went through the same thing--rarely drew during the pandemic; might've scribbled something every few months--only 3 weeks ago have i found my creativity again enough to draw in my sketchbook daily, and it's been so great and liberating for me :D

if you like square sketchbooks id recommend the ohuhu marker pad actually! it's got really smooth paper, and I know that can be a minus, but the pages are serrated so if you want them to be stand alone pieces you can tear them out with ease without undoing the binding of the paper, and its pretty versatile for the mediums it can take, plus its helllaaaa cheap compared to the illo yet relatively dense in paper count!

A square sketchbook that I like is the articka sketchbook. It is the size of the Illo but the paper isn’t super super smooth like the illo the paper in the articka is smooth yes but it does have a little more tooth than a illo. If you’re interested :)

I've heard lots of good things about it in terms of being a mixed media sketchbook--if you end up getting it, just keep in mind that the paper is really smooth since I know you prefer textured paper. And yes! Another sketchbook swap would be lovely....but first I have to somehow get through all these sketchbooks I've been accumulating x'D

Hey! About The square sketchbook- I saw people recommending the Ohuhu marker sketchbook as a replacement of the illo. Maybe you could try that one out and review it? It's on the smoother side, so I dont know if you'll like it, but the paper seems a little better in terms of quality.

square sketchbooks are the best! i refuse to use any other size xD maybe you will like the illo sketchbook better if you work in two at once, and the other one has textured paper? cause i know you like that, but imo smooth paper is really nice for colored pencil sketches and copics so maybe it would be beneficial to have smooth and textured. i have my illo and then i have my watercolor ones i made with bookbinding, so that is for watercolor, ink, and gouache, could even do acrylic in there. then i use illo for sketching and copics and lil doodles and stuff . i know you say you have multiple sketchbooks already xD but maybe cutting it down to two or three. anyways your art is amazing woooooo

I love your sketchbook tours, they’re so inspiring! I think it’s totally cool to have pages and pages of messy sketches or multiple sketchbooks. I feel like we tend to get really obsessed with the idea of filling up a sketchbook instead of how much we’re actually drawing. Like if you happen to fill three sketchbooks one after the other in a year or work on three at the same time and finish them in a year, it’s still the same amount of art. I’m sorry for the rant, I’m sure you already knew all that lol. If you’re looking for a square sketchbook other than the illo sketchbook, Stillman and Birn makes square sketchbooks which might be nice if you end up liking that paper

yes yes I completely agree!! I personally get a big mental boost to create more art whenever I do finish a sketchbook, so I personally really enjoy working on one at a time so I finish them faster! but either way, making art in general is the main point and what really matters 💖 and thank you for the recommendation! I've only tried one S&B paper type before, but I have 2 more kinds waiting to be used so I'm excited to give them a shot!
