Had my Trophy since beginning of Jan. Absolutely love it. Air-con adjustment - swipe down screen stays on. Few niggles - cabin doesn't heat up properly (as I think it should and as you noted), Lane Keep Assist - you do get used to it and realise when it's going to 'Kick Off' (so to speak). Cold snap in Uk..motorway .. (32 miles each way on drive to work) 2.X-ish miles/Kwh. Noticed more recently (now it's started to get warmer) 3.x (high X) going to work/driving around. I've also had to reset the infotainment sytem a number of times (Home button for 20-seconds ish), when, for eaxmple, you can't change radio volume. (Which is a pain but not a £5K+ minimum pain) For the price I don't believe it can be beaten (yet?!)

Great review as always Nobby and good luck! You’re the first person, for me at least, to mention the ‘wireless sliding phone’ syndrome, the USB C Carplay and the aircon temp issues. The temp, the ACC braking and headlights staying on are an MG feature, not exclusive to the MG4, I have a 5 LR pre-facelift and you get used to it! I’m delighted with my EV, but I will never buy another one unless it has a rear wiper, rear armrest and physical buttons for the aircon. In fact, I believe that there should be legislation to reverse the trend for putting everything in the infotainment screen. It’s as bad as using your phone when driving.

@MrGrentch Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Its kinda crazy where I can be (rightfully)pulled over and get a fine for looking at my phone, but digging through multiple menus on a big feckin' ipad stuck to the dash is OK, even encouraged by the manufacturers. As usual it's down to costs and margins. Prototyping, manufacturing and updating, even setting different trim levels and driving modes are _significantly- cheaper to do with a screen than manual controls. Even though they appear more "luxurious" to us. I suppose you get used to it. To be fair I drive a 90's car so it's a knob for everything, including the seat to steering wheel interface module. 😄

I have the MG4 SR (in the same grey which I quite like). I have wondered about the range. Much less when cold. I have noticed it hovering around 2 miles per kWh (I'm in the UK although from Dublin). When I set off in the morning on the motorway if I reset the mileage after driving about 3 or 4 miles then I notice I'll get between 2.5 & 3 miles per kWh. So I guess it takes a while for the battery to heat up and then seems better in terms of efficiency. Looking forward to seeing an increase in the summer 🤞.

Good review and well told honestly. One thing that a lot of reviewers don't mention, is that hardly any of the personal settings in your MG4 infotainment system, aren't remembered. You're driving 'profile' resets every time you turn off the car, so everything like your regenerative settings AC and the likes gets reset, meaning you have to re-enter those settings to your liking all the g*d d*mn time. I was incredibly stoked seeing the MG4 with it's superb handling, but the software (slow, a bit buggy, forgets lots of settings) definitely made me hold off on buying one. The plastic wheel caps on top of 17" alu-rims are a little weird, but considering the cost of the car it's kind of understandable.

I'm going from a Model 3 to the MG4 when they go on sale in Australia. Does the MG4 Trophy have the following - LFP battery (hope so), the equivalent of the Tesla phone-key for auto locking/unlocking, tyre pressure monitoring, frequent over the air software updates, speed limit recognition which automatically reduces speed when the speed limit drops, voice commands, a glass roof (I hope not), or a blindspot warning system? I expect for the price many of these features will be absent. Also, I hear the regen sadly doesn't allow one-pedal driving (like the Tesla does) - how do you find the regen? Thank you.
@NobbyOnCars Жыл бұрын
Regen ok but not one pedal. LFP only on smaller battery. Most of the safety you mentioned not standard. It’s a cool car but not sure it’s a match for a M3 to be honest.

I had the same thing (but worse) with Adaptive Cruise Control. It would slow down massively for no reason (car in front at least 5 car lengths away), then go up a bit, then slow down... actually dangerous and scary in my test. The temp gauge is faulty (or the software). It's 5 degrees out, so your 25 is actually 20. CPU is better than ZS EV, but not by much. Still laggy. One Pedal Driving strength is brilliant (same as Tesla). Handles like a go-cart on the road. Cheap interior (meh). My test car was two days old and already had a driver door rattle though....

I can't get my head around how fundamental design mistakes are made. In MG HQ these issues will have been discussed ad-nausium in meetings attended by highly paid experienced people, who come up with bizarre choices which are a detriment to safety. Their choices take us backwards not forward . These involve visibility and ease of use of controls. Often used controls should 'fall to hand' without taking your eyes off the road. These controls are now made difficult to find and use. No rear wiper is an unbelievable omission and betrays a worrying insight into corporate/designer/management mental illness problem. Some wil say 'rubbish you get used to it'. Yes you will, but getting used to it does not mean it's as easy or as quick to use as a competent design and it remains a driver distraction. MG...Reduce distractions, improve controls and visibility.
@Krydolph Жыл бұрын
There are some buttons on the steering wheel most reviewers miss. on the right side you can control like the radio, or press the star, and then you control temp and fans On the left side there is one too.... I can't remember what that controls as default, but you can go in and chose yourself what you want it to be a shortcut for - so there are options to control the most used things directly from the steering wheel. And at least there are SOME buttons, we could wish for more, but still better than tesla.

