You're education on all these videos are very much appreciated!! will be watching more of your videos! Always wondered -- do you find this to be a niche area of a business in town's? there's a dime a dozen of "photographers" but these type of dramatic photos seem to set you apart. Live in a heavily populated semi-pro photographer area and a lot of mom's just taking misc senior photos.
@MattHernandez2 ай бұрын
Yes and it’s a great niche to be in! Knowing lighting and specifically off really sets you apart from soccer moms that just buy and expensive camera and use auto with natural light haha.

Thanks for this. Is there an off camera light for small budget beginners you recommend? I’d like to try some of this. Second question, figure skating team portrait? Ice rinks are a tough venue, advice?
@MattHernandez Жыл бұрын
I’ll make a video on that! How small of a budget are we talking? I’ve actually never shot on ice except frozen ponds or snow, but they give you a lot of fill and ambient so you need power to compensate if you want to underexpose.
@melyndamunden4916 Жыл бұрын
I have not bought anything yet. Mom budget. I have a decent Nikon (more than hobby entry level I so can up out my screen) was thinking of getting their HSS off camera flash to start. Or maybe renting lights.

I always learn something new from you. Is there a reason or am I doing something wrong that I cannot go past 1/250s. When my strobe is on it does not let me get to 1/5000s?
@MattHernandez Жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to tell me that! What type of strobe do you have? Not all strobes have HSS built in, which allows you to raise the shutter speed past the normal max sync speed. With my FJ400s I have to turn it on with my remote on my camera.

Hi Matt - great video. Always learn something. Any chance you would do hockey portraits? Having trouble coming up with ideas other than the locker room ones I stole from your old Westcott videos.
@MattHernandez Жыл бұрын
I’m glad my old videos helped 🤣 We don’t have hockey in my area unfortunately and I’ve never actually shot it. If I were to shoot hockey portraits, the first thing I would want to try would be using flash duration to freeze action and have a player skate at me and stop abruptly to throw ice shavings towards the lens.
@mikegraham2477 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt - appreciate the reply. Will give that a go.

Hey Matt, or any seasoned photographer. Why wouldnt not bump the aperture up to F10 or f11 and keep your shutter speed lower so you didn't have to use HighSpeed Sync?
@MattHernandezАй бұрын
Because I wanted a shallow DOF. To me that just looks better in most cases. Gives separation from the background.

At 5:50? the boy is getting ready to hold the ball and then turns it around specifically to show the writing on the ball. Kids always do that every time so I specifically make the kids turn the writing away because I don't want anything to read when I look at the picture to take my focus away from their face.

I don’t think that would work because it wouldn’t be powerful enough to keep up with the 400s if it were that tiny.

It looks like your lights are not pointed directly at your son. Is this the case? Are you just trying to catch the edge of the light on him?
