Theres times when the drone cant keep up they explain it episode 1

180 mph is the max according to the show how fast the drones can go but there have been times where they go past that and the drones are still able to catch up. *Like in the danger zone* So the drones are a bit inconsistant but this is set in the future with self driving electric cars being the norm so its likely the range finder/proximity detector technology at the time is very advanced.
