Carte Blanche

16 күн бұрын

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟲 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰.
It was a clear day off the coast of Cape Town. A deep-sea fishing trawler carrying twenty crew was fishing for hake. But within hours, something catastrophic happened on the boat, causing it to sink in under five minutes. Nine fishermen survived. But 11 others were trapped inside and disappeared beneath the waves. One survivor claims the vessel had returned to port with engine trouble the previous day and sat there for fourteen hours before heading back out to sea. With many unanswered questions and an official investigation underway, Carte Blanche examines the final moments of the doomed vessel and speaks to families desperate for the return of their loved ones' remains.

Submarine got caught in the net and dragged the trawler down. This has happened before in the north sea. No country will acknowledge that one of their subs were in the area, for security reasons. I don't think this mystery with ever be solved. Rest in peace to the fishermen who lost their lives. Condolences to the families.

@@joaorodrigues6526 Its not contradicting, its not secret intel or something but basic stuff, why would you ever know about any submarines beneath our waters, he's just stating that it already happened e.g. what happened with the Karen, although its not in the north sea. Put 2 and 2 together, we wouldn't know why and how many subs are in our waters and what their purposes are. Subs and normal cruise ships or fishing boats are a whole different class hence "secret intel"

@@abcdef-hn6hu : 'The Captain ordered that the trawl doors be shut' ... Would a captain with concerns about engine power leave a great big trawl net full of fish dangling from the stern? Submarines have sonar. I agree that we wouldn't know about submarines in our waters but I doubt there was a submarine lurking about. May as well blame it on Hamas.

This is a tragedy, and I think the families are owed answers. However I also feel that if you have loved ones working at sea, you should be ready for the possibility that they might die at sea and you will not be able to recover their remains. It's very dangerous work and the ocean is very deep.

Sadly the circumstances which caused the trawler to sink wont easily come to light. Either it was a SA Navy sub; or more likely a foreign powers sub that caused the incident, although the storm that has just passed Cape Town could likely be blamed as well.. Although I doubt it. A force that can pull a trawler sideways and down should be about double the weight of the vessel, which personally confirms the suspicion that it was a submarine that was caught in the trawling line and was maneuvering away from the vessel which caused the accident. Rest in Peace to those that lost their lives; in 1958 my great grandfather lost his life at sea as well off Kleinmond, with his body still at sea. A very sad situation, condolences to the families and my hope that Sea Harvest will at the very least offer compensation to everyone affected.

Sea Harvest can't just give an answer instantly. Its clear the trawler sank very quickly. Trawlers of that size are built to withstand rough seas, so clearly something outside of Sea Harvest's control played a role in the sinking.

In memory of the lost lives, I won’t be buying sea harvest products until i hear that the families are helped and the investigation is concluded. The company needs to compensate the families, They also need to properly train and equip workers well enough before sending them out to sea. Where is the Health and Safety plan for these employees??? It’s not just about being a profitable business but also about being humane and respecting those employees risking their lives for bringing food to your table!

I am slightly confused in the sense that I owned a 2-seeter jet-ski and was required by law to have at least 2 life jackets, a flair gun and a fire extinguisher on a "sea vessel" barely 3.5m in length? My sincere empathy and condolences to the families of the deceased and may the deceased RIP. In addition my thanks to the employees of Sea Harvest for putting their lives at risk for a quality product I regularly purchase. I trust the shareholders/owners/management will do what is right and compensate the bereaved dependants and family members.

I should imagine that Sea Harvest would have at least had insurance on the lives of its crew members. A well to do company that has been in existence for many years. If not then the company should compensate the families next of kinds for thier losses. Perhaps Ground Up could look at this for a possible law suit?
@Ca55-WP
@Ca55-WP 14 күн бұрын
Companies generally don't take out life insurance on their staff. The only occasional exception is when the staff are high ranking executives whose loss would have a material financial impact on the company. As for suing Sea Harvest if they refuse to compensate the families, that's pure fantasy. I mean, you have to think - on what basis would the company be sued? Failing to pay something they have no obligation to pay? Be real here. And finally, Ground Up is a group of journalists not an attorneys firm.

vessels sink all the time around the world, all it takes is a break in one of the pipes below the sea level, usually the intercooler pipes which bring sea water onboard or the deck wash/fire pumps, that'll start filling the ship up pretty quickly ,then all you need is a descent swell to list the ship to its side and then have the momentum of the water smashing into the bulkheads below to further tip the ship past the point of return . ships are constantly leaking water into the inside, its pretty normal, there's no such thing as a leak proof ship! it takes the crew to be ever watchful and keep it to a manageable ,safe level .I happened to be at sea on another ship fairy close to this ship on this day and the swell was pretty solid with a long period in it

I don’t quite understand…why is swimming not deemed a mandatory survival skill in this industry? 😟
@SRC2387
@SRC2387 13 күн бұрын
It is a very strange scenario; but the vessel itself should be ewuipped with enough lifesaving equipment to ensure the personnel do not need to be able to swim, because the equipment is there to keep them afloat. The Survival Certification they all had, in that course, the skills to float and board a survival dinghy is taught and tested + how to refloat an upside down dinghy. No disrespect to the deceased and a lesson hopefully to all commercial and seafaring personnel; but personally I would learn to swim and survive in a rough sea if I worked in those circumstances. My own experience in the SA Navy and off shore drilling has shown that very few crew members actually know how to swim; which is shocking. RIP to the lost

Very sad story but the reality of the immense repercussions that result after this accident is far from over. One very real reality that all must face, is the fact that the sea took its toll. This has been happening since man went to sea, and it will happen in the future. A ship that sinks this fast has devastating results and very little evidence.of the actual reason. Condolences for the families and for the SEA Harvest Company.
