MH17 five years on: How do you carry on when your world ends? | Australian Story

Mo, Evie and Otis Maslin became a symbol for the senselessness of the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17. Anthony ‘Maz’ Maslin and his wife Marite ‘Rin’ Norris were faced with an unbearable loss when they lost their three children and their grandfather Nick Norris, died aboard the plane that was shot down over a Ukraine warzone. All 298 passengers and crew were killed in the incident. “Our world as we knew it was absolutely over in that moment and we just started to say, ‘when the world ended’ and that’s how we refer to it now,” says mum Rin Norris. The challenge of how to survive their loss was all-consuming for Maz and Rin. The couple were part of a strong and supportive community in Perth’s Scarborough district and a group of friends surrounded them, bringing in meals and making sure that they weren’t left alone. Friends formed a “web of love” to support the couple.
As the fifth anniversary of the MH17 tragedy approaches, Maz and Rin are telling their story for the first time. They want to thank the people who helped them and honour their kids and Nick. They hope their story of overcoming intense grief might be helpful for others.

Indeed. Squabbling over ideologies and differences, land which can be referred to as sandpit. No this is my sand pit, no its mine! We are one human race, one people. We disintegrated our world into so many different countries, languages, beliefs, ideologies etc. resulting in segregation of the population. We don't see each other as one race, we see each other as Russian, British etc. Add to that the thirst for wealth and power and you have our ridiculous world full of the things we see on the news. Story of MH17 is a political one, two post soviet countries squabbling over what can only be seen as irrelevant differences. The unnecessary death of all those people over a political squabble. It makes me so angry. I have two children and it must have been such pain for the parents I this video. And when you think their death was caused by two human beings comparing egos hungry for power its just mind blowing. My heart goes out to all victims and families. Such a sad story and no one is manly enough to admit they caused the crash, really a sign of strength there (sarcasm). I have no idea what I would do if this happened to my kids. We live on a grain of sand squabbling over pointless things.

Lost my first born in a car crash back in 2014. Rhiannon was 36 years young. My world ended that day and I've never recovered the person I used to be, before that day her life ended...the pain of grief is so deep it is literally physical. How the hell Maz and Rin dealt with, and continue to deal with, the loss of their 3 children all in one go, along with Rin's dad Nick, is completely beyond my comprehension. This couple went through the worst pain a human being could possibly experience and somehow they came out to the other side with peace in their hearts, not hate...amazing. Though their little ones are no longer in their care but in the care of our loving Heavenly Father, they are alive in their hearts and by their memories a source of joy not sorrow. These parent can take comfort in knowing that for the short time their children were on this earth they gave them a wonderful life, full of joy, fun, adventure and love and those memories are the source of their strength. There is no shame in smiling again after the loss of a loved one and finding a way to go on, loving life is the best tribute they could possibly give their children! I know God lives and he will reunite families again.

Honestly, I always come back to this video whenever I'm going through any hardship in life. These two are some of the strongest people I've ever seen. I'm not ashamed to say I balled my eyes out watching this. I was in high school when this happened and had to do research on MH17 for a class. It was these three beautiful kids losing their lives which stuck with me. I remember spending hours just reading about them and looking at all the tributes. I thought at the time, "how could someone live with that pain?" It makes me so happy to see how their children live on and what beauty they have found in the face of such horrific tragedy. I hope the family have a wonderful life. Their little girl is absolutely beautiful like her brothers and sister.

Have you forgotten about flight MH370, which disappeared on March 8, 2014, the same Malaysian Boeing 777-200ER only 9M-MRO, the same airline model only of a later year of 2002, and the wreckage of which were also found at the crash site of flight MH17 Malaysian Boeing 777-200ER 9M-MRD released in 1997 (in particular an air duct with traces of the thermal effects of January 2003, and such details do not change and they can be used to judge the year of production of the aircraft +/- the year, all other air ducts and parts that do not require replacement of the 1996-1998 model years and they also had traces of thermal exposure). That is why the Dutch liars and forgers from whose airport flight MH17 took off knew in advance that they would have to hide and falsify from the wreckage of the Boeing!

