I Finally Bought A Victorian Mansion!!!

Hey there! Just want to clarify a couple FAQs/things that have made a few people uncomfortable: 1. I have to keep the old house and turn it into a source of income because as a KZbinr, my financial future is unpredictable. YT doesn't offer retirement packages lol. I know the idea of one person owning 2 properties is very off-putting for many, but ultimately I have to what is best for my future and diversifying via real estate is the safest choice. Eventually, after airbnb-ing the old house has helped pay off the big house/fund repairs (because the top half of this is a fixer upper), old house will be a rental. 2: I will likely not be renewing my NYC lease, and if this house had come up 2 weeks earlier, I probably wouldn't have signed it in the first place 😅 3. There is NOTHING wrong with mortgages! I was referencing the fact that I used to be terrified of them, and apologizing for the "plot hole" in my character. But I'm so sorry for how that must've come off, because mortgages are a necessary and usually wise option most cases! haha didn't mean to sound so snobby and cringey at that part 😳 4. to those speculating about the price- you're not even close haha. It was wayyyy cheaper.

Aside from certain restrictions, someone can still remodel the home, however severe alterations run the risk of having the house being removed from the Historic Register. And there are some fools who would not care! I would love to live in a home listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

i think micarah will never not turn a look for 3 reasons: 1) the most obvious, she is conventionally attractive, particularly tall and skinny, so we're all conditioned to think that clothes look good on skinny attractive people (not a dig, just an observation. consider the "'is it fashion or is she just skinny" discussion) 2) she has IMPECCABLE knowledge of pop culture and fashion references, so while she may have a natural eye for fashion, having an ever expanding mental book of references is always going to improve and shape her decisions. im not convinced that she doesnt kindof have like a cybernetic eye that scans clothing and processes data like a supercomputer. 3) she has a high level of confidence, little shame in being perceived as a fool, and an exceptionally charming personality. Those things are all going to make you think someone is fashionable, even if your decisions are questionable. I say this as someone who makes VERY questionable fashion decisions all the time. If you walk into a room and announce that your outfit looks great and you love it, before anyone has a chance to assess if they like your outfit or not, theyre much more convinced due to your assertion and conviction that you do indeed look great lol. and honestly i feel like these things are all very Barbie of her LOL TL;DR: Micarah is very iconic.

I know you will probably never see this comment because you have a thousand others to read, BUT you mentioned the house is on the National Register. If you go to your state historical preservation agency (in my state thats the Historical Commission, but in Ohio it might be different) you can contact them to get a copy of the NR application, which will *usually* have a ton of history about the house. It might be listed Individually or as part of a District, and if its a District youll get less about your specific house, maybe only a couple sentences, but if its listed Individually you might get several pages of history!! In my state the NR applications are all online, but that varies state to state. When you talk to them, ask what stipulations come with NR designation (and any other state and local designations it posseses) - you may have to go through state or local review processes for exterior work, for example.

I too bought the victorian mansion of my dreams this year and, incredibly, had a similar amazing coincidence with the tiles around my fireplace!! This may be different in Ohio, but in my state you have to get permission for external changes--anything that impacts the appearance of the house from the outside, but not the inside. I think the principle is that you should only make changes that could be reversed back to the original structure. On the other hand, there are also property tax breaks and grants available for upkeep.

looking it up since i don’t live in ohio, i found a site that says ohio law “protects historic sites from destruction or insensitive remodeling”, so i believe that would mean ohio’s laws are stricter about keeping much of the interior character similar as well! some states are only about the structure/outside look itself, and many people get away with gutting the old character homes with the fact that they aren’t plaqued. other than changing defining characteristics, i think she’s safe to do whatever!

You are absolutely correct about cost of living in small town Ohio. I recently moved to a small town in North East Ohio from a significantly larger and more expensive city. I bought a glorious 1945 Colonial Revival Home outright, in Cash. I am also a young, unmarried woman and to live mortgage free in a peaceful, safe, quiet place, whilst afflicted with a health condition that renders it difficult for me to work consistently, as I am legally disabled, has been the blessing of a Lifetime. 🖤

Glad you choose to keep the wallpaper. People think it all needs to come off and they have to repaint which is a dusty process with a boring result. Good call on not trying to sand and refinish the floors. That is another dusty process without much payout. People like the look of an older floor vs gleaming laminate. They cleaned up nicely. Heating and cooling it will be the challenge. I know there was a “gas boom” economy when and where the house was built.

I think I can pretty well understand the excitement about chandeliers and chairs❤ This year I finally had my bathroom renovated, and even after 1 month I can't stop randomly walking to the bathroom to once again touch the tiles, door knob, faucet, have the 100th look at the brand new bathtub and every time I have this thought spinning in my mind: "This is all mine, I bought it, I bought it to myself" :D

I love that the outfits are kind of matching the vibes of the rooms. I don't know much about fashion history, but if you don't have them designated for something, a walk through time would be so cool. You could have your actual Victorian rooms, but then add details from the 1920s + throughout the different rooms. You could walk us through how to make vintage pieces from junk as you furnish the cool nooks and crannies. Also, I'm in LOVE with your sewing studio! Congratulations!

I could be wrong but I seem to remember reading something years ago about the owners of historically registered homes needing to jump through all sorts of hoops during renovation to preserve the historical significance of the home... It's been a long time since I read it and I don't remember all the details, and it could be something that pertains to one home and not another, or maybe is only applied in one state and not another... but it'd definitely be something to look into and be aware of when starting renovations on your new home. As soon as I saw that plaque the memory jiggled and I thought, "uh-oh... wait..."

I like that you’re making choices and being flexible as you grow in choosing to take out a mortgage. It’s something you never thought you’d do, but it’s brave and if you want to I have full faith you can keep making an ever increasing amount of money of your content creation because the only thing currently limiting that growth is probably reasonable and healthy boundaries on how much of your life you’re willing to dedicate to social media.
