Thank you guys, so very much. One of the best reviews you all have ever done. This is the type of review that helps people make a decision to spend money on a game they haven't played yet. Bravo! Our first play through of this took maybe 75 minutes. I got dealt 3 tickets that matched well but relied on rail across asia. It was a fatal mistake as its all about building those ocean crossings and building harbours. I also got dealt three cards to build a harbour and never saw the 4th card i needed. Most of the strategy in this game is about denying your opponents and opportunity. Don't play cards with harbour symbols for boat routes, collecting cards for harbours when they appear, save wilds for harbours, which mean they don't reappear often. Also the two decks of cards while OK, I think a better "home rule" is going to be pick a sail card, replace with a sail card and same for rail cards.

In this case Zee is absolutely correct about the amount of "Luck" required in the game. The fact that there are two different sets of cards feeding the draw pile dramatically changes the probability distribution that the players are drawing from. This dramatically changes the underlying math in the game. I also completely with Zee that "gamers" are typically wanting more agency over the game. A more advanced player wants to be able to infer what the games state will be more turns out. This allows for a deeper decision tree. By bifurcating the cards that are required to complete routes the ability for the players to practice any agency over the game is dramatically reduced. The decision tree is much shallower and therefore the amount of "Luck" in the game goes up. Zee nailed it and the math backs him up.

Great debate, great discussion. Love, love the format of the Miami Dice videos, guys. Props to you! Count with me supporting the next kickstarter! :-D p.s. the discussion on the SeaFall pre-review was also incredible. You guys are nailing it. Regarding the game, it's a shame. I'm cancelling my pre-order based on your opinion, and GameBoyGeek's. It's also way, way too expensive - more than I'm willing to pay for a spin-off game.

Lenghty or not, I love this review. You gave us 3 different points of view about a game that was hyped and will probably be very hot in the near future. I think it's important for us viewers to know what we're getting ourself into with that kind of game. This is pretty much why I started watching "The Dice Tower" in the first place: to tell me if the potentially popular, hyped game is any good BEFORE I BUY IT. And this review does exactly that, so two thumbs up from me.

I personally think that when you 3 disagree on a game, the review is way more helpful and insightful. Even if viewers don't agree with one or more viewpoints, the very discussion that happens between the 3 of you coaxes out a more thorough analysis of game mechanics which theoretically helps the viewer more. I'm not enough of a Ticket to Ride player to comment one way or another so the above is a generalization of the review style represented here. The same applies to your Bloodborne and pandemic cthulhu review as even slight differences of opinion illuminate different ways of viewing the same material for the audience.

Including tax, I ended up finding this game at my local game shop for $61 and some change. I have played it twice on thebgreat lakes map with one other person and I feel the game is actually pretty strategic. I did not feel that this game took too long, however the scoring was really high compared to other versions. Can't wait to try it with a 3rd and 4th player. I also did not feel like it was too easy to get blocked. I found that the map had a lot of routes connected to one city more so than other maps. I felt also that I was more worried about my own routes more than blocking others because the hand management is more complex and you are forced to use your cards more strategically.

See, reviews like this are exactly why I like you guys, and also why I like the three-man format of "Miami Dice" over the two-man; Zee, Sam, and Tom are all different gamers with different likes, dislikes, opinions, and preferences - Zee even moreso. Tom and Sam tend to be a bit closer in opinion, so having Zee be a dissenting opinion more often than not gives the review a bit more bite to it, but also that range of opinions.

I feel like Ticket To Ride could use a return train cards or trade train cards option. Whenever you take cards, especially blind, you're stuck with sometimes a lot of useless cards that maybe you want your neighbour to have a chance at having. In general but maybe especially here. Also a clear the faceup cards option could help, especially with this. Then maybe the random is manageable because otherwise you can end up stuck picking blind cards you don't want because no-one wants the faceup cards.

i'll be the first to be annoyed by contrariness in an argument, but sam just fleshes out the perspective here and it's helpful for someone wondering two ides of what a game's like. i think he can nitpick, for sure...but in these extended reviews it actually feels worthwhile bc that's the point, it's not a top 10 or a punchy 10-minute review, it's meant to tease out everything about a game. kudos.

