The Tregurtha was launched in 1942 as the SS Samoset but fairly quickly acquired by the Navy and christened the USS Chiwawa and used as a tanker. After the war, it was turned back over to the Maritime Commission when it was modified as a bull carrier. During ‘59-‘61 it was lengenthed, widened, and deepened. In ‘76 it was again lengthened. It was named the Walter Stirling, then William Clay Ford, then in ‘89 when Interlake Steamship Company acquired her it was renamed the Lee A Tregurtha.

Top-notch video as always, Sam. Apparently the train on top of the dock has little to do with the loading if the silos in the dock are full? I didn't see the ore levels on any of the train cars going down as the ship was being loaded. Also, noticed a soda bottle go down a shoot early in the video. Oops!

Thanks! I believe the ore being dropped was there from another set of cars that had already left. The cars on top should be for when the pockets empty. LS&I likes to always keep loaded cars on the dock.

@RugbyJunction the dock doesn’t have silos. There isn’t enough room. As Sam says, they are pockets about 20 feet wide, and at a sharp angle. The 200 pockets hood about 210 tons of pellets. The cars on top are for “run throughs” when the ship is trimming the load or patching the load. We “charge” or load the dock fully before a ship starts loading. If a ship is loading and the Dock job is on top they’re most likely working the other side to get it ready for the next ship.
