The weight of the diaphragm and attached components directly affects the transient response of the microphone. If you have a microphone dedicated to modeling like the ones from Slate, I could see how to emulate the transient response, but I don't think that's something that can be adjusted for so simply as to turn any random mic into any other mic

sm-58 is so ubiquitous that using it as the basis for a linear transformation would suffice.

I love the idea of mic modeling. The Slate ML-1 is my main vocal mic. I have IK Multimedia's Mic Room but they never really updated their model list after the initial release so they're missing out on so many popular home studio source mics. Super cool that both Mic Mod and Lava have the AT2020 as a source, because everyone who's ever tried home recording has one of those lying around! It's exciting to see that Lava has a mic request form on their site, in addition to having a bunch of home studio mics as sources. I've requested the Rode Podmic as source, because that's become a new home studio staple.

"Sound of the strings" Yes! That's what I've been hearing! Super odd but that's a great way to describe it.

great video as always!! Acustica LAVA only models saturation on 4x. oversampling seemingly, i wonder how much that would have impacted the sound

I was going to mention something similar bc the first example w/lava had 4x and then the next didn't have the oversampling. I think that Lava is my favorite, but I still don't use it often. I like that it has both the proximity, oversampling, and dry / wet knob and a large selection of mics.

In those final examples you are channeling Nina Simone! Interesting video as always. Thanks.

Mississippi good goddam D'BLACK HAWK loves any songs about birds! I don't think any of the emulations will work like they sort of rep they do. But if you just think of it like a tone box, they definitely can give you the ability to get more varied tones from the mics you do have and keeps you using the compression strictly for dynamics if you can dial in the sound of the recording mostly using the mic emulator. Antelope Audio has some nice ones too, but it doesn't give you all the options to adjust stuff that the Antares and Acustica ones do. If you want to make a mic emulator and your company doesn't start with 'A', you're going to have an uphill battle, apparently!

Antelope is alittle mid. Antares mic modeler with some of their tube plug-in can get beginners a better tone for sure. I’m not using it as much now but I primarily record vocals and bass. Mostly dropping to give personal experience for your watchers to see too.

I just got a zen q synergy core. I was considering buying the edge note small condesor mic, but I can't find any video reviews that do a good job at showing you the actual differences in the mic models on (as colse as possible to) the exact same sound source. One the edge note in particular. How familiar with antelopes mic modeling are you? you think it's even worth it to spend $150 on it? Or can I get similar results with eq? What about one of the large condensors like the solo? Are those worth it? Any advice is appreciated 🙏

@@EricJohnson-fh8zj I wound up buying the solo edge and I needed to buy an ilok for it too. I’ve had a Neumann Tlm 103 and used mic modeling on my nt1 and a solo edge. All in all I wound up getting a dynamic that I found matched my voice the most. Paired the dynamic with a tnt dm2 which offers clean gain and impedence options before it hits the interface lets you kind of further change the tonality to match your voice all raw before it gets any processing. I tried a Cloudlifter previously and was not impressed at all and some reason this one just hits. I sold all my other mics and I’m happiest I’ve been with my mics. You can get anywhere with mixing but idk I just wasn’t super impressed with them. I use an audient id22 (they go for killer deals now like $200) the sound is wide open and clean I used a lot of pres even a wa73 and I prefer keeping it simple but to each their own

I want to be nice, I REALLY do, but this is not an analysis nor a comparison of hardly anything at all. It’s more like showing us some sound and claiming it sounds like some other device but offering nothing from that other device to demonstrate the validity of the claim. To test the claims of a mic modeler is simple. You put two different mics on the SAME sound source in the SAME place, and then you switch back and forth WITHOUT playing any distracting different sound in between. This includes talking. Simple. I have watched other videos on this channel in the past and found them to be perfectly good analysis of audio software, so it pains me to say this one is really a big disappointment. This comes off almost more like a paid promotion of a product because it’s clearly not functioning as an analysis of the claims of the device being tested. 🤷‍♂️