@cloggsy1971 Жыл бұрын
Hello Nobby. MG4 Trophy owner in the UK here. I’ve owned my car since December ’22. I have found, if using the heater, it has a huge impact on the range, especially if you are running it at 25°C 😬 In the cold (minus temperatures), I was lucky to get 2.4m/kWh. Now the temperatures are improving (8/12°C), then the range has improved 3.0 to 3.2m/kWh… With the heater/AC off you can easily achieve 4.5 to 4.8m/kWh, but obviously, you can still get misting issues. It is more efficient to use the heated steering wheel and heated seats than it is to try and heat the air in the cabin. UK models don’t have heat pumps fitted. I don’t know whether the cars delivered in Ireland do? 🤔 All in all, a fabulous car for the money, but my daughter has a Renault Megane E-Tech First Edition & that is FABULOUS. I have serious car envy with that car. It feels like getting out of a Rolls Royce and into a toy car between the two, but the Renault is MUCH more expensive of course.

I couldn't help notice ( even though the rear hatch was closed and lined up correctly) that the rear drivers rear light setting was out of sink with the light bar that runs in-between the rear light fittings by a few centimetres, in other words bad quality build and looked wrong. I have exclusive on order, but actually the blind spot is something I don't want and according to many reviews driver must switch it off every single time which must be super annoying. Maybe my driving way is different but when I'm overtaking and going back to left those systems keep beeping at me even if I'm good few meters in front 😐

You can't complain about the cost and what you get for your money. I think at that price it's going to get quite a bit of interest from people who couldn't justify the cost of other EVs on the market.

hi Hobby, just to add to your notes, done about 350 miles over the weekend in my MG4 SE. it performed at about 4.2 to 3.7 over the journey there and back 2/3rds motorway driving around 60 mph. i Love this car , i have ordered a Trophy to upgrade too but 5-6 month to wait....
@thug3m Жыл бұрын
I have heard Trophy one has a bit lower range because of the drag from the spoiler. Hows the comfort on the car in long drives? Any issues you experienced? Looking to buy one!

I assume that is in UK in our cold winter. Damn that's so impressive. Had one parked next to my ID3 the other day and i liked the look of it. Lease is up soon so this is on my list.

I only got it down to 19s on test. 90kph out and 60-55 back. Pumped tyres properly. Maybe the battery heater was on And in belfast I got only 3.2 up from 2 the whole trip. I’m very concerned about the electric consumption

Driving it back today air con off, I was getting 11kWh/100kms taking it very handy.

Second hand prices are getting affordable, I got a hyundai kona for £20000, year and a half old 12100 miles on clock, only had it a few months but I was getting 6.5 miles per kw when it was warm weather now that its getting a bit cooler I am still getting 5 miles per kw. Will see what happens in the winter.

"The rear spoiler helps with aerodynamics and efficiency" - If so, then why does the long range SE model without the spoiler have a greater range?

no electric mirrors, heated,seats , heated steering wheel on the se and these are considered in the range calculation

If you have an electrical car you have to adjust your driving style to get the stated range I have a Leaf and have gotten more miles that the stated 168 you need to learn to drive electric and use your regeneration to get the best mileage. If you drive an electric car like a petrol car you will never get the stated miles it that simple and it does not matter what electric car you are in. The only way around it is to buy a bigger battery than you need so you can raz around to your hearts content if that's what you want to do

Our current (ICE) car lease is up in August 2025, and thanks to the fantastic warranty I think I will seek to buy one of these used (Trophy edition in the UK) soon after, as there will probably be a nice discount on a 2022/2023 model and plenty of life left in the battery. I'm yet to hear anything bad about this car, bar some software issues, like the lock-in problem, and no interior light at the rear - but the first has been fixed now, and I am sure it isn't that difficult to retrofit a light. The only thing that might change my plans is seeing what MG introduces next between now and the end of 2025!

No stock (for 6 months) so is it launched? No rear speakers/Wipers/Sat Nav/ Reversing camera even though its electric Port is in the rear. (Regular models.) Good luck reversing into EV charger bays. So my hopes for this car have been dashed. No cars for 6 months WTF is that about (Irish Dealer said). BYD to launch soon. So EV grant will be gone in six months so add 5k to prices as you won't be able to buy at the stated price. No stock till july/Aug after grant has been removed.

I’m sceptical that all grants will be just wiped. We’ll see. There’ll be 800 Funky Cats supposedly here in 2023.

The smaller LFP standard range battery is going to out live the NMC long range battery. LFP is the future for smaller, cheaper cars. My standard range car has just done 87 miles mixed winter driving for 50% battery used. Congratulations on becoming a full time car reviewer, well deserved.

I have just test driven and left a deposit on an MG4 Trophy today the reason it dose not start first time is because you have to do it twice that is how you start it. Also reference your phone sliding off I threw the car around on test drive and the phone never move once so another fact that's not correct
@NobbyOnCars Жыл бұрын
So because your phone didn’t slide off you’re right and I made it up? Such a stupid comment to make.

We have a seat aroma 191 115 bhp 38000 km se technology Opel corsa sc with all extra 202 10000km. I'd like both base model one in white or black. Other in red a must. One in cash one with some financial services. The seat has no finance. Corsa has € 4500.

I struggle to find any good points on my MG4. The thing tries is very best to kill me on a daily basis. My MG4 was made with no seam sealer in the rear on the vehicle, seriously. Its leaks and stinks and feels like a 20 year old car. MG know they did not make some of the cars with seam sealer but ignored the problem until we all came back complaining our cars stink. I would not recommend an MG4.
