I just bought a super clean '91 miata and it randomly started overheating in traffic. Popped the hood and this switch had actually snapped in half on its own. Thanks for the vid!!

You nailed it - thanks a heap. the top of our switch was so corroded through that it broke off when I tried to unplug the wire connector.

Mine too haha had to use electrical tape to get to autozone for a new one and used a piece of paper clip for the lead that goes down inside it, actually worked normally

aw man, this probably happened to my old miata. the radiator would end up bone dry a few days after a refill. also, thanks for the wheels you sold me last winter. i sold the tires because they were going to be too big but they're on my prius right now. thanks again!

I've got a similar issue accompanied by overheating ONLY when I got past 3500 rpm/sit at 4000 (going 80mph+) for about 5 minutes in hot weather. Takes about 10-15 minutes in colder weather. Temps settle at about 1:30-2 on the dash.

People will be crying in the future when they have to dig the whole top of the engine out to get to one little sensor. They will look back at engines like this as when people knew what they were doing 😂

Oh my, it's so clean and pretty.. I have the same '91 B R G, not nearly as clean. The engine bay is markedly different though. in the back left where you seem to have an (extra large?) wiper fluid reservoir I have a block that I'm trying to identify. It may be associated with the ABS system, squarish, three metal tube lines disapppearing downwards into the engine

That is your ABS pump.

I've been having trouble with the traffic overheating as well. It started about a month ago, when it was running about 95 deg centigrade on hwy. I drained, flushed it, replaced the thermostat, refilled it with 70/30 water/coolant. Started it up, watched temperature climb to 97, then turned it off. Removed T-Stat again to make sure I had positioned the jiggle valve at the very top. I had (thought maybe an air bubble had prevented the T-stat from correctly reading the coolant temp). Replaced the lost coolant, started it again, cap off, waiting for coolant to make it through entire system. Seemed fine, engine temp cycled between 88 and 91. I thought the problem was solved, but now, every time I drive it, it goes to about 95 before dropping to 88. Then, for a few miles, it's fine. 88 to 90. Until I encounter traffic. Starts to climb 95-97. Or more. The fan came on about 97 while I was pulled over checking under the hood, but maybe it doesn't always come on. I can't tell when I'm driving. Rad and hoses seem in good shape. Not losing any coolant. Water pump changed about 50k ago. New rad cap two days ago. Could it be the temp sender? It's not where the NA sensor is, so I'll have to do some research. Other suggestions? I'm stumped.

@MiataMan Жыл бұрын
Have you changed the thermostat yet?
@robertthomas5578
@robertthomas5578 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Changed the T-stat. But yes, it feels like it's a Thermostat that's having trouble waking up. I've thought of changing it, in case I got a lemon. Once it opens for the first time, though, it reacts well. Seems to open at 90c, closes at 88c, sometimes lower. Here's what I'm thinking, though. The temperature sending unit on the NB is at the rear of the engine, is it not? Is there a delay happening that causes a temperature differential from sender to Thermostat? An intermittent blockage perhaps?

Im having such a hard time find a replacement in maryland. I took my wire and ran it straight to the frame (ground) so the fan would stay on all the time. I need to fix this badly! where can I get the thermoswitch and connector plug
@MiataMan
@MiataMan 10 ай бұрын
The switch is the easy part. Your local parts shop can get it for you or you can order it on line from Rock Auto. Part number: Beck Arnley 201-1621 or Standard Motor Products # TS244T. Not sure about the plug though. You may need to just graft a female spade connector on.

On Toyotas you have to unplug the thermo switch to turn the fans on (more suitable for "field" repair) instead of grounding the wire.

Is your coolant low? I'm not sre if you drained it before the video but if coolant was in there it would gush out. the sensor only works when coolant touches not air
@MiataMan

Coolant is at the correct level. However, the car had been sitting for a few days and the cooling system was not pressurized.

I have a Mazda eunos 1990 1.6 that has a loose wire black/blue in the fuel injector wire loom along with 2wires that go to the engine coolant sensor at the back of the engine block under the timing unit. I wonder if you could help me identify where the wire should be connected to. Your videos are a godsend and very informative.
@MiataMan
@MiataMan Жыл бұрын
Does the wire have a connector on it? Could it be for the sensor that goes to the temperature gauge?
@andrewduncan-c9y
@andrewduncan-c9y Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The wire did not have a connector and was not long enough to reach to the sensor on the rear of the engine block. I had to crimp one on and manipulate my hand to get it to connect to the hidden sensor. It was very difficult to see but I managed to achieve a connection. I now get a reading on my engine temperature dial. 👏@@MiataMan

@MiataMan
@MiataMan 5 ай бұрын
If the connector is broken, you can snip it off and crimp a female spade connector to the wire. Put some dielectric grease on it to ward off corrosion.
