Mexico visa-free travel was "bilateral irritant" for Canada-US relations, internal documents show

Canada's Liberal government’s decision to lift the visa requirement for Mexican nationals became a “bilateral irritant” with the Biden administration, as the number of migrants on both sides of the border spiked, newly released documents show.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller reinstated visas for Mexican citizens on Feb. 29, 2024 to slow what he called “exponential growth” in asylum claims straining Canada’s refugee system and provinces’ resources, while also drawing the ire of U.S. officials.
Internal government briefing notes shed new light on Washington’s “concerns regarding abuse” of the visa exemption, and the pressure Ottawa was under to reimpose the requirement.
“Mexican nationals entering Canada… subsequently attempting to enter the U.S. illegally remains a bilateral irritant,” reads the document obtained by Global News through access to information laws.

Nearshoring is opening a lot of doors for Mexicans, especially in cities like Tijuana, Guadalajara, Monterrey. So Highly skilled mexicans are less likely to immigrate nowadays.

For those saying that Mexico would starve without tourism, ​​⁠actually tourism in Mexico has an unspoken negative impact, only few business man benefit from it and most of them are foreign. The hotels are draining basic resources away from neighbouring communities. For instance if you were to be a hotel worker in any touristic destination in Mexico you’ll make minimum wage which is about $15.10 per day, while you are working at your hotel you are seeing all the water being wasted in various things like maintenance of golf courts, pools, beach showers, washing… etc When you get home you don’t have a drop of water so you have to be extremely resourceful when you do so not to waste it. That been said water is just an example, the industry remove people from their homes to build new complexes. Keep an eye to what is happening in Yucatán and the Maya communities and the train they just built that has split the jungle in 2. It is like saying that because you have nestle extracting water in Canada every Canadian is rich which because they must pay them well for that…

I just got done with a class about Mexican-American studies, wasn't sure what to expect when the issue of the border came up. It turns out it's a lot more complicated than just Mexico wanting the border open. Basically, companies in Mexico are unable to find workers if all the Mexicans come here for higher wages than they can afford to pay. And while US laborers are angry about the influx of Mexican labor driving down US wages, Mexican renters and property owners are frustrated with wealthier Americans buying up land and renting apartments in Mexico, which prices them out of the housing market and continues the cycle of driving more Mexicans to go north looking for work.
