Well, people, I have nearly 70 games in collection, from Carcassonne to Great Western Trail, but we play Luxor the most last time. It is the best game to RELAX in our collection, we just love it. So I just can not agree with that "average" thing. It is really really great family game
@Valcurdra6 жыл бұрын
Shame DT felt this was a bit dated, I would have used the term classic. Game has a familiar nostalgic feel, with a couple on nice little modern twists, easy to learn and play, accessible and fun for a wide audience. Definitely a game for me and my family.

I like this one. They seem to be implying that "luck of the draw" plays a strong role in this game. It doesn't. You all start with the same cards and build your hand. The luck, just like in a game like Dominion, is very minimal. you know how the hand management mechanism is going to work. If someone "swoops in" and gets something you wanted, you simply didn't play optimally. It's certainly a light family game, but it offers interesting choices in a very approachable game.
@adamholt53953 жыл бұрын
I disagree with this. Everyone doesn't start with the same hand of cards. We are giving random starting hands off of the top of the deck. If I get more 4s and 5s than a player who got 1s and 2s then I will get further into the temple and can move my adventurers faster and score more points in the end. There's not a way to mitigate this in the base game. If you can't select Horus cards you will have to draw from the main deck which you could get stuck with a bunch of lower cards.
@DuGStp3 жыл бұрын
@@adamholt5395 So then you are going slow and getting more stuff for the set collection. And you can utilize the tunnels once they show up so you don't lose lots of points for being near the start. Sure there is some luck, and how much luck you want in a game is up to you.

I'm really hoping the Queenie expansions add a bit more crunch to this game. I played it at BGG Spring and it definitely felt just decent/average. It was fun, I just wanted more.

So Cartagena is also often described as Candyland for gamers. Would love to hear or see a Dice Tower Showdown between the two games.

Hardcore gamers are definitely not the target for this game. This is a light family game. Our girls (12 and 6) enjoyed this game quite a bit (so much so I jumped in to the kickstarter at the last minute). Rebecca and I liked it but it is not something I would pull out for experienced gamers. But for a family or as a gateway game, this works and works well.

I feel like board game ratings are getting inflated. Zee has the right idea. Well produced, but pretty boring so he gave it a 5. Tom and Sam didn't have many good things to say about it but disagreed with Zee's 5? Candyland for adults is a 7.5? It feels like if a game isn't total garbage they are a bit afraid to give it a lower score. Just my opinion.
@thedicetower6 жыл бұрын
Meh, I give games the same ratings I always have. I enjoyed it, more than I thought! But I didn't give it a 7.5 anyway.
@rabidpickle6 жыл бұрын
Just something I've noticed lately, not just with the Dice Tower. I'm also into video games and if a game has an average rating of 70/100 its considered pretty bad. 70 should be pretty good! But when it comes down to it the number doesn't mean much. I watch for your guys' thoughts WAY more than a number rating. I'm a big fan of the Dice Tower.
@BrandonGraham6 жыл бұрын
I always think of ratings like grades. 70 is good. 80 is very good. 90 is great. 60 is passable. The rest is various amounts of just how bad it is. A rating of 7 or 7.5 of this game seems acceptable because they put it in the reference frame of light family game. It is a good light family game that they did not hate, but it is not for everyone. If you told me that it was a 5/10, I would think it was a bad game and would never give it a second look.
@searose61925 жыл бұрын
I suppose if the “1 to 10” scale is thought of as a “-5 to +5 “ with Zee’s 5 being minimally acceptable and anything below that being negative/underwater, the Zee saying meh, and the other two giving essentially +2.5 makes sense as “Candyland for adults”... That’s the way i think of it anyway 👍🏻😉

While most of this seems reasonable, are we really giving a game negative points because it has standard set collection mechanisms now?
@jaredbellingar82836 жыл бұрын
Corey Batten Yes, when the game is being discussed because of its nomination for an award where the first criteria is the following, "Does it have a completly new concept or does it bring existing elements together to create a new experience?"
@PandaOfElastic6 жыл бұрын
@Jared Bell But it DOES have a new concept. They talk about it in length throughout the review. Whether or not it brings together existing concepts to create a new experience is completely subjective. My point is, since when do we knock games just because they utilize tried and true mechanics? Sure, they should have something unique about them, but not EVERYTHING needs to be fresh and original.
@IJJusion6 жыл бұрын
This is their opinions on it - personally I find this kind of set collection very boring and would rate a game lower for it, but that's my view on set collection. The Dice Tower are not the board game council who deem whats worth playing and what isn't.

Tried and true doesn't always go hand in hand with unoriginal and uncreative but in this case it does.

@mrmaybe79 What? Tired and true literally means it's been done many times before and has been shown to work. How would that not always be "unoriginal"?

As German, who is at least watching 1h per day Boardgame KZbinrs, including some german ones: No one had this game on the list and no one think that it has a chance against the other 2 games. The Mind and Azul have the stamina to stay alive for some years in the boardgame environment.

I played it once and I agree with Tom that I would give it a 7 or 7.5, it's a pretty good family game with beautiful production. Can't be compared with "Azul" because Azul is more like "Sagrada" I even like Sagrada better than Azul, more meat.

@josiahdavoli51576 жыл бұрын
I just watched the dice tower seals explained again, and I was wrong, it is 7-8 for approved seal, I don't understand Tom would even rate it a 7, if he just thinks the game is average however.
@argel12006 жыл бұрын
It probably got more flack from them because it didn't feel worthy of the nomination. Without that to taint it, it may have ended up with a 7 (e.g. the card mechanism). Similar to how The Mind didn't live up to the hype for them. They may not have known that several better games were rejected due to horribly written rules -- that would have lowered expectations.

I like Tom Vasel because he goes straight to what we want to know and specially because he seems to be very honest. So I thought of a boring game to test him. And here it is, he and his also very cool friends CRUSH Luxor as it deserves. 😂 Good job!

I don't think the take that aspect will effect it. Like Sorry it doesn't make people angry. It may be 'unkind' but that doesn't mean people will avoid it. So many classic games do that it will probably not matter.

Napoleon shot a cannonball at the nose of the sphynx or so the legened goes...
@markusschmidt92606 жыл бұрын
Legend is the right word for that, or rather unfounded and ridiculous myth. Also easy to refute, as there are renderings of the Sphinx without nose predating Napoleon's birth and he himself was quite an Egyptologic buff, who was accompanied by a huge number of archaeologists and other scientists during his Egypt campaign.

I dont think so. It has a stupid way of moving and one of them is roll for move... the VP mecanism is kind boring and the only thing thats actually something is the choice mecanism (cards from both left or right). And even it, for me, its boring...