You guys should check out the game Expedite. It seems like a simplified version of this game. You are connecting ports by airplane cards to create routes. You don't have to own all of the connections though, as long as you own the starting connection. (There are specific starting and ending ports on the tickets). If you use another person's port then they will get some of the points of the total amount of the ticket. You can also take ports from other people, at a higher cost than it was originally bought for.

I think re: Zee's point about the pool of cards (i.e. from 6 to 0 potentially) I would immediately houserule it to having two lines of 5 all the time for both trains and ships. Might make the game take less time too.

50-70 minute TTR was already too long with the luck involved.. (I did everything perfectly, got longest route, completed 5 tickets! and lose by 23 points due to someone drawing 4 finished tickets for over freakin 50 points in total, in 2 turns!) Also tickets in TTR are balanced for 4 players+ (lower count makes the luck of the draw even bigger)

I just found out about this version today, and after reading the basics of it, I was excited. A deeper, more involved TTR? Sounds awesome! Out of Zee, Tom, and Sam my tastes usually tend to fall more inline with Zee, so hearing him trash it was pretty crappy, but after hearing Tom say possibly even worse things, and on top of all that having an 80 dollar price tag, I certainly am going to have to skip this one. jeremy phillips Pretty much what everybody was expecting, "gamers' TtR". I wouldn't have mind the length if the card draw felt less unnecessarily convoluted, and the tickets unbalanced. I actually *wanted* more complex mechanisms, but this sounds... too complex for complexity's sake without any added strategy.

Eyal Itsik Okay so you think everyone thinks like you and expected the same thing? You can't really speak for everyone making that statement and expect it to mean anything else so okay, moving on. What you wanted were more complex mechanics, but you didn't really specify what that was. In terms of hand management, this ttr is definitely more complex. I also wish you would specify what you mean between convoluted and complex. Are you sure you knew what you wanted in this game?

I happen to have a 40% off coupon at Half-price books for today and tomorrow only and bought the game new and in the shrinkwrap for $41 out the door ($64 price tag; same as Amazon currently). Since I'm doing things in reverse, I''m only just now watching this review (after buying the game) and couldn't believe they all poo-pooed it, even though the overall ratings on Amazon are a 4.8 stars and a 7.4 on boardgamegeek, which still has me convinced we'll like it. I'm expecting we'll play a couple times with the rules as laid out in the manual, but will quickly house-rule the two decks by feeding that type card back to that row of revealed cards and maybe bump it up to 4 cards per deck, so play goes a lot faster. Board is large, but not HUGE. It is a rectangle measuring 38-inches x 21.5 inches. Looking forward to playing next time I can get family and friends together in a week or so. Worse case scenario for me, is my local gaming store has their bi-annual board game swap meet in about 8-weeks, so I'll recoup my money there when I go to sell my other games. But knowing my wife, she'll really like it and it'll be a keeper for us.

Most of the time, I agree with Zee on games and his reasoning. Not in this case. There is a lot more strategy in this game: more complex hand management, taking more trains or boats, getting routes in order, which pile to draw from--to possibly screw your opponent. Can't wait for this one!
@sexagesimalian
@sexagesimalian 8 жыл бұрын
"Can't wait?" Does that mean you haven't played it? Do you disagree with Tom as well? He made a more detailed case for why luck trumped strategy and seemed to claim that best/only strategy was to concentrate on harbors (and get lucky draws).

