Jan Hammer's music was the third leading role in this show. His music always made the scenes much more intense, like a menacing character in the show. It would not have been the series it's known as today.

"Don't need a gun" by Billy Idol. It was absolutely insane how Michael Mann paired the songs so perfectly with the scenes in terms of tempo and feel. This is the perfect example....WOW!!! Miami Vice was the greatest TV show of all time! This show was so addicting back in the day. I was so pissed if I didn't program the VCR properly and didn't input the day or time right by mistake.

MV was so leading edge in TV on so many levels. Things we take for granted today. The show actually revitalized the now famous South Beach road. Used to be dead. Just a dive with some old people sitting outside their buildings on benches. Now it's THE place to be in Miami. Or one of the major places. MV did this. Started fashion trends. First to pair rock/pop music to their action scenes. Made the Testarossa famous...which funny enough wasn't the best Ferrari..lots of problems. Not the best handling either. Always guest starred celebs, rock stars...etc.I think they had ...famous middleweight boxer Roberto Duran in one episode. :) Today, at least we still have some good writing from Dick Wolf productions. But no shows doing any "1st's". Some reboots too...and not doing a great job (e.g. Magnum PI--this show has taken the most "holidays' during the seasons than any other...has been "off" for about 3 weeks now...looks to be in trouble...doesn't compare to the original by any stretch).

What's always amazed me is that although they had a De Tomaso based Testarossa stunt car for the serious stuff the "handbrake turn" at 3:55 uses the actual Testarossa. That is brave. I know the budget was high but that had to be a first?

The Pantera is sprinkled in the last scenes. The wheels are a different style, offset and are polished. If memory serves,it was always used in either low light or far away scenes. There is a vintage edition of Popular Mechanics magazine that covers the Pantera build. It has Crockett and both fake Ferraris on the cover. Interesting read for stunt car fans.

This show made me buy a Testarossa, beautiful car, but Ferrari wouldn't sell me a white one here in the UK. It had to be Red, Yellow, Blue or Grey. I went for Red which I still have, but I was gutted! And whenever I watch MV, in the back of my mind, there is still that regret.

Definitely the stunt car when he pulls up on the burning car - see the rear bumper? It's all black, not part white. No new Ferrari near that camp fire having flaming items accidentally get on it.....probably Johnson's stunt man as well walking towards the fire. 1st gear on the Testarossa was where 2nd is on conventional american 5 speeds. It might have been more likely that Don Johnson out of habit went into reverse thinking he was shifting into 1st and then dropped down into the true first gear which is where 2nd is on normal cars, this seeing the reverse light come on.

No engine? Black wheels? Anyway, I believe 3 cars were used to represent the Testarossa on the show. Two of them were real Testarossas. One of them had either a black rear bumper, or no rear bumper. The third car was a 1972 De Tomaso Pantera, and used in a few of the 'stunt' scenes. The 1st real car (with white rear bumper) can be seen here at 3:55. It appears also at 8:35, until it reverts to the angular Pantera at 9:02. Another real Testarossa (with the black rear bumper) returns at 9:46.

"Vice" reps kept dogging any kind of hot car in So.Fla. to be "used" in the show....$1200/wk, 2-week minimum, BUT you had to sign a waiver....they weren't responsible for any damage, from what I was told. I was approached twice about my custom '82 Corvette, but I said "no" both times. And then I would see scenes like these, and be REAL glad !:P (these 2 cars couldn't have been real nice; They usually respected the conditions of the "hired" cars). Peace :-)
