1986 Testarossa. The only year it ever came standard from the factory. The concept behind it was to view everything behind the car as it was raised higher on the A-pillar. On a side note, a few people have mounted dual flying mirrors on their Testarossa and have stated they have a "rare" Ferrari with dual mirrors. Ferrari never released a Testarossa from the factory with dual mirrors, the '86 Testarossa is the one and only year with a single mirror.
@jordanschooley7836 Жыл бұрын
It never came with two mirrors because the driver wouldn’t have been able to see anything out of it - it would have been blocked by the a-pillar. Customers just asked dealer to stick one on to make it look symmetrical. I think dealers just flipped the drivers side mirror upside down. Ah, the eighties.

Indeed. While the second generation Dodge Diplomat (1) is "reasonably well powered" (160hp out of a 5.2 liter V8 engine (2), top speed 70km/h or 105mph), it still hass a live axle (rigid rear axle). Now, in the video we see the Testarossa fishtail ("torque steering") at least twice, and the Dodge Diplomat still keeps up without any issues. In real life I'd say that the Testarossa driver can't cope with the torque/power, but since this is a TV series, it could have been that the driver did that vey controlled and very deliberately. To give the viewer the perception of power and speed and going to the limit. Yet, with the Dodge Diplomat keeping up effortlessly (3), this is ruined. (1) Not to be mistaken with the Opel Diplomat, produced some 15 years or so earlier, which already had individual wheel suspension. (2) Yes, to a German, this is also ridiculous. A contemporary Porsche 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine would produce the same power - naturally aspirated. There were also turbo-charged versions available which delivered more than 200hp...but they also had a version, equipped with a pretty mediocre (IMHO) charger which delivered more than 400hp. A Porsche 944 with that 400hp+ would have given the Testarossa quite a bit of trouble - especially since the Testarossa was like 400-500kg heavier. -- But that wouldn't work for the USA, where everyone believes that only a V8 can deliver power (4) (7). (3) It could have been that the Dodge Diplomat (1) had been modified for that segment. A similar thing had had been done in the movie "Bullit" (6). Still, one car crashed during a take (5) - there's only so much you can do with a car which was developed without any cornering ability in mind. (4) Admittedly, some of these US cars have extremely impressive fuel pumps. (5) No, Steve McQueen didn't do the car stunt driving himself - he's only behind the wheel in scenes which show his face in the rear view mirror. (6) Yes, the cars lose more hubcaps than they have. Makes this famous "Bullit" car chase kind of ridiculous as well. (7) Actually, I vaguely remember that some US car company (Callaway?) tried to produce a turbo-charged version as well, but they didn't succeed, until the enlarged the cylinder volume (but not the displacement!), lowering the compression ration from 9.5:1 to 8:1 (8). (8) I think I'm getting a bit off-topic here...need to stop writing before I mention that independent wheel suspension had already been invented in 1894.