I mean, honestly, they can both be correct - luck and skill don't operate as binary, opposing forces. In fact, one could easily argue that this edition has more luck and more strategy, but the delta of luck increased more significantly than the delta of strategy (which seems to be Zee's point). :)

I played this game for the 1st time yesterday. I took the recommended amount of ships (23) and trains (27). We made a mistake of not looking at our tickets before choosing the amount of trains and ships. I kept 3 of my tickets that had routes from New York to Duluth all along the same line. I only used 2 ships to complete my routes and all my trains but 1. I was stuck with a handful of trains that were useless at that point. I managed to build 1 port before the game ended and made a few useless routes with ships. The game was too close to ending for me to draw any more tickets in fear of not finishing the routes. Three of us were 10 points apart for the lead, 2 other players were way behind since it was their first time playing any TTR game. It was a fun game with slightly more decision making than the original TTR game. I would play it again if someone had it, but, I will not be buying this one.

Not that this of course excuses the design choices but: 1) Possibly use fewer starting trains and ships (10-15 less perhaps) 2) Have 2 rows of 4 cards revealed and/or force a duplicate replacement of the same type of face up card taken. That being said, the ship/train ratio choice at the start is a cool mechanic but seems implemented into too random a game to make it a meaningful choice. Production issues are a shame though: Don't disagree with the increased price per se, though it seems a little marked up (415 plastic trains/ships compared to 240 in USA - 70% increase, 4 times as many ticket cards, comparable other components), but what of course kills it is lack of quality control on the production end with the plastic pieces. It's possible a bad production run is to blame, or possibly an Asmodee budget squeeze forcing production to a cheaper manufacturer, but DoW should ideally still step in at the end to some degree (and delay release if necessary) before passing onto the customer. It wouldn't have made the game stand out more (since it appears expected of DoW at this point), but it's certainly preferable to having this be another knock against the game. Though, cynically speaking, from a business point of view it's difficult to argue this case for "another TtR expansion". The route cards seemed a little confusing at first. Wasn't explicitly made clear that the exact destinations on the card had to be linked together between 1&2, 2&3 and so on, and that any other different route taken to connect the cities listed would result in the penalty. The way I interpreted it initially was that you just had to connect those cities together somehow, but in numerical order which didn't make any sense, since how would players be able to keep track of the order they were built without revealing the ticket? Just a bit of a slight gloss over from Tom, but solved easily looking at the rules online. Overall though, seems like one to wait for a [big] sale on. Could use a bit more storage space for other TtR expansions.

On a glance of the board (the world board) and the item management as well as the harbors... I think the UK&Penn map is a better standpoint for price if you want a deeper Ticket to Ride game. And is now on my list. I think the biggest three turn offs: the price (yeah, this is the biggest) i have never seen this discounted below 60, the weird layout on the wrap around, the confusion aspect of the harbors. Really that is where this falls out.

It seems to me a "gamer" version of TtoR rather than just having an additional form of "route" pieces in the form of ships and then with their own deck of cards, they should have added ships in a way that used a different mechanism. Example-- the ships add a pick-up-and-deliver mechanism and you have to move them rather than just build a chain of them, they must connect with your rail lines, etc. What will they do next, TtoR Rails, Sails, and Wings and add airline routes too, with yet another deck of cards and the same mechanism again? Makes no sense-- extends the length of the game with too little new in the way of play mechanics.

The problem is only on the cards, due to the gradient nature of the background colors used. When fully opaque, such as on the routes on the board, the color is definitely purple.

I guess it all boils down to how one personally defines "pink" and/or "purple." The shade in the cards definitely meet my definition of what I consider to be in the "purple" family of colors - because of the aforementioned visible touches of blue. I once, out of curiosity, even scanned-in one of the cards, and then used a color-picker on various points, from the lightest to darkest areas of this background color. At each point, there was a lot of "blue" in the color...far more than would be found in what I would consider to be a shade of "pink." :-)

I spent countless rounds trying to get four black or white boats and ended up ending the game with like 15-20 cards and wasting 10late game rounds.... Which makes it impossible to win had 2x more boat card then figures.... At the end

LOL we just bought this on sale at amazon for 35 bucks. We loved it. However, it's not worth full price. Buy it on sale and it is definitely 2 thumbs up.

