Miata Rain Gutter replacement

The rain gutter in Mazda MX-5 is broken and has to be changed. The broken rain gutter in the Miata will be replaced by a new one. When you put in a new rain rail you need to be sure that the soft top is placed in the rail. It is good to tighten the nuts on the sides first, then in the middle. After that you fasten them from the sides towards the middle. So in this video you can see how to install a rain rail in Mazda MX-5 Miata.

The bottom of the top needs to go into the rain gutter first because these two components are supposed to be riveted together. This nice gentleman is taking a slight chance that the studs from the body and metal brackets will keep the top from pulling out of the gutter! Attaching them together first also eliminates the need to torque the rail bolts perfectly as the rail's real job it to only keep the assembly of the top and gutter in place. Hint, do this on a warm day so the bottom of the rigid top and rain gutter are pliable. The job took me 8 hours but I am methodical and take my time. Wonderful side note, aside from a faulty cat sensor a few years ago, this is the only repair I have EVER had to make of my 1999 Miata, which I purchased new. admittedly, it only has 38,000 miles on it but still, 23 years!!?? I love this car!

Thank you. Changing the rain gutter took maybe four hours, but there were some cleaning and painting too. The torque specification was 70-95 inch lbs (found on Internet).

Great video! How did you know your rain gutter was cracked when its all hidden?

The former owner knew about the problem and informed us when we bought the car. The parcel shelf became wet when raining. You could also feel the crack with the hand.

They are originally riveted to the soft top. On our car somebody has drilled out the rivets and put screws instead.
