Wait. Three Flamingos? I always considered this a powerful episode. The ending alone left me reeling. I also thought this was the beginning of Crockett's downward spiral. He let Hackman manipulate him and now, he realizes he was responsible for freeing a psychopathic murderer. The look on Sonny's face when Hackman gives him the cross at the prison gates, is gut wrenching. And DJ played that scene beautifully. So, I guess I consider this a 4 Flamingo, but maybe you saw flaws I missed. Anyway, I enjoy your excellent reviews and learn a lot, so moving right along, I look forward to the next one.

@@germantru3f4n Spoiler? How is this a spoiler? I'm sorry if my review revealed something other fans didn't know. It's hard to imagine fans didn't see this already, but if that's the case, I apologize.

@@mjma4797 Your review is right on point. When Crockett realized that for the first time he was responsible of helping to release a murderer it really hit him very hard.

I have to agree with TrigFX. There is a lot to like here. I even love how it reminds audiences that Crockett was a hotshot in robbery before joining Vice. While Hackman's plan is highly implausible (as you pointed out), there are lots of interesting twists and turns to the story and the characters are pretty well fleshed out given that no one (except for Hackman and the DA) get much screen-time. It's impossible to guess how it will all turn out and the final scene where we learn that Crockett's been played is mesmerizing. I judge an episode of Vice by gauging how a non-fan might react to seeing it for the first time. I think this is a 4 Flamingo Episode.

I definitely agree with you. 4 Flamingos

I’ll never forget Crockett’s expression when Hackman walks out of prison with attitude and Crockett slowly realizes that he’s been played. Such brilliant acting by Don Johnson. Crockett wanted to feel like he had done good in this world by now saving Hakimian’s life. It was as though Crockett was looking for redemption. It seemed like having believed he’d sent an innocent man to death row was also making him wonder how many other innocent people he may have sent away through the years. Thus, the reason for his intensity when renewing the investigation (i.e., the police brutality) in attempts to find exculpatory evidence. It seemed an effort to clear his own conscience for not only this conviction but any others that he may have gotten wrong since he’s now questioning his past intuition. It was intense acting by Don Johnson, and one of the best episodes of the series in my view.

This is one of the few Vice episodes that has remained firmly lodged in my head since I first saw it, about 30 years ago. Something to do with the sombre mood and the great music, plus of course the nice twist ending. A very good review, thanks. Subscribed :)

Only 3 flamingos...??! Nooo....!! Say it ain't so! Back in the day, this was one of my most watched episodes - along with Shadow in the Dark, Payback, Killshot and The Good Collar...!! I still recall that chill I got when Crocket finds out he's been duped...! Still, in retrospect, the reasons you give make sense, but surely one extra flamingo for the music choices in this episode...?

Yeah, this is one that I think I might've gone a little low with my rating. It's never been on my all-time-favorites list, but it's got some great performances, and I agree, "We Do What We're Told" alone should give it an extra flamingo.

One of several MV episodes that had true cinematic quality, especially with the writing and direction.

Great review. First time I saw this I was floored at that final scene, perfectly paired with Peter Gabriel's music.

I think this episode was recycled on 2002’s Robbery Homicide Division episode, “Had”. Writer Gustave Reininger credited with both episodes.

Didn't buy his complete innocence, but not gonna lie, Hackman didn't look too sure of himself in those last-hours prison scenes. Nervous, watery-eyed, pensive. Great acting and directing gave the twist at the end even more impact.

One IMDB.com user wrote that he quit watching MV due to the police brutality in this episode. I prefer Season 3 to Season 2, if not Season 1.

Three is a more than fair rating. This doesn’t even feel like a Vice episode .

I remember when this episode first came out, I was not impressed - I thought too much talking. But now that I understand the tie-in to this episode and Crockett's eventual downfall later after Hackman kills his wife, I appreciate the episode a bit more.

I don't think 3 Flamingos are an unfair rating, but you're not really giving us your reasons for withholding the fourth.

I didn't get the feeling that this episode condoned Crockett's actions against Barkley based on the fact that Crockett made a point to be alone with him. As far as we know Tubbs and Castillo never knew what Crockett did. It was clearly illegal but I don't think the show made it seem okay. I think it was a milestone on Crockett's road to depravity; nothing more, nothing less.
