What folks may not realize is that this is actually a remake of the old PC computer game Star Wars: Rebellion that came out in the late 90s. I LOVED that game and I think that this board version is a perfect replication of that. This one includes pretty much everything that the computer game had with a much improved building portion. The combat is pretty much the same as the computer game where it is a bit clunky and drawn out, but the battles in the PC game were very decisive and made you think about the forces you sent into battle. The missions and leaders is exactly the same and where the game really shines. I am super happy with this representation and think that a board version is long overdue for what I thought was an epic computer strategy game!!!

Armada and Rebellion are all I need for my SW fix. I'm glad they went the long route instead of going short-time. The experience matters more to me than "how many games can I play this year????" nonsense. Seriously, if I'm having fun, I don't care how long it takes. =) If it takes 2-3 sessions to finish, we will take 2-3 sessions. Just make sure to keep the cats or kiddies away from the table...

David Umstattd Heh heh, not me, but I've heard that excuse used before to slam games with "super ultra long play times!!!" like 2 hours. I understand some people can only play for really short bursts (ie. lunch break, waiting at the DMV, etc) but if space is available, then time can be mitigated. Plus, the first few games will probably blow up the estimated time -- my first Eldritch Horror game went 3 hours. =D

When I saw the name of this game a month or two ago, it immediately brought to mind the old PC game of the same name. That was one of my favorite Star Wars games ever, and I hoped that this would at least capture some semblance of that classic game. Though the game board itself is smaller than I had hoped, it looks and sounds like they got about as close as they could. Can't wait to try this one out, though my gaming group probably won't be up for one of this length. Hope to see a live playthrough of this one at some point.

Star Wars Rebellion the computer game was one of my all time favorite games growing up. I still remember the shock and disbelief I felt when the cinematic began depicting the sabotage and destruction of my death star that I had spent most of the game building and had been decimating rebel fleets. Good to see that even though the depth has been cut in half it still looks amazing. The 2016 game I am most excited for :)

Star Trek's races already are heavily profiled: Federation - diplomatic; Klingons - militaristic; Romulans - stealth; Ferenghi - trade; Cardassians - Exploiters; Dominion - Infiltration; Borg - good in almost everything, but everybody hates them. Star Wars: Rebellion has a strong theme. Game creates stories that one remembers long after the game is played. Narrows escapes, everything hanging on the thread before that thing that turns the situation around. Great game indeed. We just played this one with my co-host who had never played anything else than Hungry Hippos or Monopoly. Dude is huge Star Wars fan. It was a great experience for him and we got some fun, fresh view for our footage.

+David Umstattd Yes, I have already answered this, on this video about 3 times, but a 4th won't hurt. Each side controls space and ground units, in a 3 or 4 player game you would split these units between 2 players and the leaders that go with them. My group of beta testers thought 3 and 4 players was fine, only 1 of us heavily preferred 2 players. So I think the fan base with be split on this issue. But many will be satisfied with this as a 3 to 4 player game, but I am not a big war or miniature game player, yet I liked this game. And while I like Star Wars, I am not a Star Wars freak, I prefer Lord of the Rings for example. This may temper my answer with some understanding of my stance on games.

As a huge War of the Ring fan, I'm glad SW fans are finally getting their due. I can't imagine with all the solid SW games that Fantasy Flight has...that there would be no way of putting them together. So when it's time for an x wing battle, here is your set up. The winner does X and the loser does Y. Same with Armada and Imperial Assault. That would be a win win for everyone.

You could see about implementing this idea with Armada and now either Legion or the old WEG Miniatures Battles (basically better Legion and severely underappreciated). I realize this comment was 7 years ago and thus before Legion upon typing this, but the WEG game is really good for this idea. Given, you'd probably have to spread such a game over multiple days or at least 1 full day.

How would you compare this to Forbidden Stars with two players? The theme of Star Wars Rebellion is MUCH more interesting to me than Warhammer 40K, but the combat system in Forbidden Stars seems a bit more tactical with building a combat deck.

I've seen some playthroughs where the rebel player obviously didn't know anything about how the rebels actually operated and it was pretty ugly to watch. Retreat is your friend.

It really reminds it, but now after watching the review i see it has more of a cat and mouse mechanic and mission. While EaW is more an RTS game with some tactics and missions.

It's Star Wars: Rebellion the expansive PC game fit to board game form, with the important change of having a time limit--original Rebellion sometimes took forever as the other side moved their HQ or important personnel around. I believe nobody yet said that, but now you can have even more complete Star Wars scenery with Rebellion as the main map of it, Imperial Assault dealing with land combats and Armada-X-Wing with space battles. Of course, this would rule out combat rules in Rebellion itself :)

+David Brennan I have played the beta version. A 4 player game splits the roles of ground and space units between 2 players, so 1 player has all ground troops and leaders for example. I quite enjoyed it!

This reminds me of an old war game called 'Freedom in the Galaxy', which honestly, was Star Wars with the name filed off. Star Wars Rebellion, however, seems much easier to play with a tremendously shorter play and setup time, plus really does benefit from having the IP.

PLEASE make an effort to increase the Depth of Field settings on your camera. The constant back/forth from close/far and thus blurry/not gives me a crazy headache (and makes all these things you're showing the camera totally unreadable)

The 2006 "Star Wars Risk: Original Trilogy Edition" had a full galactic map (NOT the 2015 Star Wars Risk, which has some weird looking circular map). It was a 2-5 player game which pitted two Imperial players against two Rebel players against the Hutts/underworld. It's not too bad, but Star Wars Rebellion is WAY better IMO.

Just bought this, it's fairly complex, and it took awhile to work out the rules, also you need a massive table, it's a your gonna need a bigger boat moment with that, but overall it is a superb two player 4x ish space game, which is hard to find.

SPI published (and Avalon Hill later released their own edition after SPI went under) a game called Freedom in the Galaxy. It was *very* obvious it was Star Wars inspired, to the point I'd wonder if they had originally designed a Star Wars game but couldn't get the license. The big focus was going to planets and trying to convince them to side with you. Showing that it was designed shortly after the Vietnam era, there's "Domino Effect" rules -- if a planet joins the Rebellion, a nearby one might become more sympathetic. The character names are... interesting. Supposedly, several are anagrams of the names of SPI employees. And the Empire has a Princess named Thysa Kimbo. (Think about it.) It was all cardboard and paper, of course. And the map was hideous. But it was a serious strategy game that felt Star Wars

And the last one won't play 2 player game unless it's short, cause he doesn't want to play without his wife. Short meaning 1 hour or less. My other friends live more than 2 hours of travel time away, so that's no go too. So yeah, I know why, doesn't change the fact it makes me sad.

+Jeremy Boughton No, because your starting forces on the base are pretty strong and so a random scout force probably wouldn't be strong enough to take it. And if you see an enemy force getting close maybe reinforce or RM your way out of there.

The grindy combat feels grindy because combat is automated using dice. It means it is solved purely by rolling dice, no real decisions aside of assigning damage to a specific ship. With the expansion there is a bit more player decisioning during combat. It is appropriate to have automated combat anyway, because you are the strategist, not the tactical officer. You take care of end game, not the skirmishes.

I think I would have preferred a TI3 like game because this is the coolest game that would never get played : 2 player long game is just not a game I would get anyone to play even if this had more focus on the 4 player aspect would increase times played by a huge margin, long game are always better with more people.
