I caught a flat or shovelhead when I was 10 or 11, that was a little over 32 pounds in Lake Rudy, Sunman In. I caught it on a sears open bale light weight with six pound test mono. It took me nearly an hour to bring it in with my Dad cheering me on. It was a big deal to me and even now at the age of 72, I can still feel its fight.

Originally from south Texas were we used to catch huge common carp. Move to Kansas and the people here through them out of the lake. I like catching carp for food, they are really good. Fishing with friends one day and I caught a 30 Inch or so and kept him. They thought I was crazy when I cleaned it to eat. I served it first no one the wiser. Evening camp fire I asked everyone if they enjoyed dinner, all said yes and how good it was. Wait till I cook the bass tomorrow, the look on there faces was priceless.

I will always fish for them because they fight much harder than catfish. I will not have any issue eating them, or use them as bait. Dont care for those who hate them, dont care for them who'd have heart attack hearing about eating/using as bait. Lastly, its your fish. Do what you please. Thats my motto.

One of the best fights I ever had was out on a pier at the bay during the middle of the night. Half and hour of raising the rod and trying to gain line. Finally I got it up to the pier and it turned out to be a 12' 2x6 floating in the incoming tide. My wife at the time my girlfriend had never been fishing so I took her to a quiet cove on a nearby lake. Anchored and pulled out some dead shrimp. Showed her how to bait a hook and how to toss out the bait. I swear you tossed the bait out and had to hold on to the rod. Every cast was an instant strike and you didn't need to set the hook, just reel. The next day she said to me, I don't know why people say fishing is so difficult. I didn't have the heart to tell her it was a one off night.

I was in a carp fishing club here in California years ago and more than half the members were Europeans. You weren’t allowed in the club if you were a “meat eater” a meat eater is someone who eats carp. These guys would act like harming a carp was the worst sin on the planet. I picked up the mentality too for a while there and still kind of have it 😅 Of course there is a big difference between carp fishing here and carp fishing in Europe. In Europe they stock carp and selectively breed them specifically to grow large for catch and release purposes, beautiful perfect linear mirror carp, leather carp, extremely large common carp with that dinner plate body shape. Here in the states not many people even fish for them. Europeans actually relocate to the states specifically for the untapped carp fishing especially in the Saint Lawrence River. All these lakes in California are drying up and I want to move out of the state because the carp fishing has gone downhill so bad. Not only that but chumming in California is illegal and a $1000 fine. I’ve almost been busted a few times. I don’t bother doing that anymore. Growing up I watched all those fishing shows on TNN, in fisherman, Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston etc. They always practiced catch and release. In fisherman and Bill Dance had a few episodes where they went carp fishing. They practiced catch and release so I never had an idea of carp being a “trash fish” or invasive.

I suck at fishing. I have no idea what’s on the bottom of the Tennessee river that I go to but I assume it’s probably rocky.. . Any tips at catching cats in a possibly rocky river bottom ? I’ve tried different stink baits from Walmart, liver, and last time I was out I tried shrimp but still can’t even get a bite

Nightcrawlers work really well for all fish. Lob some out with egg sinkers. All different kinds. Jig heads with worms on bobbers. Use a single egg hook and a worm and a tiny split shot. All depends on the water current and how strong it is. Rocky botton areas you gotta accept you will loose alot of money snagging up lures. Panther martin spinners are great for trout in rivers here in the PNW. No catfish live here in rivers on the Westside of WA where i live though. Just in lakes

Catching Flathead on cut bait in the daytime! Pretty good. I won't even go fishing for them unless I have live bait.

We go crick and river catfishing alot here in Indiana with just a few worms . Our waters are full of carp and suckers so it never takes long to turn a couple worms into several pounds of cut bait !!! P.S. I am definitely not above eating an early spring , cold water carp !!!!

In the Uk our waters are tiny and not as abundant in comparison to what you have in the states. You take big or medium carp for the table it’d soon empty our lakes and ponds of one of our biggest growing species. That’s why when caught the fish is treated with respect, if wounded gets medicated. Photographed and returned to be caught another day @ hopefully a bigger size. Some of the big carp have actually been named and some anglers spend years targeting that one named fish!

You mentioned smoking carp, I've had them fried and I thought it was pretty good. Keep 'em coming.
