The MG08 was the principal heavy machine gun used by the Germans during World War I. It was a development of Maxim’s 1894 design licensed for manufacturing in Germany. It fired a 7.9mm cartridge at a rate of 500 rounds per minute. The sled mount was the most stable mount ever designed for the heavy Maxim gun, although the sled and gun together weighed some 62 Kgs (136 lbs).
The cylindrical water can disappeared early from the front lines to be replaced by a water container having the same dimensions as an ammunition case.
At the start of WW1, the German army used an ammunition box with two compartments each holding a 250-round belt. These were replaced in 1915 by a box holding a single 250-round belt.
Animation created using Cinema 4D. Music credits are shown at the end of the movie.

These videos are AWSOME!!!! I've always wanted to make guns but the farthest I've gotten is drawing the outside of the guns in 2D or thinking up the design and mechanisms entirely in my head!! (Which normally doesn't go well) So these videos help me very much by helping understand the inner workings of some very interesting firearms!!!!

3:60 is there water in the gun cylinder to keep the barrel from overheating and melting down? Cause if so, that’s a genius idea. Plus I never thought this was how an MG08 worked
@bobjackson4287
@bobjackson4287 4 жыл бұрын
The principle here works very similarly to a auto engine; as long as there is water in the jacket the barrel cannot melt due water keeping it at a manageable temperature. As long as there is water in the jacket the barrel will never exceed 212F (100C) Higher thermal temps increase the rate of boiling water hence why the steam was being collected and condensing back into water. A Vickers gun in the 1960's (Same action as the MG08, just inverted) fired over 5 million rounds in 7 days and the gun was still in firing condition after that. One thing to note is barrels ware out over time and they changed after every full hour of firing (Takes about 3 mins on a 08 or Vickers) however heat wise a water cooled mg can keep the barrel firing endlessly.

was the liquid in the barrel water or gas if it was water how did the gun fire so fast without gas and if it was gas how did it power the gun?
@vbbsmyt
@vbbsmyt 7 жыл бұрын
When a cartridge is fired, the recoil forces the barrel and connected breech to the rear. The MG08 can fire 10 rounds a second, so the barrel will get very hot and quickly burn out if not cooled. The hot barrel passes through a water jacket, and boils the water to take away the heat, and because cooling water is precious on a battlefield, the steam is condensed back to water in the external can. If the steam was allowed to vent into the air, this would provide a very good aiming point for the enemy. Rob

Just wonder - how the last case removed from the exhaust pipe (after the firing stops)?
@vbbsmyt
@vbbsmyt 7 жыл бұрын
After firing stops, and if safe to do so, crew will clean the gun. The breech block is unhitched (see last scene) and then unscrewed from crank. This allows a clear path through the ring of trigger and crank to the barrel for cleaning rod. The spent cartridge can be removed using the reamer tool carried on sled. That is the Z-shaped tool with wooden handle between the tongs and the oil bottle case. If the gun will be going into action in the near future, then it doesn't matter if the last spent cartridge remains in ejection tube. Rob

Water-cooled machine guns. Forget field guns and artillery, THESE are the reason I’d be afraid to leave the trenches during WWI. Imagine having a bunch of these firing and trying to mow down your unit within seconds, the water keeping them from easily overheating so that they can KEEP firing at you. All was NOT that quiet on the Western Front.

It was plenty good enough at the time. Made the weapon very controllable in terms of ammunition expenditure, and produced the most terrifying audible distinct series of shots. When you issue the gun at such a rate that every battalion has several, and you're fighting massed troops advancing in loose order over open ground from a mile away, how fast do you need it to shoot?