I disagree with Tom's view, this really seems to me only as a Ticket to Ride with ships. Way to go Zee.

Well, you didn't like the game as much for the same reasons that Zee mentioned. What I meant was that for Zee this game wasn't much different from the vanilla Ticket to ride and you mentioned this is really different because of the boats, the harbours, etc.

I think he was discussing the differences Zee was making at the beginning of discussion. Where you, Tom, were pointing out how different it was. And Zee was counting them as if they were not important. Or something to this effect.

I like the idea of tickets connecting several cities in order, but the rest of the additional features are a no-go even on paper for me. Will be passing on this one.

As shallow as it is, the garish colours just put me completely off. I agree with Zee, when I heard about it, sure wanted to be excited.. saw the board and just went blurgh? I'm going to look at this for 2 hours, each time i play?

Huge board (not for every table), two decks to manage (even 3 if counting harbors as separate), two components types, which looked similar in the video, complex tickets with huge swings of points. To me almost every new aspect of this game looked like trying to make it unpleasant to play. The board is double sided and there are a bit more pieces and cards, but did the box had to be that big and the price.. Yeah..

It's pretty remarkable how people cancel something like a preordered game based on one review. We purchased our copy at Gen Con and love it. I guess some people just purchase games only based on popularity rather than judging it for themselves first. Sad really.
@emtione

What is sad? I did not play the game so I can't tell whether it's good or bad. It's quite expensive but I can still buy it later if I play it and like it, or see another reviews. By canceling my preorder I didn't lose anything, maybe I saved my money. I always cancel my preorders when I change my mind or some doubts occur whether the product is good or not. That is racional behavior. Maybe you don't care If you buy a game at this price level and don't play it later, but I do.

emtione "Well, it looks like I have to cancel my preorder. :( " You even put a sad emoticon in your own comment. Plus, you said, "It looks like I have to" You didn't have to. You can do more of your own research is all I was saying. People should do a lot more of their own research, it's okay to go online to read and learn for yourself. I agree it is overpriced, but it's not a bad game because of that or because it's longer than the other versions. "By canceling my preorder I didn't lose anything" Well....yeah you did, you lost the game. "maybe I saved my money." There's no maybe about it, by canceling your order you did save money. However, are you even willing to pay 60.00 for this game if it were to drop 20.00 in 4 to 6 months? You seem very disappointed about a game based on this video. "Maybe you don't care If you buy a game at this price level and don't play it later, but I do." Don't get emotional. It'll cloud your judgment. We've also played this numerous times and will be reviewing it on our board gaming blog this weekend. Yes, it's not perfect, yes it's more expensive, but it's still a good game. Your sad face emoticon that you posted on your comment, indicated that you were unhappy to cancel your pre-order. If you were perfectly fine with canceling your order, I'm not sure why you included an indication of feeling bad about doing it. Isn't that logical?

I have to disagree with Sam on this one. This version is all about the luck of draw far far more then strategy.
@Steve-L
@Steve-L 8 жыл бұрын
I understand Sam's point on mitigating hand management as a type of strategy. I am not a Ticket to Ride fan, mostly because I burned myself on playing solo against the Xbox 360. But I have played the board game with real people instead of the computer. Because I learned and played the original on the Xbox, if things went sour and unlucky I would restart the game. You can't do that with people. And eventually I did this less and less as I learned to strategize my hand. And then when I finally played real people I won. I think I have played Ticket to Ride only 4 times with real people, and won 3 of those. This is because I found a way to manage my hand with strategy. It is true there is an element of luck that can occur, on a rare occasion, as Sam said, but there is a strong ability in most games to manage that. I have not played this version, and because I am burned out, I will not be rushing to do so.
