MG Metro 6R4 VS Opel Kadett (Vauxhall Astra) Group B. MG Metro 6R4 It means 6 cylinder rally drive four wheels. Race which belongs to the third heat of the British Rallycross Grand Prix 1990.Personally I had an Opel Kadett GSI and in England they call Vauxhall Astra GTE. This Vauxhall had a 2.1-liter turbo engine with around 650bhp body with kevlar and carbon fiber.

Such a shame that Vauxhall/Opel never made a roadgoing GTE 4x4, with a turbo'd C20XE it would have made a proper Ford Cosworth competitor. I owned an early (88/89) GTE 16v, it was a great hot hatch with one of the best 16 valve engines ever made. Driving that car with twice the power and AWD would have been insane!

I was there that day.. Mesmerised by that display, John Welch was mega in that Astra. But the 6R4's are the best sounding cars ever, loved them..

Great to see everyones comments, I certainty enjoyed this race, the race was held for me whilst I fitted a new clutch, hands went in my race gloves grease and all, as you can see I wanted this race.

@@johnsmith-nl3js in my opinion the real problem of this new rx era is the Joker lap.. imagine this race nowdays: guy williams goes to the Joker lap, 4 laps with 3 cars far away each other and a virtual pass when welch goes to his Joker.. insteed of this wonderfull dance with just 3 cars

@@manuellabbate8669 definately joker lap is a load of bullshit as well! as the years have gone by most motorsport seems to have suffered quite badly the only one i can think of that is still any good is european hillclimb racing, crazy drivers, mental cars and barely any limits apart from teams imagination!

650bhp xtrac variable torque split middle diff , sleeved down manta 400 engine with a BMW F1 turbo what's not to like driven by one of the nicest guys is Motorsport. Preferred it in blue though

Fantastic racing, Rallycross is tricky, going from slippy to grippy surfaces... You can't argue with the grunt of the Opal, but we all know that now in our turbocharged world :-) It was a different story when they put twin turbos on the 6R4 though!

I own a Kadett GSI 16V, but I should point out one more time these track cars were nothing identical but the rough shape, mine would look like a shopping trolley in that race.

the x-trac astra had the roof, rear hatch opening, A pillar, bulkhead, door frame and windscreen from standard kadett :p

The Metro has...um...well it has...um...well I'm sure it has something in common with it's road-going sibling. Oh yes the name! Or maybe the windscreen frame. The windscreen frame was all that the Peugeot 205 T16 shared with it's road-going sibling. I once saw an ordinary Metro with a 6R4 bodykit simply grafted on to the ordinary car. It looked comical with the wheels about one foot inside the wheel arches! It looked like a fairground Dodgem!

I once saw an ordinary silver/grey coloured Metro with a 6R4 bodykit just glued onto the normal car's wings! The wheels were about 2 foot inside the extended wheel-arches! It looked ridiculous!

the driver in the red 6R4 made really big mistakes and even if he was faster, he has been beaten by that ridiculous (car only, the driver was good) kadett with brake problems

i said ridiculous because the 6R4 looks like a monster with this really wide body and these massive spoilers compared to the kadett which is much less impressive (not talking about beauty, okay ?) anyway i wasn't talking about performance and NEVER said it was a bad car. I don't want to argue more with you since we got the same opinion about the kadett (it's a good car obviously, it won the race) and also because you can't talk to someone without talking shit to him. out of the 49 rounds and 6 years that john campaigned this astra it won 3 rounds, and 0 championships. out of those 49 rounds and 6 years a 6R4 won 31 rounds and 5 championships.

wow my last comment is really old but what i saw in this video that shocked me is that the metro was really faster than the kadett and wasn't able to keep the lead, we ask a driver to do the same time to the second at the very least, so if you re a lot faster, you should overtake once and never be caugh again but i can t say that the driver was bad, i don t know the circumstances. from what you say the kadett wasn't even that good. Thanks for the informations

dont get me wrong i'm not "kadett bashing", that would be odd as i have owned mk2 astras for 20 years now :) the xtrac astra was competitive and had many podium finishes. i was just putting things into perspective for the GM fanboy up there :)
