Ash, for me, the biggest takeaways from this: 1. Serve is key. Warm up, and make sure you're ready to really go for it. You have to be able to really go for it. The whole body needs to be in good shape. Your video is an example of how a slight under preparation in physical conditioning can manifest in suboptimal performance 2. Footwork on the groundies. I cant stress that enough. And again, the same comment applies here. You have to be in good shape physically, because if you're not, your footwork suffers, and that means you're not in the right position to hit the shot. 3. Strategy / tactical. The explanation of which shot to hit (shot selection) based on where the return comes, was very helpful. In missing the down the line forehand, and then in making the crosscourt, it shows the difference in just a handful of points, which is what could make the difference in a match.

Thanks for your great comments, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, the physical is just as important (if not more) than the technical. Fortunately for me, I’ve played enough matches in the past to get me through that match with the tactical and the mental side of my game!

Excellent content, thank you. Enjoy the training style video. I have a Slinger Bag too and while not the same as playing someone I find the continuity you get in strokeplay super helpful. Best of luck with the match.👍🏻

Agreed, would love to see any match videos, and especially your self analysis as a coach and how that feeds back into your process! I'm working through that myself as an amateur and it'd be very instructive.

Can you share us the set up for the slinger you were using? I am struggling sometimes to get the best balls. putting the slinger on your own site gives you less topspin as well.

Really good, thanks Ash, I’ll get my slinger bag out tomorrow (it’s going to be cold). You have given me some inspiration but also some ideas for the session. Thank you. Love the slinger bag, but you have to keep it on low speed because things become weird at higher speed.

Great content, very cool sharing! 1 thing about backhand preparation: it was more obvious when you switched to more intense backhands that you delay your unit turn and so you start moving to the ball with side steps.... I hope you noticed it and try better next time!
@TheTennisMentor

Thanks, good spot! The down side to using a ball machine this close to you is you don’t have the same amount of time you would if you were receiving a ball from the other end of the court… I think I was cheating and starting to move even before the ball was launched and then only preparing my unit turn once I saw the ball… not great!

Hi Ashley, thanks for showing this. What are your thoughts on the following footwork patterns: (a) small steps and shuffle and then one to two bigger steps to meet the ball (which you did) or (b) 3-4 medium steps to the ball? I find that the former keeps me more focused and intense while the latter seems more efficient but can lead to lack of focus.
@TheTennisMentor
@TheTennisMentor Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s differs on surfaces, you could probably see that I was on artificial clay so sometimes those shuffles steps can help to find grip. On a hard court you can move more confidently. Generally big steps are best (if you’re accurate with them) as you can cover distances quicker

Cmon! Film the entire session: Pre match meal, mental warm up, stretching, match warm up, match , recovery, post match evaluation, game plan. As a rec player I want to see how a coach approaches a match. The results are less consequential than the effort and discipline.
