A suggestion, in case I missed your comment on this. Those rigs that are compatible via the DIN cable they sell don't actually NEED the 12vdc power supply (that a couple of uninformed commenter's complain about, assuming it's a "wall wart") as the rig gives the MFJ-939 the needed voltage. If you didn't note this explicitly in the video (or I missed it), viewers need to know this. PS: It also works with the new Yaesu FT-891 with the Yaesu cable adapter. They'll add that soon to their website.

I found the MFJ manual quite lacking (not the first time), and why I'm looking 'round the web. I wondered about the DC for the reason you stated, but dutifully rigged up a 12v center-positive to do the job here at home (taking it mobile soon). Anytime we can delete a cable--cleaner install. 7100 Icom here. Thanks for info.

Good job Eric. I just purchased the MFJ 998. I’ve heard (and seen on a review you did) it’s a decent tuner. It won’t make my antenna resonant but at least those “edges that are close“ could have a little more power to them through the Tuner. Nice video.

I know this is an old thread but I just don't know where else to go...I purchased an MFJ-939Y to use with my FT-710. All I've got is a 20 meter dipole which tunes very well even without a tuner but even better with the rig's internal tuner. Well, not being able to install any other antennae due to association restrictions, I've tried 15 and 40 meters using an MFJ-949e. Got some decent results (1.5:1 and lower), so I thought I'd purchase the auto one which also benefits me in that it is a little smaller. I'd love to be able to tune 10, 15 and 40,. Well, it's going back. Not only did I find that the tuner will not work with the rig's "tuner" button even with the proper cable, but it will not even come remotely close to tuning anything outside of 20 meters (which I certainly don't eve need it for due to the fact that radio's internal tuner actually does a better job). When I say not even close, the tuner will not do anything but shut down and claim high SWR. It also gives some CW codes which are thrown out so fast that I find it difficult if not impossible to even read. They must be at about 45wpm, something which I have trouble with at my age. The manual is completely useless. Have you tried this tuner with the FT-710 by any chance? I am about to ship the tuner back to under the rock that it came from, but am willing to listen to suggestions.
@HamRadioConcepts
@HamRadioConcepts Жыл бұрын
I have not used it with the 710 but I feel if you have an internal tuner already, an external tuner is a waste. I do not use tuners at all, I only use resonant antennas. That tuner did a good job when I tested it years ago. But if your rig has a tuner, this is not needed. And this tuner only matches an unmatched antenna to your radio, it's not "tuning" your antenna. Keep that in mind.
@user-ku4tb6xo5w

@@HamRadioConcepts It's being shown in the video with a rig that has an internal tuner. For the most part, the internal tuners don't tune beyond 3:1 mismatches. This tuner is rated at being able to handle 30:1. Tuners like this are meant not only to add a tuner to a rig that doesn't have one, but also to replace the built in ones. The FT-710 has a setting with which I can disable the internal tuner and designate an external instead. This is what I've done. It's supposed to be an improved alternative to the internal one, no? Also, the video is demonstrating how much better it does than the internal tuner. Great that you can have an antenna for each band you use. If I could do that, I wouldn't want a tuner either. I tried an MFJ-949e. It did an admirable job, and I was able to work on 4 bands with the same 20 meter dipole. but being a manual tuner it was a pain in the butt. That's why I wanted to give this one a try. No it's not the same as having a 40, a 20, a 15 and a 10, but the 949e worked and it worked well. I may have to go back to it.

Changing to another make/model of radio can be done, but there may be more to it than just changing the interface cable. It may be necessary to also change internal jumpers.
@tpobrienjr
@tpobrienjr 2 жыл бұрын
You're right. But there are only a small number of jumpers. I think the tuner + cable + jumper is a well balanced design. Also, it was polite of MFJ to show how to wire your own cables.

This was posted a while back, but the inability to tune a wide range of frequencies to a single antenna doesn't mean Yaesu cheaped out on the internal tuner, but is a result of the real estate inside the unit. If they added on almost as much again to the size of the Yaesu as the external tuner is, they could tune as widely as the external tuner. It's always a tradeoff... Thanks for the video, I just ordered one! :-)
@stevelacy316
@stevelacy316 7 жыл бұрын
That's true the internal tuners was not meant to tune much over 3 to 1 match they are just for a already resonant antenna to just touch it up a bit my FT-990 has a great tuner in it but its not meant for high swr,s . I ordered one to :) .

