 2023-4, so there is no excuse. 70% of arms enter from the US illegally into Mexico causing thousands of deaths annually. Drug addiction is not significant in Mexico, while it is in the USA, where they have not been able to deal with it as a public health issue. The US has the highest per capita number of prisoners in the world - more than half are minorities.

If somebody is attacking you with a clenched fist.. you are not "threatening" retaliation. What Mexico is is saying is " Please don't attack me or I'll be forced to defend myself in the same matter". Even more so what they are saying is " Hey dudes.. let's not even fight in the first place - because we know beforehand that nobody will win". To quote an old movie " The only winning move is not to play." Seems quite reasonable.

How much is it costing the USA in supporting all the illegal immigrants? How many lives taken by Mexico allowing drugs to flow across our border. I’ll pay more for their goods……if it’s the cost for a secure border so be it.

With Mexico, I see it as possible, just like with China. But Canada? It still wants to be the servant of the United States. In the last decades, every time the United States asked North America to agree with it on something, Mexico opposed it or thought in detail about whether it was worth it or not. On the other hand, Canada always said yes to everything the United States wanted, as if it were afraid of them.

Mexican politicians already weathered 4 years of Trump before. 4 more years will go by quickly and the next administration would likely be more cooperative with the country. The best bet is to weather the storm until he leaves office and then bring business back up afterwards. Mexico and the US are very interlinked. It would be foolish for Mexico to seek support from China who is an ocean away and is dealing with one of the largest housing bubbles in history. China is in no place to make the strategic investments necessary to break up Mexico and US economically.

They got one choice is suck up to Trump or game over, that is 100% reality. Trudeau was quick to do this within seconds of the announcement and Mexico stopped all caravans from reaching the border. As a Canadian (and a proper conservative who's decidedly NOT a fan of our current Prime Minister), I can't say how offended I am at Trump's threats. I know how dependent we are on trade with the US and understand why our political leaders of whatever party need to tread carefully in negotiating with the Orange Bully. But in a personal capacity, I'm firmly resolved to boycott any and all American-made products (and even American-branded ones) for as long as Trump is in office regardless on what ends up being negotiated. I expect civil society here will also rally to that cause to a significant extent. Bullying Americans beware: "America First" may soon come to mean "America Alone" on many, many fronts.

And the USA will just sit on the couch, stuffing their face and doing nothing? 😂😂😂 What fantasy world are you living in? Mexico is not a pushover. This is a problem for both countries, and the USA needs to step up and play its part. Maybe if you allocated just 1% of your war budget to border security, you’d actually have a secure border-instead of wasting money on random wars that have nothing to do with you!

As a Canadian I think we need to bypass the USA and form a trade agreement with Mexico. We have natural gas, oil, intrinsic minerals, wheat and many other vital resources we can trade to them insteadmof the USA. We already trade with China, many South American countries so perhaps we need to start cutting trade with the USA......

Canada as been complacent in getting its broken immigration act together, with people dying in winter trying to get across, and manufacturing fentanyl, etc. The economic and social cost of this from both north and south is far larger than that of any negative effects on the US from tariffs. You cannot have free trade while the other countries cant get their act together, if they are still belligerent, I can see Trump announcing a ban on products entering the US, similar to what Canada did to dairy products, amounting to inflated prices for Canadians.

Why would you ask those questions from someone who doesn't even live in the same continent? Additionally, she might teach economics for whatever valid reason Cambridge might have had to let her teach, but she has no idea of what is really going on. As I said before, she is overseas, obviously whatever comes out from her mouth is not to be trusted. On the other hand, why would Mexico really worry about these tariffs? Does this Professor from Cambridge know about the Virtual Exports/Imports? or do all of you really believe that ALL the imported/exported products cross the border physically? If the answer to this last question is YES, then you got no idea of anything about the international trade between these 2 countries.

why DW is asking professor from UK? why not from Germany?
@caseyalanjones
@caseyalanjones Ай бұрын
It's DW's English-language channel. Dr. Crowley, your professor "from UK" [sic] is an expert in economics who is actually from the US, previously worked as a researcher at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, and is obviously a native English speaker. Since she now lives in the UK, the time zones probably make a live interview easier than with someone actually in the US. I can't see how speaking to someone from Germany would be in any way inherently better, so I don't understand what your complaint is about.

@@eliotness4029 Of course that's not what I'm not saying. DW interviews people from around the world, including from Germany, the UK, and everywhere else. But in this case the story is about US-Mexico economic relations, so I don't get why you seem so dissatisfied to hear from a US economic expert about US economic relations... The host Anja Kueppers-McKinnon is not German either, but who cares? You could try DW Deutsch if you want more German perspectives, but they don't have any complete ban on talking to foreigners either. If you only ever want to hear the opinions of Germans, then it's probably best to just turn off the internet.

They forgot to mention that these tariffs do not align with the renegotiated agreement he led in 2018 🤭. The analyst seems a bit misinformed about the policies allowing a certain percentage of parts to be sourced from outside North America. Trump aims to reduce the trade deficit and bring jobs back to the U.S., but in doing so, Americans are likely to face higher inflation rates, making it increasingly difficult for people in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada.