I feel blessed and so very greatful to have met these beautiful children on a holiday in Malaysia about 2012...we stayed at a club med, Evie and my sister Mersey became quite close and was a massive highlight to her holiday, such kind beautiful souls who had been very well educated of the world by their parents and by seeing it for themselves as they traveled around alot, I am still so devastated about their loss and I feel greatly for the parents, they have shown the strength and courage that I feel I couldn't in a time like this. 🌷 I would like to thank them for raising the kids who will forever live on in my heart and many others.

Absolutely horrifying and heartbreaking. I’m just so sorry, no one should ever have to go through this. I can relate to living in the now. When my brother was killed I had to just focus on getting through one hour at a time. 10 years later I’m still living for each day. I am British, and I personally do not know this family, but I have followed this since the beginning. The whole senseless tragedy of 17/7/14 has always touched my heart, and the losses of these 3 beautiful children (including all of the other children and passengers on MH17) really got to me. As a mother of 3 kids, who are now similar ages to the Maslin children, I cannot imagine the gulf of loss that Rin and Maz have had to endure. Over the past 5 years they have never been far from my thoughts... I have nothing but love and respect for this couple, to hear them articulate their situation in the way that they have, brings nothing but admiration and perspective, it is deeply humbling. I'm so glad I found this on You Tube. I flew to Amsterdam the day after this, en route to the UK, and I remember standing in my brother and sister-in-law's garden thinking of the parents of these three small children and how they would ever be able to go on. I am so pleased that they have had Violet and think their courage and determination has been admirable. I can't believe it's already been 5 yrs. I'm also Australian and our whole country were shocked at this senseless attack. As a parent I felt so hard for these parents. To lose 1 child is hard enough but to lose all of your children is heartbreaking. We lost one of ours to stillbirth and that almost killed me and my husband as we were grief stricken. I had other kids to think about though. I don't think I could go on if I'd lost all. What amazing people the maslins are, God bless. I think they have incredible family and friends surrounding them too.

As someone who survived a horrific terrorist attack, u don’t “overcome,” it. What I learned later is that I had to accept it. I accept my nightmares, scars & even the surgeries I still endure... Once I learned to accept what happened, what still happens, I am able to cope & deal with it. Took 15 years to figure that out & it’s been 4 since my life has normalized.

"As they say, we are not the first, we are not the last." as President of Ukraine Kuchma said, when Ukraine S-200 shot down a Russian Tu-154, and there, unlike flight MH 17, flight SBI 1812 of Siberia was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile, and not blown up with an imitation that it was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile. Operation Northwoods has long been developed by the US special services and in 2014 the US launched it and possibly even put it on the conveyor if the information on flight MH 370 is confirmed. So everything is planned, worked out and had to happen.

With 4 kids myself I couldn't imagine going through this :'( these 2 are so strong! 15:05 had me crying. Its also heartbreaking because there were passengers on that flight that took and shared selfies of themselves in the plane before takeoff . One was of a son and mom smiling and happy and the other one was a mother and young daughter.

Your story inspired me. PTSD. Prior negative childhood & one incident at 20 changed me. Though I loved my career in child welfare, my being suffered throughout as I wasn't able to share my trauma until later in life. Not until I was 50. I am now 71. I cried, and cried. It is not love that comes from the Netherlands, but except for direct complicity in this crime, because the blown-up Malaysian Boeing 777-200ER 9M-MRD flight MH 17 took off from Schiphol airport, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, lies, falsification and concealment as part of a joint operation under a false flag of the special services of the West and Ukraine, the operation Double Northwoods MH 17 double on lies, because who did it and how it was done is a lie. And it is possible to double the damage if the information about flight MH 370 is confirmed. So very heartbreaking. One of my son's was shot in the face and died instantly on Fathers Day coming up five years ago. After a few weeks it was just me and my grandson whom I raised...and who is doing fantastic as he soon will go to college. The death of my son stays with me, but by moving to a far away place, and getting into art and planting, I find peace. Friends are far away now and some are friends still, just not close as before. My husband passed away from cancer in 2007 but I remarried last year and that is a nice change. Waited for grandson to be grown first before having a relationship like this. It is moving forward, but also always keeping my late son close to me in my heart and with fond memories. Sympathy and advice, no matter how well meant, just turns me away. I found peace...and that is a good thing. God bless this amazing man and woman because moving on is no small thing. It is so good that they move forward, too!❤