I don’t think he said. I can tell you, if you build a simple 75meter dipole, run ladder line from it, to a 9:1 balun, then into your shack with coax, you will tune everything, and get results. I put an NVIS 75m dipole up in under two hours, from start to finish. I used aluminum electric fence wire (bare wire), a scrap piece of pvc, two insulators, 9:1 balun and 2 wire nuts.

I need a tuner but the problem is I can't ground it. My shack is not near an outside access point leading outside. If I were to ground the tuner to a groundrod outside, the ground wire would be at least 45ft from the shack i side the house to the ground rod outside. Having a ground wire that long would pretty much resonate to act as an antenna. Are there any solutions to the issue of a ground wire being to long to ground a tuner?

after getting the tuner in ( after many months on back order ) it will not tune like the video states if you are let say 20 meter as long as you tune 40 to 10 meters fine but it depends on the antenna you have more than likely he is running a mult band antenna. if you have a 20 meter antenna you can tune 40- 10 the one i have antenna that is built for around 20 meg it will not tune upper 40 meter, 60 or 80 meters and it will not tune that fast even thro the tuner does not tune like he said the tuner is still a good tuner but it is best to get a good antenna that is built for a multbands and used the tuner with that type of antenna. my understanding it work fine on a longwire as well have not try that one. some times it is hard to get it to tune even on 20 meters so it you know a ham that have one get him to let you try it before buying one

My antenna at the time was an 80 meter OCF dipole.. You should not be using a tuner for the bands lower than your antenna. If you have a 20m dipole you can tune 20, 17, 15, 12 10 and 6. You cannot tune 40 meters on a 20 meter wire.

You continually press the tuner button on the 450 to show how slow its internal tuner is. But, my understanding is that the 450 has 100 memories, and if you return to a frequency that has been previously tuned there is no need to tune the rig again, just have the tuner section activated. Of course, the 939 has a much greater range than the internal tuner, but if your antenna doesn't need that range the internal tuner is fine.

QUESTION -- Do you have to tune only once for each band? Is it tuned for each incremental frequency between, say (7.125 thru 7.300) on 40-meters? If so, why would the tuner need 16,000 memories? I'm confused on this issue.

I just bought a FT 991A, I can transmit on vhf/uhf but I can't seem to transmit on HF. Has anyone encountered this issue? I finally got to speak to the Yaesu technical help today and they told me to do a full reset but, that did not help. They are thinking that it may have something to do with my antenna and or tuner. I just bought a G5RV Pro ZS6BKW from Amateur radio supplies and I have it hooked up through my antenna tuner (MFJ-939). They had me disconnect the antenna tuner and plug the coax directly to the radio but, that didn't help either. I don't have a dummy load that I could use to double check the swr. Anyone got any ideas on what is could be?

Was MFJ smart enough to use chokes on the wall wart? I'm betting not. This is what is keeping me from buying one; otherwise I will have to power it up off my DC supply. Wall warts are notorious for noise, esp on 40M. My Icom 7300 may have 12 VDC on the rear panel; haven't checked yet. Regardless, unless MFJ shielded or choked the wall wart, I would not use it to powwr the tuner.

Not a fair comparison! The MFJ has had the frequency and SWR settings previously memorized, unlike the rig's internal antenna tuner. Terrible comparison, of course the rig's antenna tuner took longer... it needed to "find" the NEW best SWR. Fair enough about the rig's tuner not finding a tune on 80m as it is only good up to about 300 ohms. Other rigs can store tuner memories and they would be as fast as the MFJ. Poor comparison !!

If manufacturers of Ham equipment were to lower their stupidly high prices, more and more people would be attracted to the hobby. As it, it is ridiculously expensive to build a half decent shack these days. Equipment makers are cutting off their noses to spite their faces though because lower prices would mean more sales and there is no reason for most of the markup they place on this stuff. Add up the cost of a decent radio, power pack, co-axe, antenna/s tuners plus any test gear you want to buy and the total price is outrageous. I can only hope China will start to produce high quality stuff at much lower prices because we need the competition. The signs are that it is going that way and I am glad.

InTheNameOfJustice Have you thought about building your own equipment? There are lots of decent kits out there, from Elecraft, to TEN-TEC, to the Sienna that offer a wide range of features at many price points. Also, equipment design is not cheap and there is often years of expense without a dime coming in from it. Those costs have to be factored into the price.

