I saw this fight live on TV and even remembered back then and I've seen it 10 times since the lack of game plan that cuevas had it's a death wish to stay out that distance from hearns he had to get inside even if it was ugly getting inside and hold on to him and rough them up and he can't stay out at the end of those punches it's just murder out there and you saw what happened hearns completely had his way with an 11 title defense champion with 10 knockouts that's saying something

Easier said than done, obviously Tommys proding jab kept him at bay and Tommy hit so hard it reset everyone. This can be proven by the fact that Roberto Duran the greatest in-fighter to ever live, could not even get in on Tommy. That goes to show that only otherworldly boxing skill, the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard could produce and just otherworldly Toughness and mettle the likes of The Marvelous one Marvelous Marvin Hagler possessed, were the only way to defeat Hearns, it took literally the greatest middleweight ever/All Time Great and one of the greatest p4p ever to figure out how to beat Hearns , other than those two guys Hearns is unstoppable really lmao

Hearns would waltz through today's welterweight division. Cuevas was over matched from the beginning to the end of this fight. One problem though that Cuevas had for this short fight was his shoes which constantly slipped and slid the entire 2 rounds. Cuevas also didn't have enough head movement, he didn't try to work inside to smother Tommy's punches, nor could he take advantage of the fact that Tommy frequently would admire his work after big punches. At the weigh in, held in Detroit's Hart Plaza, about noon, Cuevas came in with a little Mexican band, that played music. As Pipino was weighing in the the band played on, Tommy grabs the mike and says "The only belt you are going to leave Detroit with, is the one holding up your pants"! And I was at a party with my parents playing music for them from the radio, and the announcer comes on and gives the announcement. I gave it, and it STOPPED THE PARTY! But the true greatness of those men back then, is that even after the brutal defeat, HEARNS AND CUEVAS became friends, and was even invited to have dinner at Cuevas home years later! And that was the FIRST FIGHT ever held in the Joe Louis Arena, and ironically Thomas the Hitman Hearns, ended his boxing career in that same arena, in a upset, injury filled fight, that some bum won, due to a broken ankle of the Hitman! IT WAS A NEAR RIOT, complete with thrown shoes and cell phones. NO MEDIA, has ever reported that, but I WAS THERE to see it and get trapped in it! WHAT AN ERA!

Yup, you nailed it. Not necessarily size although that was an advantage for Hearns but the style of Cuevas played into the hands of Hearns. With more movement he could have offset the reach advantage. I've always believed that a Duran-Hearns 2 would have been a much more interesting match because now Duran knew what he was facing and he was a much better slipper and weaver than Cuevas who was a real stand-up boxer. With Barkley and to a lesser extent - Hagler, Duran showed how to get inside and exchange. In the bout with Hearns, he got hypnotized by that the jab and simply didn't adapt yet he did have the style to get around it and the chin too

@CARL MOBLEY People who have never laced up the gloves, see boxing in their image. You go out and fight! Simple. Mayweather is a master of the science of boxing and with all that natural talent, he can maximize his efforts and minimize his risks. Not many boxers can do that. If he had the power of a big time hitter, say Hearns or even Leonard, he would have been outrageous and he would have taken more risks because even boxers like to smash their opponents. He didn't have that but he had so much speed, agility, quickness and boxing skill that he didn't need it to beat just about anybody from any period in boxing. No, I'm not one of those Mayweather boxing fan but I'm a student of the sweet science and I know a brilliant boxer when I see one and Mayweather it that guy which is why he's undefeated

Cuevas won the welter title with a 2nd rd ko. Then he won 11 of 12 defenses by KO or stoppage. Based on that resume and history he should have come at Hearns banging instead he tried moving away and boxing the worst possible strategy. I guess he was beat before he entered the ring. We could also ask why Cuevas who was champion was fighting Hearns in Detroit. That was a mistake also.

I think Thomas Hearns is the most underrated boxer. His two losses in his heyday were the two greatest fights. His first loss against Leonard, the ref stopped it too quick. Loss against Hagler was an all out war.

Cuevas has one of the most peculiar records I have ever seen. He was 15-6 going into his world title fight with Angel Espada. After winning the title he went 12-0 before losing to Hearns which his record then went to 8-8. His championship years are something of an anomaly going on his win to loss ratios before and after winning the title.

@MisterNifty Well, Hearns won Leonard 2. He made the opponents scared because of the right, so he could keep using the reach. And that 'flicker' jab is hard to slip and duck. Remember, Hearns' reach is good so an overhand right might not make it close enough.
@KeithFroehlich072 жыл бұрын
The fact that Sugar Ray Leonard had two judges score the second fight a draw and give him a decision was criminal. Leonard did nothing except try to steal rounds like he did against Hagler. Thomas should have went over there and given the two judges a right hand for good measure. The worst decision I've ever seen other than Larry Holmes vs Michael Spinks II
@joedanache79704 жыл бұрын
Hearns was a great fighter. His main advantages over most of his opponents was that he was much taller, had a longer reach, and was fast with his fists. His weakness was that he could not take a hard punch (Hearns-Hagler) and depended too much on his KO power to win fights. I've seen most of the "Hit Mans" fights.
@keithkwas82233 жыл бұрын
Also, he broke his right hand against Hagler.
