I am fortunate enough that my wife was excellent at piloting the boat at slow speeds. She’d nose into the dock, I’d jump off without tying up. She’d loiter somewhere out of the way with the engine running. I’d grab the tow rig and trailer. She’d start toward the trailer as I was backing up. On a good day, the boat was hitting the trailer bunks 5 seconds after the trailer came to a stop. I’d hook the winch strap to the bow eye and tighten it up. She’d kill the engine and I’d pull the boat and trailer to the tie-down spot with her still on the boat. She’d already have the skis, tow ropes and PFDs stowed. We’d put the transom straps on and would be on the road in minutes. It was a beautiful thing.

Exactly the way to do it my man! I've been on boats my whole life. Whenever my father and I went fishing (every week), this is exactly how we would do it too. No sense in trying to tie the boat off if you have more than one person. I really don't understand why all these people feel it so necessary to tie the boat off.

The Yan Pablo was not having mecanical issue, he just kept putting it in gear before turning the wheel the way he wanted to go. Watch it again. He wants to turn to port, but he keeps putting it in forward while the engine is pointed to starbard, then cranking on the wheel. By the time he gets the engine over center, he has already turned the boat the wrong way. He did gear first over and over.

In Washington, you have to be certified to operate a boat. I can tell you from personal experience that it doesn’t make a bit of difference. Go to the ramps and there are still idiots who don’t know how to dock, trailer or launch a boat. All it did was provide money for the state and the private companies that run the certification programs. And the various police departments that sit on the lakes issuing bogus tickets to raise even more revenue. Just one more money grab.

Handling a car is much different than a boat. Novice boaters are gonna make mistakes. I remember when I first got my boat. I made some stupid mistakes the first couple times I docked my boat. But hey - we all started as newbs. When I bought my first boat in 1982 I hired a captain at the marina and we did nothing but dock at various locations for a half day. It still took my a long time to get comfortable with it.

I can solo dock a 48' sailing catamaran at 3am in near total darkness and 25kts without a hitch... I'm NEVER comfortable with it, I'm always a bit on edge... It's the minute you get "comfortable" with it that you stop paying attention to what's going on and run into things. Please, don't get too comfortable with what you're doing, because there's always that one idiot out there that will get in your way and ruin your day, or a rope that will fall off the deck and foul your prop.

It's simply amazing that these "captains" are entirely clueless about how to pilot their boats. It seems like they're not watching where they're going (looking FORWARD while backing up), and they don't know what the boat is going to do when they move the controls. God help us all if they drive like this too! Does salt water cause a loss of mental cognition?

In Oregon you can't drive a boat unless you take a course online and get a boating license I think that's something they need to do in Florida. We all know they can afford it, more money than brains all these expensive boats with no one knowing how to drive them.

I can tell you, as a resident of Florida, even if courses were required along with a boating license, people here still would not go through that. Even on the streets, you can tell by the way most drive, they don't have driver's licenses even though it's legally required.

If there was a Federal Law saying NOBODY with an IQ below 20 could operate a boat......the Boat ramps in Florida would be empty!

He seems to be listing, I can't say that he is that big to make it list that much. And the girl is going to get sunburn with all the time. It's taking him to pull up the dock.