Jack Purdum I have zero wish to build my own and while I realise that R&D costs money I also have enough economic acumen myself to know that R&D costs are recovered, usually, within the first year of an model's release. Often much sooner. Any subsequent improvements to the model are usually the result of customer feedback AFTER those costs have been recovered. Under normal economic circumstances the costs will decline rapidly thereafter as all of the tooling, design and advertising costs will have been met and the justification for keeping the price high diminishes. This would normally mean, obviously, a fall in price to the customer. Except in the world of Ham radio. For reasons not yet made clear to me, in this world, prices almost never fall much at all from their starting point. This would seem to be caused by two possible factors: Blatant profiteering and customers dumb enough to go on paying through the nose. Possibly because of some perverse snobbery factor associated with high cost items. Added to this situation are many others like it in the various retail fields surrounding purchasing a Ham Radio. For example, why do a few aluminium tubes, rivets and plastic inserts, a few pieces of wire and a plug socket put together into an antenna, cost so much money? The contents of an antenna are very cheap when bought in bulk. Yet the cost is often sky high and again, never seems to obey the normal rules of market forces and come down. The same applies to almost every piece of equipment found in the shack. Only the multimeter seems to have obeyed the rules of normal economics and become cheaper and cheaper. With the possible exception of the soldering iron -- though many of them are ridiculously over priced also.

InTheNameOfJustice I just looked at the price of gear in my 1961 ARRL handbook. Over 50 years ago it cost about the same number of dollars to set up a nice boat anchor rig as it does today for a modern rig. Ham gear is a bargain these days.

Jeff Leites That's a load of BS pal.

InTheNameOfJustice Call it BS if you want, but here are the numbers: Looking at an HF rig - Today at ARS an Alinco DX-SR9T - $699.95, Allinco DX-SR8T - $529.95, Icom IC-718 - $599.95, ICOM IC-7200 - $799.95,. Considering the advances in technology since 1961, these radios are far better than anything you could purchase back then when $200 a week was a pretty good salary ($466 is the federal poverty level today for a family of 4). Not many prices are printed in the 1961 Handbook, but here' are a few I found for top name SSB gear that were more basic than today's gear noted above (keep in mind you needed both a transmitter and a receiver) - Viking Ranger Transmitter - $329.50, Hammarlund HQ-170 Receiver - $359, Hallicrafters SX-101A Receiver - $399.50 You can point to the multi-kilobuck rigs of today, but they have features that didn't exist back then. So a "load of BS"? I hardly think so.

you're comparing the MFJ memories to the inbuilt ATU doing a manual tune each time. The inbuilt atu has memories too. All you have to do is tune it once. every time you go back it's ready to go. 0 seconds required. You also didn't show a manual tune on the MFJ for comparison, just previously tuned frequencies.

The FT450 does not have built in memories on the internal ATU.. The FT450D however does have memories. That was an upgraded feature on the D model

I know this is an older post BUT I recently purchased the 939y for my ft 450 and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but it won't tune anything. I turn on the tuner then my radio the green light is on when I key down it does nothing. If I key down and talk it goes crazy with high swr and the green light turns off. I've tried resetting to factory settings I made sure the radio is o only putting out 10 watts of power. I made sure the tuner light on the radio was off. I'm wondering if there is something I've missed with maybe radio settings to get this to work together properly.. any help please?

Transmit CW at 10 watts into it, it will tune in 2 or 3 seconds, then switch back to ssb. It will save it into memory for the next time you are on that freq.

HamRadioConcepts ok that seemed to work now thanks. I must have missed that some where to start off in cw mode. Will i need.to do this when changing freq each time? Like turn down the power switch to cw then turn back to ssb and turn power back up?

Yes thats what i did, now if you get the interface cable, set the radio to external tuner, then you can hit the tune button on the radio, IT SETS the radio to low power cw for you and tunes.. given there is a cable for your radio.

What did you set the tuner to in the FT 450 Tuner Menu???? ATAS or EXT ATU or INT ATU or INTRATU or F TRANS ????
@HamRadioConcepts
@HamRadioConcepts 8 жыл бұрын
ext tun, but that's only for the interface cable and the tune button. If you just transmit into it at low power cw carrier you don't need to set it to anything.
