Our guests today are Sunshine, Savvy, and Sunya. They are three beautiful women who moved from the USA to Mexico at different times in their lives. After a few years in the Lake Chapala area, they found each other and are now living a great life in San Nicolas Ibarra.
Learn their stories about moving abroad and how living in Mexico is a breath of fresh air compared to their lives in the United States.
They talk about racism in Mexico, whether or not they feel safe as single women, renting challenges, and some common surprises. And the challenges they have had to overcome by moving to Mexico.
And even though learning how to live in a country hasn't been without its challenges, they say they love their lives in the Lake Chapala area and are thriving. They also show us around their new Bed and Breakfast (Soujourner Vista del Lago), which aims to help people come and find a relaxing place while they scout the area.
But one thing I can tell you from this interview before you watch it is that these beautiful women were a delight to listen to. I hope you enjoy it!
Learn more about Soujourner Vista Del Lago here sojournersvist...

One advice with a lot of kindness, respect and humility for you beautiful ladies. I am Mexican, and have traveled across the USA from East to West and North to South. I just wanna first thank you for such nice words and how you express yourselves of Mexico in general. Surely Mexicans are happy to have you in our country and we are glad you chose it to call it home. That’s a compliment and we are deeply thankful. My two advice for you ladies is to always smile. People are gonna smile back to you. As part of our culture across the country we always greet people even if we don’t know them at all. If they pass by our houses we greet them and they always reply back. Secondly, you don’t have to speak Spanish nor speak it perfectly to approach different people and greet them nicely saying “hola, cómo estás?” Then you can switch back to English. If the person you greeted doesn’t know English he will help you taking you to someone who does speak and understands your language. Mexicans love saying “gracias” for everything. And also if you saw people with black skin with African ancestry who clearly speak Mexican Spanish quite well. Do not call them African-Mexican, or if you see a white person who is from Mexico never use the word “whitexican”. We believe that regardless our ethnicities if you were born in Mexico you are Mexican period. We do not like nor wanna promote those prefixes and labels that lead to stereotypes and degrade people as not fully Mexican. We understand Mexico has a diverse population and we are proud of that and embrace diversity but we don’t want to promote as part of our culture those labels and prefixes used in the USA which implicitly teach that white is the norm to be “American” cuz they say “African-American” “Mexica-American, Asian-American even if those people were born in the USA but, they never ever call themselves European-American. So please help us not to bring those habits. We love you all refer to the USA as US, the States, or the United States. the whole Latin community thank you deeply for that cuz we believe there's one single America which is a continent where we all live. it is not a country. That's about it and hopefully you guys have a wonderful life living in Mexico and enjoy your stay.

I agree with everything you said. The only difference is that most Americans have kind of begrudgingly accepted the hyphenated name because those groups like to embrace and emphasize their “non whiteness” which is in vogue now. But most people would prefer the US to be a melting pot. Share your culture but also assimilate and be respectful as should anyone going anywhere out of their country of origin. I truly can’t stand those Americans going to Mexico and demanding the locals speak English. At least make the effort to do as the locals. Mexico is beautiful and people going to live there should try and be an asset to the community like these ladies have done. And just like anyone going anywhere, we bring the good parts to share while blending and assimilating to the local.

I've lived in Mexico for a couple of years and I love it. Ive been stopped by the police twice, but once they realized I'm older, retired, living on a small pension, don't do drugs, rarely drink, don't party and I'm fascinated with the language, culture and art of mexico our interactions are simply greeting one another. She is missed in Albuquerque!!!! Chapala was beautiful when I was there in 1993, my daughter's dad and I loved the food and the people... and not being scared of the police was such a different experience from NC & VA. We settled in Albuquerque after we left Mexico, because out of all the places we visited, Albuquerque was the closest to staying in Mexico. My favorite parts of Mexico were learning where to safely eat from the taxi cab drivers, exploring the ruins with the locals on Sundays, and the beautiful mothers, aunties, and grandmothers of Oaxaca. May you enjoy your journeys!

This is what it should be when you relocate to México. Not all the "Ex-Pats" that buy up communities, gate them and make it so expensive for locals, refuse to learn Spanish and only stick to hanging out with people like themselves. These women are a beautiful example of how cultures learn about each other, accept each other and share each other's ways. I'm curious to know besides the drivers who provide services to them do they have other friends here that are locals?

A black women about the same age as these 3 ladies, once came to get some dental work done, she was single and retired, she did not have any children. So basically she was here by her self. She told me that she decided to purchase a house in Rosarito to live permanently. With her retirement she couldn’t afford the rent or any other expenses in the U.S , including getting her teeth fixed. She seemed happy but at the same depressed because she was here by herself, so she couldn’t share her happiness with a partner. Also it was hard to move around because she had to rely on Taxis and her Spanish wasn’t good at all. I just hope she is doing well and my prayers go out to her! 🙏

This was pre-September 11th, but at the time I resided in Guadalajara, the people throughout the State of Jalisco & the country of México overall embraced me, I visited some of the most fabulous places, I felt safe, and it felt like home. Many people couldn’t believe I was from the United States, but I do have Mexican ancestry (my great-grandma was half Mexican) and I speak Spanish which helped. One of these ladies is right about the freshness of the vegetables. Another american once said: I eat like a donkey here in mexico, and never worry about gaining weight cause most mexican food is free of of pesticides, fertilizers. Most dairy products and eggs are hormone free products

I really enjoyed listening to them and I hope they are getting even happier and meeting more Mexican friends. I wish them the best! I'm from Brazil so my native language is Portuguese and before I took my first trip to the US I spent a long time learning English and it was the best thing I could have done. I was able to meet many more people and make lifelong friendships, and that's how it's been every time I've been to the US. Besides improving the language every time I went I also was able to immerse myself in the culture without needing translations. I did the same thing before visiting countries where Spanish is the official language. I took classes but I also used all resources online I could find to improve my Spanish. I even learned to differentiate the accents of the different regions. Today, traveling through Hispanic America is my favorite type of tourism! Cheers everyone! More friendship and sharing cultures and less divisions and prejudices! Go Kamala!

Ladies, thank you so much for your uplifting video! I am in my 13th year living here and I have seen North of the Border folks come and go. Many were just not a fit from the word go and you could see it right away. They were fearful and negative about the local markets and shopped only at Guadalajara Malls or local NOB specialty stores with high prices. I tried to move into the local Mexican community and eventually became friends with Mexicans. I hope that I see you around Chapala to greet you in person some time. Much of what you said resonates with my experience here. Kudos to the three of you!
