Miami's Rapid Transit is terribly small. Suburbs radiate out west from downtown with only city buses. Traffic clogs every roadway. There should be at least 6 more lines running east and west. There should be a major line running from the Dolphin mall to Miami beach. It could stop at the airport, the arts district, the children's museum and then the beach. Perfect for moving commuters and tourists

I often forget Miami has a heavy and light rail system. The MetroMover is a very clever concept to compliment the Metrorail (and it's free!). I know Miami is working to expand their commuter rail system but I wonder if they plan on expanding the Metrorail system. I also think Miami is one of the only US cities that built a heavy rail system in the late 20th century (along with DC and LA). Love your videos! It's so interesting to see the history behind these transit programs

They have been planning to expand the Metrorail system from its inception, but lack of ridership meeting initial projected targets, political will, and money have prevented any meaningful expansion. Wikipeodia has the main history online, and there a some other blogs here and there that talk about it. Also, Baltimore and the Bay area built late 20th century heavy rail systems as well as Atlanta. Fun fact the Baltimore Metro uses the same Budd Cars as the Miami Metrorail. They saved money on the order because both places ordered the same car, and that was the last order before Budd went out of business. Since then, Miami has been upgrading their fleet to Hitachi actually made in Miami area in a new Hitachi plant, and Baltimore still uses the Budd cars.

In November of 2021, Brightline plans to restart service between West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. Brightline is also building new commuter stops in Aventura and Boca Raton. Don't forget Amtrak also services Miami with a stop next to but not connected to the Metro-Rail/Tri-Rail transfer station in Hialeah. Amtrak also stops in Hollywood, Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

I should add, Amtrak was supposed to stop at the Miami Intermodal Center with Tri-Rail and Metro- Rail all in the same building. However, someone did not notice that the Amtrak trains are too long for the new station and end up blocking a nearby highway. So the Millions of dollars spent building that part of the Intermodal Center was wasted since Amtrak can not use the new platform.

What about the famous screw up at the new Miami Airport station that has stopped Amtrak from being able to use it? Someone didn't get the right measurement of an Amtrak train thus when Amtrak pulls in, it would block the street beside the airport for over half an hour. This time is needed to detrain passengers, luggage, and supplies. If someone had paid attention, the platform would be in the correct place and the road moved over.

I’ve rode the Tri-rail to MIA several times. The problem is frequency and grade crossings and old heavily polluting locomotives that are frequently slicing cars in half and expensive upkeep. Speed between stations is good but frequency is nearly every half hour during peak and every hour off peak and weekends.
@Meeshusa
@Meeshusa 8 ай бұрын
It's much worse now. Brightline now flies thru on old freight tracks all at grade in the most dense area of the FL hitting everything on it's way. Same heavy smoke and noise pollution with smell of diesel and horn blaring alternating with sounds and smells of smashed vehicles and pedestrians. Now Tri-rial will join on the fun thru this section of residential downtown Miami too. Brightline in Miami area is already the deadliest rail line in the history of the US.
@SetiPrime
@SetiPrime 6 ай бұрын
@@Meeshusa You make it sound like is their problem and that anything can be done. The grade crossing issue you presented cannot be fixed, the clearance to make bridges and tunnels for roadways in miami is now non existent, the crossings will remain. Cars getting smashed is the idiocy and impatience of the drivers in Florida. If you've ever looked at any videos especially those taken here of cars getting hit the car is always the problem, so much so Brightline is confident enough to release the recordings of them. Brightline uses the best diesels you're going to get, SC42 Siemen Chargers, and are extremely quiet, take that from some1 whos not only ridden on them but has seen them trackside, can't hear them coming, only way to know is by seeing those signals light up. The tracks aren't old, many of brightines tracks are actually fairly new being constructed a little over a year ago, the oldest ones being in Miami which get replaced as needed. When Brightine was announced FECR, or Florida East Coast Railroad, replaced almost all the tracks Brightline would be running and those that weren't were because they were in good enough condition, their already were concrete tied, and have been since before the 70s. What horns are you talking about? Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm, and surrounding areas are ALL quiet zones. They don't honk for crossings. Only places which are not would be from Hollywood to MIA INT station, and this doesn't apply to Brightline, they are truly all quiet zones.
@SetiPrime
@SetiPrime 6 ай бұрын
The pollution output of a Tri Rail train shouldn't be problem when you consider that if all the passengers in at least 1 car of a 3 car consist were using cars instead would pollute much more. The oldest engines on Tri Rail today are going to leave the system soon, those being the the GP49s which i covered on my channel. The freq on Tri Rail is good when you consider is a 70+ mile line, to increase freq the amount of trains to be added would be so costly it wouldn't make sense for even a 10 minute increase. Nor does Tri Rail have the road power (locos) and passenger cars for that anyway. Tri Rail feq is very good for what they have, their roadpower position is also good having rebuilt their old F40PH-2C into 3C standards and having newer BL36PHs.

