I finally realised what this video is about. The whole video is a metaphor for how society treats famous people. If you listen to the lyrics its all about how fame causes you to disassociate from everything around you. The creature in the video is 'ugly' representing how we view stars as something to gawk at. In the video Andrew and Ben are essentially its fans or managers, just following it with little input. When the creature first loses its leg that represents how fame causes you to no longer be able to stand on your own two feet. As they continue walking it eventually loses its mouth representing how others now speak for you. Eventually the creature 'slips' and its a down hill spiral from there. The 'fans' or 'manager' dont do anything to help they just watch. Eventually the creature can't go on but they force it to by physically carrying it to its death- where it can only look at what its become. They clap at the end like the creatures whole existence and suffering was simply there to entertain them. Because in the end all you need is one big congratulations.

Bravo irmão. Você realmente entendeu esta metáfora ! E eu... My favorite song of theirs overall. I remember my first concert was MGMT in Louisville Ky 2013. What an incredible experience, MGMT fans are all awesome. I was underage and still had immense fun and was offered anything I ever needed and more from other fans ;). However they played all their songs but didnt play this one yet so i started freaking out about to cry....then andrew says "weve got one more really good one for you" and started this gem up. I was so happy. Concerts are a distant memory now....

My stays and draw my blinds So I can't tell what's really there And all I need's a great big congratulations I'll keep your dreams You pay attention for me As strange as it seems I'd rather dissolve than have you ignore me The ground may be moving fast But I tied my boots to a broken mast The difference is clear You throw it in your cauldron Rust and veneer, dusk and dawn Steinways and Baldwins You start with a simple stock of all the waste And salt to taste But damn my? is this it and room on fire are both good albums what are you smoking i suppose you could argue that both oracular spectacular and congratulations are good albums but their self titled album was shit lol ofc music taste is subjective but looking at rym it seems to be that the consensus is that first impressions of the earth comedown machine and angles are all better than MGMT (3.1, 2.94 and 2.83 average across thousands of ratings vs 2.80 average for MGMT) granted they're all pretty bad albums (though there are a few good songs sprinkled in throughout some of them) so it doesn't much matter lol
@hippiecheezburger54578 жыл бұрын
qzyxya room on fire is like a second attempt at making another Is This It, now the strokes just use their band as a means to make money and seem like they don't give a shit for the quality or direction they went down, people don't understand MGMT so they don't get it and call it shit, I know music is subjective and I've heard all the strokes albums and all MGMT albums, they're simply not bands that you compare to each other, totally different styles of music, Is This It and Room on Fire are good because of the rawness in the playing and Julian Casablancas has very interesting baritone later turned to a more falsetto, Angles and Comedown Machine are good too, but I wouldn't say they're masterpieces, The Strokes were mediocre to begin with, that's what made Is This It such a pleasant album because it was so simple garage rock, with great melodies, any musician is capable of that kind of sound, I just MGMT are better at writing lyrics and complicated song structures, and coming up with original sounds with modern technology, MGMT only became recognized through their commercial hits but then used that popularity to take their music down a psychedelic Doors-like kind of road with the self titled album if you ask me, my previous comment was a little harsh I admit, but the true artistry isn't in the Strokes catalog im sorry, but the Strokes did set a tone for the early 2000's and all that came after, shit, Arctic Monkeys and plenty of one hit bands owe much gratification to The Strokes

To me this song means: When you're doing everything "right," and are successful and have what people from the outside would call a good life....but still feel empty.

I love this song. And for the most part, I like the music video. I like the ideas behind it, I like that it's in the desert, and I like the whole pace of the video. But I can't look at that mutant thing. It is terrifying. I feel bad for it, and it is truly sad, but gosh--I just can't look at that thing. I really wish they did a video for my favorite MGMT song, The Handshake, and had the whole video in black and white silhouettes. That would be unreal. Unrelated to this video: ANYONE WHOSE FAVORITE MGMT SONG IS THE HANDSHAKE, I ADORE YOU. The Handshake needs to get more praise. A truly inventive, chilling, trippy, distinctive, and classic MGMT track. When I think of MGMT, I think of this song. Hell--it is my favorite song of all time. Just a hair above Bohemian Rhapsody. But to conclude, this video is great, but do some tweaking to the horrid mutant thing. Make it cute. Not frightening. Thanks.

I loved the creature, it really does make you feel bad and gives a special additional flavour to the song, exactly what a music video is supposed to achieve. I wouldn't change it at all.

I agree. People should judge the band because they don’t like the lyrics. P.S. Love how millennial‘s like yourself think judging means disapproving of. Judging something is fine and dandy and everyone does it all day everyday. but kids these days have been conditioned by their SJW teachers to believe tolerance means approval and judging means disapproval.

I just interpret it as the creature represents their careers falling apart after the stress of having to live up to Oracular on fame that came at breakneck speeds. They're trying so hard to hold on to that feeling and success but ultimately just have to say "fuck it" and throw their fate to the sands of time and say "we gave it our all" (their expressions at the end)

This video is a great example of having a dream that you can't really explain or how it even got into your head to dream about it in the first place, waking up feeling upset over it but you don't really know why. One of those dreams that you never forget. Brilliant

people live their lives waiting for tomorrow, as if they would not die. the are Always anxious and making plans for the future, as if the present was irrelevante, superfluous, just one more step to achieve the future. they spend their entire lives living this paradox, and finally when they die, well, nothing happens, the cycle just repeat itself, well congratulations!

[Verse 1] Dead in the water, it's not a paid vacation The sons and daughters of city officials attend demonstrations It's hardly a sink or swim when all is well if the ticket sells [Verse 2] Out with a whimper, it's not a blaze of glory You look down from your temple As people endeavor to make it a story And chisel a marble word, but all is lost if it's never heard [Chorus] But I've got someone to make reports That tell me how my money's spent To book my stays and draw my blinds So I can't tell what's really there And all I need's a great big congratulations [Verse 3] I'll keep your dreams, you pay attention for me As strange as it seems, I'd rather dissolve than have you ignore me The ground may be moving fast But I tied my boots to a broken mast [Verse 4] The difference is clear, you throw it in your cauldron Rust and veneer, dusk and dawn, Steinways and Baldwins You start with a simple stock of all the waste and salt to taste [Chorus] But damn my luck and damn these friends That keep on combing back their smiles I save my grace with half-assed guilt And lay down the quilt upon the lawn Spread my arms and soak up congratulations
