Ebert on Miyazaki: I was so fortunate to meet Miyazaki at the 2002 Toronto film festival. I told him I love the "gratuitous motion" in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or sigh, or gaze at a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are. "We have a word for that in Japanese," he said. "It's called 'ma.' Emptiness. It's there intentionally." He clapped his hands three or four times. "The time in between my clapping is 'ma.' If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it's just busyness."
@cordlefhrichter15206 жыл бұрын
I just slow clapped.
@cordlefhrichter15206 жыл бұрын
Did you ever think while writing that, "Four years from now a man in Massachusetts is going to read this and slowly clap his hands four times, and then say to himself, 'oh, that's "ma", cool'"?

Dear Matt and Craig: I bought Prisoners (the one with Hugh Jackman) today and wondered if either of you had seen it? I feel when it came out it kind of flew by under the radar and it is a movie that in my opinion deserved so much more recognition. It was a great character study of how people deal with grief differently, as well as a great mystery thriller.

Two movies that might be perfect for Matt's experiment are The Deer Hunter and Terry Gilliam's Brazil. The dialogue of The Deer Hunter is so realistic that it would take a few watches to really appreciate it and understand some of the scenes that so many things are being said. The only drawback is that the movie is 3 hours long. Brazil is so detailed and surreal that you'd have to watch it 7 nights in a row to catch everything.

While Spirited Away is a better film, Howl's Moving Castle is by far my favorite of his. Those of you who are fans of Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli, or animation itself, should watch Grave of the Fireflies. It is a gut-wrenchingly sad movie directed by Isao Takahata and was theatrically released along with My Neighbor Totoro as sort of a DOUBLE FEATURE. Not many people stayed around after Totoro because of how sad Fireflies was. It is an amazing film about life, loss and family and is a movie I will never forget.

I really enjoyed upstream color. As a vegetarian and organ recipient I was able to follow the story from start to finish. I agree they set it up to seem like a horror film before turning daily life into its own horror. The link between humans and animals in this gave it a depth I haven't seen in other films, and I truly appreciate that. Thanks for giving your take on it! Big fan!

What’s with the “as a” preface? You don’t need to be those things to understand the movie.
@pianoface4 жыл бұрын
@@justincoleman3805 I was speaking about my personal experience and how it hit close to home. Watching the fear in the people because their pig counter parts felt threatened was something you don't see. As a vegetarian I believe animals are sentient beings that feel emotion. I don't agree with people using animals to grow organs to be used for transplant either. Unless you've gone through an organ transplant, you can't relate.

Just rewatched this after 32 yrs and thought for sure it must be based on an Elmore Leonard novel. Close - hardboiled detective writer from earlier era, Charles Wileford. The co-producer could not afford to option the novel so Fred Ward did and also produced the movie (Fresh off that $23m "Henry and June" box office, first NC-17 movie so I guess the screen test for Jennifer was "Disregard the lines. You're gonna have to spread 'em"). Borrows heavily from the 1985 Richard Gere version of Jean Luc-Godard's "Breathless" with its socio-psychopath romance. Rewatching was a time machine. Soft-focus and big hair of the 80s long gone, it's acid-washed jeans, Claudia Schiffer is the Guess model. "Miami Blues" was something you got at Blockbuster then. Jennifer is down to panties 10 min in and I expect it rented millions just for that. Was obsessed w/ Brando at the time and Baldwin came off Brando-esque w/ the dangerous male energy, but without the cool, although some of Baldwin's lines were cool for the time. It almost seems a fable of mass media pop culture society personality disorder, not-too-subtly played out in the scene where he apes famous movie lines; as if he's the empty suit in a postmodern personality disorder tale, and the parody of domestic life the only anchor (or just another act for the stealing)? . But I doubt it was that thought out. Baldwin did some impersonations on set that entertained everyone so they just ran with it as 'fun.' You have to introduce a weirdness to get black comedy right (Lynch, Coen Bros) and this is too breezy, it's more of a burlesque, overly exaggerated but trying a bit too hard to be that. You watch "Miller's Crossing" that same year, it handles that beautifully but without the "twitchiness" Matt noted in Baldwin, but if you were 19 then Baldwin looked cool in those ridiculous shades. The dependable blind black buddy w/ the foldout tapping stick is straight from "Blue Velvet's" hardware store token black man. Florida is, as the late Rush Limbaugh once put it: "God's waiting room." It's where end-of-the-roaders go to die, as in "Midnight Cowboy" and "Scarface." In this movie you can see the bridge from Lynch in the 80s, then we'll get another black comedy violent crime thriller written by some former video rental employee named Quentin Tarantino a couple years later, then "Pulp Fiction." There are medium shots in this where you can see the camera moving side to side. Had it leveled up on all points it might have been very good, but 32 years later, petite Jennifer Jason-Leigh stripping to her panties 10 minutes, hopping on a bed and going "Ok let's go" is still its biggest draw.

I think the body parts lost represent the two main male character's virility and strength, by taking the teeth from the detective, he's taking away his "bite" for himself, etc. Vinegar Pie is a nice example of the relationship's bitterness. As for character depth, it's laid out-front. Their outside is their inside in their own simplicity.

Just watched the new Denis Villeneuve film "Enemy" starring Jake Gyllenhaal. It was excellent, as was the other project they did together "Prisoners". A24 distributed the film. They are a new distribution company, and they are really knocking it out of the park by releasing a lot of great pictures. Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin" was another release of theirs that was amazing. They are also releasing David Michod's new thriller "The Rover" and if it's half as good as his first feature "Animal Kingdom" we are in for a treat. I highly recommend all the films in this comment. and strongly suggest you pay attention to upcoming A24 releases.

@PokerJoker81110 жыл бұрын
I got the same Badlands feel watching this episode. It's a man who just decides to commit these off-beat crimes sort of on impulse, a woman who's likable but really just "there", and the man just eventually attempts something that fails and winds up getting screwed. The crimes don't escalate, there's no real end goal, he's living a life on the foundation of these crimes that, while in no way extravagant, he still cannot maintain. More than anything, it's just a bizarre experience where you go away wondering "Was this film...necessary?". The resolution of the plot has no accomplishment, and it just feels weird as a result.