@@dsti-xi7dl The reason DART rail ridership is a failure is because Dart gamble on aligning rails along the freeways to suburbs instead of planing rail in areas where the people actually needed it. The green line park and ride lots are 75 percent empty most of the time with the exception of the end of the line park and ride. Dart expected a lot of commuters from the freeway but that didn't happen. Dallas County has more than 2.5 million residences and Dart rail has 90mile of track. Miami has a huge flaw that you may not see in the map, and that is that a very large population that makes up a good amount of Dade county's population, is all to the west of Dadeland south. Metrorail has always had a huge potential, still does, but only if one is to be forward thinking and bring either light rail or heavy rail to areas west of the 826. Even the Busway to FL city was a cheap way out of extending Metrorail. The amount of money that is wasted on expanding the expressways has now eclipsed the price tag of any heavy or light rail line expansion. Since I was in JR HS, the 836, 826, I-95, etc... have gone through constant expansions at ridiculously high costs, and do nothing to eliminate traffic, lower the number of accidents, and help the environment. Even Tri-Rail and Brightline all fall short of serving a very heavily populated area to the west that in reality could be considered the suburbs of Miami. Like wise, anyone who lives in Miami will tell you, most jobs are NOT in the downtown area. Many are located in the Doral, Medley, Miami Lakes, and Miami Springs area. Metrorail does not connect people who live west of the 826 or Turnpike, and ends too far to serve most of the areas mentioned above where much of the warehouse sector, manufacturing, and trade takes place.

The sad part is that they should have finished the rail to go past MIA and loop around through 137 ave and connect to Kendall, to which they could have looped back to Dadeland exit. The traffic in Kendall is awful, too many residents trying to go North. If a transit authority is reading this, please fix this absurd problem, ten years of traffic woes. I had to move north to get away, and to this day to get from 137 to 117, in Kendall, it takes 30-40 mins. It's incredible the amount of corruption involved in the state and local government, the sunpass money that y'all have, where does it all go? Because it's not toward creating better transportation alternatives, we just see the same construction for over 15 years, bottlenecking highways and roads. Coming from nyc so I have authority on this subject. since we have been using mass transit for hundreds of years. I think if the people made more money. then by now it would of reached every location. The bottom line is you cant expand without money and Miami people there salaries do not generate enough money For services just the way it is 80 percent of the people in Miami Make 35 k.... So it does what it can. I'm very satisfied with it.

What happened to the long promised, North Corridor. That was go up 27th Avenue, to Dolphins football stadium. Continuing up, to the Broward County line. It's been over, 25 years now. And there's NEVER, any more discussion. About whether, it'll ever be done. But it was to be the reward for Black support, for the half cent sales tax. That has funded most of the newer, metro train routes.

@shechshire 11 ай бұрын
The same thing that happened to the Homestead extension. Too much conflict between political interests & more importantly NO MONEY. The half cent tax money was stolen by the corrupt Miami mayor of that time. A line to the Hard Rock stadium is a fantastic idea that would generate so much revenue that it would pay for its self, at the same time giving Maimi Dade College North Campus a station.

This is a weird question but do you think you will ever do evolution of fictional metros at some point (If they have a backstory). For example, the evolution of a metro system in a video game.

They SHOULD expand Metrorail ASAP. Their transit system is still not at its full potential. We need at least a Metrorail along Flagler or SW 8th Street and one servicing the NW Miami - Dade community. And this is coming from a New Yorker

I think I like the idea what they going to do the new Transit way and as far as they doing it as much as they can it's time they getting it just in time for the revolution of the new Transit way and as far as I'm concerned it's going to be a great one and once they finished the new Transit way everybody will be riding on the Transit way and their buses and as far as they doing as much as they can the future is about to begin and starting new Transit way.

As a tourist in Miami I found no elements of the public transport on offer in any way useful. The metromover looked like a Buck Rogers set and would be easily replicated with buses and bus lanes

I detest the South Dade Busway. They paved over railroad tracks (almost as if they didn't learn a damned thing from the death of the streetcars) to build a new road parallel to and mere yards from US-1 that crosses EVERY single intersecting road AT GRADE and adds another set of traffic signals and signage to clutter the visual landscape and confuse the drivers within it. Considering that this part of the region is designated a high-growth area, they should have planned to continue MetroRail along this corridor from the start and skipped the whole BRT money bonfire (the best use of old railroad rights of way in urban environments is to implement NEW rail transit). On the bright side (NOT a Brightline pun), at least it can be considered a rail bank and later up-converted to MetroRail with a simultaneous extension of the Underline linear hike-and-bike park.
