The run at 16 mins, he's using a technique and its not too hard to learn. You kind of sweep from the B to E on the 18th and 15th frets, and then move it down to 13 and 10th. It's V V ^ V ^ ^ V with the first and last two notes at quarter notes and the middle three are triplets. It's a really cool technique I hadn't seen before. Also, love your reaction to how effortlessly Syn plays the sweeping run live haha.

Good job, I know that for City of Evil, as much as I love Syn, back then they would punch in solos and do section by section. That’s why it sounded very tightish.

I think Syn has admitted that a lot of his solos in this era were punched together so that explains a lot.

Absolutely haha. I think all solos on studio albums are punched together to some degree - man, id be shocked if Nobody's solo is one take. His live performances, while still impressive, don't really suggest that it was one take on the album!

in that video of him practicing the solo hes actually playing it much differently than the studio version just fyi. If you learn that version and try to play along with the recording its not going to sound the same

Oh really, much differently? I played the isolated solo and the practice vid side by side and didn't hear anything meaningful- he may have added an extra note to the first sweep live, and missed a couple too. The harmonised part in the shred section is slightly different - he's taking more of a lead live rather than relying on Zacky - but that didn't feel important to note, as anyone playing along solo would likely prefer the practice version for that part. I couldn't find any city of evil recordings to see any differences - any pointers on what they are?

@KarzGuitar nah it's not much different but with Syn he plays things differently live over the years. It's expected because he has so many solos so sometimes its been quite some time so he needs to relearn them by ear. Yeah the first sweep is definitely different than the recording. Also the second sweep. He definitely adds extra notes in some of the lines. Overall yeah it's different but not drastically different. I'm just pointing that out. I've learned the solo note for note as it's on the studio recording so I'm very familiar with it. You did a great job though breaking down the practice version. I like both versions.

What is wrong with the "no one would ever play it this way" at 1:08? It all fits in one hand position with no shifts, sweep pick three notes twice followed by some trem picking on the high E? It seems fine to me... That isn't to say the tabs are good, I just don't get why that measure specifically is flagged.

It's a fair question! I should clarify that its about playing *that part* of the song that way - the passage itself is perfectly playable, but you wont sound like youre playing that part of MIA without some serious and unintuitive investigation into each note. Let me explain: If you listen to the original solo starting just before 4:57 in the album version, the accenting of the notes like Syn plays it would be super awkward with sweeps. It's not a smooth, consistent sound - using the notation in that tab, the 7g is soft, and the 6b 5e are very harshly staccato. It'd be much closer to imitate it using strict alternate picking, lightly on the 7 and then regularly on the next two, but at that speed it's not very practical. Tabbing like this make the emphasised notes harder to identify, harder to make sense of what you're playing when you play it slowly while learning, and can make doable parts seem impossible to understand and play. To me, it's something that Guitar Pro might make sound OK but a real player, at full speed, would sound rough/amatuer/give an incorrect feel when trying to mimic that section. Also, jumping back from 15-18 whatever to that sweep on 7 is a bit silly. I'm sure it happens, but changing positions like that isn't necessary here. And the 865 bit down isn't correct haha, but that's besides the point

Hahaha. No idea about Hal Leonard, this is the first I'm hearing of them. I learnt firmly off of Ultimate Guitar, powertabs/guitar pro, songsterr and youtube lol - definitely not ideal but hey it's going ok
